Hugh Glass: A Tale of Survival Against All Odds | E84

In this episode, we delve into the incredible story of Hugh Glass, a frontiersman and fur trapper whose will to survive surpassed the limits of human endurance. The narrative unfolds in the early 19th century as Glass embarks on a perilous expedition through the untamed wilderness. The focal point of the episode is the harrowing bear attack that nearly claimed his life.

Glass, facing the sheer brutality of nature, finds himself in the jaws of a ferocious grizzly bear. Severely injured and left for dead by his expedition team, the odds seem insurmountable for Glass. However, what follows is nothing short of miraculous.

Listen as Julie describes Glass's astounding journey as he defies death and embarks on an arduous 200-mile trek back to civilization. With determination as his only companion, he battles the elements, hunger, and the constant threat of hostile Native American tribes.

Hugh Glass left behind legacy and lore, of a riveting journey through the wilderness, a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and an exploration of one man's incredible determination to defy the odds and make his way back from the brink of death to civilization.

Violet Jessop: She lived through three ship wrecks in her lifetime, one of which was the Titanic | E58

Imagine surviving not one, not two, but three shipwrecks. That's what Argentinian-Irish ocean liner stewardess and nurse, Violet Jessop, managed to do in the early 20th century. Jessop was one tough lady who had some serious luck on her side. She survived the sinking of the British warship HMS Hawke in 1911, the ill-fated RMS Titanic in 1912, and even the sister ship of the Titanic, HMHS Britannic, in 1916. It's hard to fathom the fear and uncertainty she must have felt during those experiences, but her resilience and quick thinking are definitely something to be admired. The story of Violet Jessop's incredible survival has captured the imaginations of many, and it's inspiring to think of what we can achieve in the face of adversity. John Colter's Run: John Colter Runs for his Life as Blackfeet Worriers Chase him on Foot | E53

Today I will be telling you the story of John Colter’s run. We are stepping into the past for this one, into the 1800s. John Colter was one of the first “mountain man” as he spent months alone in the wilderness. John was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804-1806. Although he was a part of this memorable expedition, he is also remembered as the first European man to set foot into Yellowstone national park and to see the Tetons. In 1809 while trapping beavers on the Jefferson river, Colter and his friend John Potts were surrounded by several hundred Blackfeet Indians, and Colter was forced to run for his life.
