Ep. 580 Pierpaolo Guerra | Monty Waldin

Ep. 580 Pierpaolo Guerra | Monty Waldin

Episode 580 Monty Waldin Interviews Pierpaolo Guerra Pierpaolo Guerra is the Export Manager at Tenuta di Capezzana. In this interview he shares some of the fantastic history and wines this Winery has to offer. The Family at Tenuta di Capezzana In the twenties, Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi with his wife Vittoria bought the property of Capezzana, then enlarged with the purchase by the Marquis Aman Niccolini, of two neighboring farms, “Il Poggetto” and “Trefiano”. Thus was born the Tenuta di Capezzana, divided into 3 farms and more than 120 farms, dedicated to the production of high quality wine and oil. Alessandro's passion for collecting led him to preserve bottles, so that today Capezzana can boast a collection of historic vintages starting from 1925. In 1945, Augusto Alessandro, son of Alessandro, was joined by his son Ugo, a veteran of the war and a graduate in agriculture, which gradually took over the management of the estate, transforming it from a sharecropping management to a modern company. Ugo, a man of other times but with broad views, he exploited the enthusiasm and passion of his children, leaving each of them to run a business. A perfect combination between Ugo's experience and the novelty of the fourth generation. The first of the children to work alongside their father was Vittorio, who at the age of eighteen took charge of the all-round management of the company, eventually becoming the manager of the campaign and the winemaker, devoting himself particularly to the transformation towards organic. Today Capezzana is managed by a collaboration between the fourth and fifth generation. Beatrice is the sales manager, flanked by her sister Benedetta, the winemaker, and her brother Filippo, who is responsible for the production of oil and the financial part. The fifth generation has already begun to follow the family tradition, and today they work in the company Serena, responsible for hospitality, The History: In Carmignano the vine was already cultivated in the pre-Roman era, about 3000 years ago, as demonstrated by the wine jars and tasting cups found in the Etruscan tombs. A parchment dated 804 was found in the state archive of Florence: it is a rental contract that documents how olive trees and vines were cultivated in Capezzana 1200 years ago for the production of oil and wine. In the early Renaissance, a woman, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi, built the first “casa da Signori” and nine farm houses with the relative vine-growing systems; it was 1475. Other generations and families took turns on the property of the estate: the Cantucci, related to the Medici, and the Bourbon del Monte Marquises. In the eighteenth century a married Cantucci Bourbon enlarged the farm and bought new farms; he also introduced an exemplary administrative method, the documents of which are still preserved today in the company's historical archive. After the Bourbon del Monte, the company passed to the Adimari Morelli and then to the Franchetti Rothschilds and, by the widow Sara de Rothschild, and then to the Contini Bonacossi, our family, in 1920. Ep. 1971 Giulia Stocchetti interviews Lamberto and Lodovico Montresor | The Next Generation

Ep. 1971 Giulia Stocchetti interviews Lamberto and Lodovico Montresor | The Next Generation

Welcome to Episode 1971 in which host Giulia Stocchetti interviews Lamberto and Lodovico Montresor  this week on The Next Generation. Two brothers, fifth generation of Ottella wine producers, working together making different Lugana expressions, enhancing its complexity, versatility and ageability. All of that, in a family-run winery that combines modern art, architecture, sustainability, biodiversity and nature on Lake Garda.   More about today’s guest The Montresor family has been at the helm of Ottella winery for four generations. The company was started by Lodovico, father of Francesco and Michele, a wine entrepreneur and passionate collector of artworks. In the book "The province of Verona and its wines, 1900", the historian Giovan Battista Perez testifies how the Montresor family was, in 1905, the only one to produce Lugana in the Verona area. In 1964 Lodovico Montresor, together with Professor Michele Vescia of the University of Brescia and the engineer Turlini, had the intuition to design and delimit this very precious area called Lugana, giving it its own geographical conformation and its own identity. The result was the birth of the Lugana appellation three years later, in 1967. In the mid-eighties, Ottella acquired new impetus when Francesco, freshly graduated in law, joined his father. Francesco Montresor, President of the Lugana Protection Consortium from 2007 to 2013, was then joined in 1993 by Michele, current president of the Venetian Winemakers Association. In 2013 the project for the new winery began: a unique place, intended to represent the values of the company, the love for the vineyard, the landscape and art. Ottella today is a 90 hectare reality in Lugana. Lodovico and Lamberto work alongside their father and uncle in the company... from father to son: past, present and future. A beautiful Italian story! Ep. 1969 Piemonte Travel Series: Chiara Boschis | On The Road With Stevie Kim

Ep. 1969 Piemonte Travel Series: Chiara Boschis | On The Road With Stevie Kim

Welcome to Episode 1969 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim heads to the the Piedmont region of northern Italy where she meets Chiara Boschis of Azienda Agricola E. Pira e Figli Chiara Boschis Discover the history of the ancient estate where the winery is located, the development of this extraordinary family winery, and the winemaking techniques involved in producing its famous Barolo wines. More about the winery:  The Piras were an ancient family of winemakers, mentioned in parish registers since the 17th century, who also became winemakers between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Gigi Pira, legendary exponent of the old school of production, created his wines by assembling grapes from his own plots of Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He maintained that, just as cows must graze on the best pastures to produce excellent milk, only the best vineyards must be chosen for wine. But Pira's attachment to tradition did not stop there: he was in fact the last remaining winemaker carry out the pressing and production by foot without the support of any technical means. Since 1980, continuity has been guaranteed by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, already linked to the Pira by deep friendship and mutual esteem and representing a historic family of Barolo producers since the 18th century, now in its 9th generation. After graduating, Chiara began to follow her passion for wine and her world full time, becoming one of the first female producers of Barolo at the end of the 1980s. By taking care of this "little big house" she brought a breath of renewal to the cellar and in the production style. Since 2010, Chiara has been joined in the ownership of the company by her brother Giorgio who shares with her the great passion for working in the vineyard and in the cellar, also with thirty years of experience. The work on the vines, strictly manual, is carried out with extreme care and respect for the environment, following the dictates of organic cultivation, for which the company has been certified since the 2014 harvest. Production is very limited (around 40,000 bottles per year), coming from directly produced grapes. Ep. 1965 Dominic Zucchetto | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon

Ep. 1965 Dominic Zucchetto | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon

Welcome to episode 1965 of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Dominic Zucchetto. They discuss the aperitivo culture in Italy and the UK, as well as the distillation processes for spirits like Grappa and Gin, particularly from Beniamino Maschio. As the company's export manager, Dominic also shared his insights into the drinks industry. More about today’s guest: Born in London but raised in Italy in a small village called Quero near Valdobbiadene, I first entered the wine & spirits world during my latter school years through harvesting in order to earn some money. This initial interest in wine making, followed by my appreciation of the finished product, convinced me to unite what I was studying at school (economics) with this new passion, and I decided that I wanted to become a sales agent, and having had the good fortune of being raised in an English speaking family, it had to be for foreign markets. After a 5 year experience in a small winery in Valdobbiadene as the only employee where I was involved in the entire production process, therefore acquring great experience and knowledge, it was time to move on and follow my ambition of becoming a sales agent. For the following 6 years I worked in the export department for a larger company that owned not only 2 wineries but also a distillery, and that is where I also started to get passionate about the unique world of Spirits. Last year I was contacted by the Beniamino Maschio company as they were looking for a new Export Sales Manager and I decided to accept the offer, taking into consideration the career opportunity but also the incredible portoflio that the company offers and that today I am extremely proud to represent.
