Short Story 3 – Masters of the Universe
When you think about the 1980s, do people and things like MTV, Madonna, Prince and Members Only jackets come to mind? While these were all staples of the decade, they aren’t what host Deirdre Pippins is most enamored by. Instead, she is most drawn to 1980s literature, particularly novels by Tom Wolfe, who has been lauded as a literary legend of the 20th century. Tune into this week’s episode of Bookaholic to learn more about Deirdre’s favorite Tom Wolfe novel Bonfire of the Vanities and its relevance to current day life in the US. And if you are interested in checking out the novel for yourself, you can purchase it on the True Bookaholic Bookstore, linked below. Happy reading! Quotes “Max Headroom, Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Members Only jackets, and MTV – these are just a few of the people and things you think of when someone mentions the 1980s. But if you do a little recirc at the library, you will find the author Tom Wolfe on the shelves.” (0:15-0:37) “Masters of the Universe was used to describe ambitious white men, who were Wall Street traders racking up millions of dollars a year in salary and bonuses.” (1:16-1:27) “With all that’s happened in the last year with racism, class and politics, The Bonfire of the Vanities promises to be a prequel to life now.” (1:57-2:05) Connect with Me Podcast: Bookaholic Email: readingjunkie@book-a-holic.com Instagram: @truebookaholic Goodreads: True Bookaholic Facebook: @bookaholicpodcast Twitter: @truebookaholic1 LinkedIn: Deirdre Pippins True Bookaholic Bookstore The Bonfire of the Vanities

Summer Beach Reads - Episode 4
The official start of summer is right around the corner, and you know that that means...time to finalize your 2021 summer reading list! If you’re not sure where to start, Deirdre Pippins has created a list of six engaging and dynamic beach reads that you can add to your summer roster. Here’s a sneak peek into the six novels Deirdre has selected! 1. A Low Country Bride by Preslaysa Williams (2:35-6:43): While romance may be Deirdre’s least favorite genre, this novel introduces several topics that she hopes will bring readers more maturity and depth than your typical love story. 2. While Justice Sleeps by Stacey Abrams (6:44-10:15): This legal thriller written by celebrated national leader and bestselling author Stacey Abrams is fast-paced and full of twists and turns. You won’t want to miss it! 3. The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris (10:16-14:58): This novel is Deirdre’s number one pick for this summer’s list of reads. From racist behavior in the workplace to coping with microaggressions to the exhaustion of being black in predominantly white spaces, this dynamic book will keep you on the edge of your seat. 4. How to Kidnap the Rich by Rahul Raina (15:08-18:18): A crime story, love story and social satire all rolled into one, this novel explores the glaring inequalities that still persist in modern-day Delhi. 5. Island Queen by Vanessa Riley (18:19-20:57): This historical fiction novel (Deirdre’s favorite genre!) is based on the true life story of Dorothy Kirwan Thomas, a black woman in the colonial West Indies who broke free of slavery to become a powerful and wealthy landowner. 6. Summer on the Bluffs by Sunny Hostin (20:58-27:04): Written by Sunny Hostin, co-host of The View, this novel details a life-changing summer on Oak Bluffs, the most exclusive black beach community in the country where Michelle and Barack Obama recently purchased a home. Tune into this week’s episode of Bookaholic to learn more about the books on host Deidre Pippins’s Summer Beach Reads list. Happy reading! Quotes • “Summer reading has always been a thing, and I guess it’s because people are supposed to be a little more relaxed and laid back during the summer….and then maybe you have an opportunity to read a book! It’s usually your lighter, more fast-paced books that you read during the summer.” (1:06-1:39) • “Romance is my least favorite genre. But surprise, surprise, surprise, I have a romance book that is on my list!” (2:44-2:57) • “What happens between people of color intraracially, we need to tell the truth about that also….For an example there was the light skin versus dark skin aspect. That’s an intraracial thing.” (14:04-14:31) https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/32252751-deirdre Connect with Me https://www.book-a-holic.com/ readingjunkie@book-a-holic.com https://www.instagram.com/truebookaholic/ https://www.facebook.com/bookaholicpodcast https://twitter.com/truebookaholic1 https://www.linkedin.com/in/deirdre-pippins-38338a214/ Podcast production and show notes provided by FIRESIDE Marketing

Take a listen! We hope you’ll enjoy it. Quotes • “I love the decade of the 1960s. It was from that inspiration that I decided to create this playlist.” (0:26-0:35) • “Now the 1960s when you look back over it, the first part of the decade was still your evolutionary, motown sound, the love songs, the break up songs, that type of thing. Then, when you got to the second half of the 1960s, the songs became more revolutionary, more fight the power, the more freedom type of anthem songs. So, I have a little bit of both on this playlist.” (1:19-1:55) Links https://open.spotify.com/playlist/75RsN0w4FMKeLkUoaRa69m?si=4e7ecbdd8f2940cd&nd=1 https://www.book-a-holic.com/post/2021-reading-challenge Connect with Me https://www.book-a-holic.com/ readingjunkie@book-a-holic.com https://www.instagram.com/truebookaholic/ https://www.facebook.com/bookaholicpodcast https://twitter.com/truebookaholic1

Short Story 1 – Tsundoku
Overview As you might guess, host Deirdre Pippins has always been a big fan of Jeopardy. Her voracious appetite for reading has given her a leg-up on the competition when it comes to trivia! She was also always a big fan of Alex Trebek, so she was especially saddened to learn he had been diagnosed with cancer and ultimately passed away. She made it a point to tune into his last episode on January 8, 2021 and was pleasantly surprised to learn about a new word from one of the contestants. The man admitted that he suffers from tsundoku, a Japanese word that the contestant defined as, “Having far more books on your bookshelf than you will ever be able to read.” As a self-proclaimed reading junkie herself, Deirdre felt an immediate connection to both Alex Trebek and the contestant that has stuck with her to this day. Tune into this week’s episode of Bookaholics to learn more! Quotes • “Tsundoku is a Japanese word….Wikipedia defines it as, ‘Acquiring reading materials, but letting them pile up in one’s home without reading them.’ It also says, ‘It’s also used to refer to books ready for reading later when they’re on a bookshelf.’” (1:43-2:14) • “That’s how I watched the last show that Alex Trebek hosted of Jeopardy, knowing that he and I shared something in common other than Jeopardy, and that is tsundoku.” (2:55-3:10) Connect with Me • https://www.book-a-holic.com/ • readingjunkie@book-a-holic.com • https://www.instagram.com/truebookaholic/ • https://www.facebook.com/bookaholicpodcast • https://twitter.com/truebookaholic1 • https://www.pinterest.com/TrueBookaholic/
