Slow News Day - August 2021

On this episode comedian Ailish McCarthy joins me to discuss the case made famous by the documentary 'Abducted in Plain Sight' and one of the most egregious cases of manipulation that you can find; the case of Robert Berchtold and Jan Broberg. Infiltrating and then sexually intoxicating a whole family of Mormons called The Brobergs, Berchtold was able to wrestle away the control of their daughter Jan and end up co-habiting with the family as he continued his deep psychological control campaign. Abducting Jan on multiple occasions and ultimately holding her hostage in Mexico until the FBI were involved should have been the end of him and his depraved mission; but the hooks were too deep however as The Brobergs became even more entwined in Berchtolds web of deceit, psychological authority and sexual control. DEEP DIVE On this episode we discuss one of the most enduring and visceral myths in humanities history; dating from ancient civilisations; even mentioned in the bible and other ancient religious texts and recognised all the way up to many modern media masterpieces; the concept of the bloodsucking prince of the night still holds a strong sentiment in all our hearts so this time we are talking about Vampires. From tales of forlorn lovers and rich aristocrats draining yearning wenches of their blood, to monsters exsanguinating all and sundry in remote villages and sleepy town in Eastern Europe the lore of the vampire mythos endures for centuries. It is most well known today by the foppish and romantically charged stories of teenage vampire heartthrobs but the Vampire is a deep rooted image of the dissuasion of common folk to give in to their animalistic urges and as a stark health warning designed to be preserved in the minds of men, protecting from disease and poison of the blood and bloodlines. While Vampires seem wholly unbelievable in their dark magic roots, there are many tales of very real men who would behave as these monsters reputedly do. Serial Killers, Murderers, Madmen and Tyrant Kings, all carry the title of Vampire for their dark deeds and fascination with blood. DEEP DIVE - On this episode we talk about an event that arguably changed America forever; destroyed the perceptions of law enforcement for anyone that witnessed this event on mainstream media; and irredeemably erased at least some of the faith that Americans held dearly when it came to constitutionally held aspects of the US culture like freedom and security; this time we are talking about David Koresh and The Waco Massacre. In 1993 in Waco Texas the ATF and FBI initiated a sting on a Branch Davidian compound which resulted in a fire fight and a 51 day siege which ultimately led to the deaths of the 79 members of the so-called cult and their leader David Koresh. Investigations into the ethics and execution of these government agency order went on all through the 90s at a congressional level, but these agencies never saw justice. Koresh and his followers were killed by the US Government; this was on suspicion of child abuse, drug production and illegal arms sale and stockpiling. TRUE CRIME - On this episode we talk about one of the most tragic and seemingly preventable crimes to rock the UK in the past 30 years; a short lived but unbelievable mystery of a killer who tried to famously help police and, through media interviews, cemented his own undoing; this time we are talking about Ian Huntley.Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman; two young girls from Soham in East Cambridgeshire, England were abducted and murdered by Huntley and he then brazenly went on to try to help to solve the case.
