#170 - Setting the Precedent: Fighting for the Decriminalization of Sex Work in Vermont with Misha Montana
I always get excited when I hear of places around the world who are actively fighting the decriminalization of sex work. Here in Canada, we are fighting our own fight to contest one of our archaic bills but of course, without being attached to a political group or politician, the process can take much longer when going at it alone. So when Misha Montana reached out to me to let me know that she was working with local lobbyist, David Mickenberg, on the case, I was thrilled and obviously had to have her on to speak about it! Misha is an adult performer and creator and has been a longtime advocate for decriminalization and the humanization of sex workers. She is also an ambassador and educator on The Porn Conversation, a non-profit organization helping to educate kids and youth about porn literacy. Y'all, it's here! Season 6 has officially landed and I am so excited to kick off this brand new season with this feisty firecracker, Marcela Alonso. Marcela is a digital content creator and the host of the sex worker podcast, Get Schooled. She brings on decades of experience in our industry including many years as an exotic dancer, a dominatrix, cam model and content creator. Marcela started off as a survival sex worker in the mid-90s and speaks to that time where there wasn't much diversity. She shares the prejudices that she personally received and bore witness to discriminatory behaviour from various strip clubs across the USA. Of course, it was a different time back then and although this generation has welcomed more sex workers of colour, Marcela shares that there is still much work to do. We're taking a bit of a turn this week and will be learning more about polyamory. To help us guide this conversation, we speak with film director, producer and actor, Stephanie Sellars. Stephanie produced Lust Life Love, a slight autobiographical film about her experience navigating polyamory in New York City. Although Sellars isn't a current sex worker herself, it was interesting in indicating the overlap that polyamory has with sex work. Polyamory, "multiple loves" originating in Greek mythology, occur in instances where there are multiple relationships, sometimes found in triads or throuples to which can grow to many partners.
