Episode 09 - More Andy than Ryan

Poor unsuspecting Ryan. He’s already tired because it’s a late recording session and then Andy subjects him to a range of Eurovision songs that are not exactly his bag. Understatement. To be fair things start off well with Ben and Tan singing Yes in emphatic style for Denmark in Eurovision’s lost year and Andy reveals the song’s special heart-warming significance, but then - Wham! - its Andy track after Andy track. First there’s Celtic overload from Ireland’s Dervish whose lead singer Mary performed pretty abysmally on the night back in 2008, then we have Finnish Fredi who wants to Pump Pump, especially with his enthusiastic (and newly christened) friends Sue and Cheryl. There is no respite for Ryan from the next two acts. Blue-tighted, seashell necklace-wearing Vikki who side stepped her way through the song Love Is but failed to ignite the interest of the British record-buying public at the time, despite placing a respectable 4thin the contest. Željko Joksimović’s beautiful Lane Moje is also right up Andy’s strasse with its soaring Serbian instrumentals, but Ryan is still out in the cold. This episode’s Deuce award nomination, Maltese singer Nicole Azzapardi, warms his pop heart a little with Into the Fire, but it’s up to the Randomiser and its 2021 choice - The Roop’s Discotheque - to revive him fully.
