Bile Acid and Cholesterol: The Missing Link

Bile Acid and Cholesterol: The Missing Link

Bile acids and cholesterol play important roles in your body. Check this out.

In this podcast, we’re going to talk about the relationship between bile acids and cholesterol.

Bile acids are made by your liver and the friendly bacteria in your gut.

75% of your body’s cholesterol is made by your body. This means that only 25% comes from your diet.

Many people freak out over dietary cholesterol. However, your body is your primary source of cholesterol.

Bile acids are the primary pathway for cholesterol catabolism. Catabolism is the breakdown of complex molecules into simple molecules. This allows your body to utilize cholesterol and turn it into things like vitamin D, cellular membranes, hormones, and even bile.

50% of your daily cholesterol turnover (the rate of being depleted and replaced) is controlled by your bile.

Bile salts also regulate your LDL to HDL ratio. In fact, bile can lower your LDL levels and increase your HDL levels.

If you lack bile on a low-carb or ketogenic diet, it may cause increased cholesterol levels.

The benefits of bile salts include:

• Regulating cholesterol

• Breaking down fat-soluble nutrients, including vitamins A, D, E, and K.

• Regulating essential fatty acids

• Promoting liver health

• Supporting healthy vision

• Regulating bruising
