155. Talk to Kids About Sex: 5 Common Mistakes

Dr. Shannon Widlansky was trained as an Ob/Gyn who is now a life coach. She has been a gender expert for 8 years. She helps institutions use more gender-inclusive language. She is a facilitator of the Our Whole Lives curriculum which teaches sexuality to all ages. She talks about what was wrong with past sexuality education. The definition of “man” or “woman” is wrapped up in the function of a body part. Which gets shaken up when there are problems with these organs. You don’t have to talk about the clitoris when your education is only a “disease and pregnancy prevention plan” – Dr. Casperson 5 common mistakes adults make in talking to kids about sexuality 1) Not planning ahead 2) That it is more than sex and puberty a. 5 circles of sexuality i. Body image and appreciation, sensualization ii. Intimacy iii. Identity iv. Repro health – puberty changes, infection v. Sexualization – consent, how media portrays sexuality 3) One and done “the talks” – a lifelong conversation. 4) They have to get it right – don’t expect to get it “right” 5) Inclusive language “most but not all” Consent – ideally an enthusiastic yes, not something that is coerced.
