When the body of 3-year-old Saville Kent was found with his throat cut at his home in Wiltshire, local magistrates appealed for a detective from London to solve the case. In 1860, Inspector Jonathan Whicher was Scotland Yard’s star detective, making him the natural choice for the job. But by the time he arrived on the scene, much of the evidence had either been removed or destroyed. And Wiltshire police had already arrested a suspect.
