1070: Squatters | Skeptical Sunday

Scared of squatters taking your home? Nick Pell brings perspective to what the media tells us is a "growing crisis" on this week's Skeptical Sunday!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:
  • Squatting occurs when people occupy a property without legal right or permission, often in vacant homes or rental properties. While they may create fake leases or documentation to appear legitimate, they are distinct from legal tenants who have stopped paying rent or are being evicted.
  • Most squatting cases become complex civil matters rather than criminal ones because squatters often create fake leases and establish utility bills in their names, making it difficult for police to immediately remove them.
  • The current housing situation contributes to squatting — average rent has increased 13.7% year over year since 1980, while wages have only grown 0.2% year over year since the early 1970s, making housing increasingly unaffordable for many.
  • Changes to squatting laws need careful consideration, as overly strict laws could potentially be weaponized against legitimate occupants (such as domestic abuse victims) or lead to frivolous claims against legitimate tenants.
  • Property owners can protect themselves by regularly checking on their properties, maintaining good documentation of ownership and occupancy, and quickly establishing a paper trail with authorities if issues arise. Being proactive rather than reactive is the best defense against potential squatting situations.

How did things go so wrong, and what can you do now? This and more here on Feedback Friday. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Is the graduating class of '20 finding it especially difficult to plot a life course when everything's so uncertain right now? (Well, it's not '21 yet!) You were a self-help cult follower, which led to you becoming a registered sex offender. How did things go so wrong, and what can you do now? [Thanks once again to Corbin Payne, Esq. for his help with this one.] Even though you're in a long-term relationship, you've accidentally developed feelings for your very married mentor. What can you do to get over this embarrassingly inappropriate crush? Recommendation of the Week: Spy Wars with Damian Lewis Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? 360: Garry Kasparov | Deep Thinking for Disordered Times

Garry Kasparov (@Kasparov63) is a Russian chess grandmaster, political activist, and author of Deep Thinking: Where Machine Intelligence Ends and Human Creativity Begins and Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped. What We Discuss with Garry Kasparov: The part chess played in promoting Soviet Russian ideology during the Cold War. What it takes to become a chess champion now compared to 50 years ago and why Garry considers the game “one of the most aggressive forces of psychological warfare.” What can and can’t be applied from chess to politics and decision making. What Garry knows from experience about authoritarian governments and why we need to be vigilant against them now more than ever. Is our civilization poised for progress or ruin now that supercomputers can beat superhumans at tournament-level chess? 359: Justin Ramsdell | How to Detect and Disarm Pseudoscience

359: Justin Ramsdell | How to Detect and Disarm Pseudoscience

Justin Ramsdell is a clinical psychologist, an expert witness, an assistant professor of forensic psychology at George Mason University, and a veteran pseudoscience detector. What We Discuss with Justin Ramsdell: Why stressed brains don't make great decisions (especially when there's no light visible at the end of the tunnel to indicate that there is an end). How pseudoscience preys on our cognitive biases to give us the answers we want with the scantest of unprovable "evidence." Why watching YouTube videos and ranting in Reddit threads doesn't count as "research" in the same way that work done by field-experienced scientists with doctorate degrees and peer-reviewed studies under their belts counts as research. Be wary of intellectual trespassers -- who might very well be field-experienced scientists with doctorate degrees and peer-reviewed studies under their belts, but make wild, pseudoscientific claims about areas outside their expertise (e.g., a chiropractor who claims to cure COVID-19 with massage). Why you don't have to be a field-experienced scientist with a doctorate degree and peer-reviewed studies under your belt to avoid being hoodwinked by pseudoscience charlatans. And much more... 358: Is My Friend Blowing Her IVF Money on Gifts? | Feedback Friday

358: Is My Friend Blowing Her IVF Money on Gifts? | Feedback Friday

Your friend wants to be a mother more than anything, but says she and her husband can’t afford the IVF it would take to make this possible. On the other hand, she habitually buys expensive gifts for everyone in your social circle. Is there any socially acceptable way for you to have a conversation with her about priorities? We’ll tackle this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn’t already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let’s dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/358. On This Week’s Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Is your friend — who says she wants to be a mother more than anything — blowing the money she could be using for IVF on expensive gifts for everyone else? And if so, is there any socially acceptable way for you to have a discussion with her about it? You were on the path to a job in a new field until the pandemic hit, and now you’re finding it hard to land interviews without past experience on your resume. Should you go back to your old field in the meantime until things go more or less back to normal? There’s a gap on your resume where you took a year off of college to go to drug and alcohol rehab. Is there a way to spin this positively? While you’ve sought therapy to mitigate the effects of your father’s abuse as a child, your BPD-diagnosed sister hasn’t — and it causes her to act out in ways that are dangerous to herself and others. How can you best help her? How do you decide when it’s worth pushing through something (like learning a new language), or quitting because it causes anxiety and isn’t pleasant to endure at the time? Life Pro Tip: If a bee colony has set up a hive that you need removed, don’t call the exterminator. Google local beekeepers, who will relocate the hive often for free. This is an easy way to be nice to the bees and to your wallet! 357: Robin Dreeke | Sizing People Up

Robin Dreeke (@rdreeke) is the retired head of The FBI Behavioral Analysis Program and co-author of Sizing People Up: A Veteran FBI Agent's User Manual for Behavior Prediction and The Code of Trust: An American Counterintelligence Expert's Five Rules to Lead and Succeed. What We Discuss with Robin Dreeke: People can be relied on to act in their own best interest (from their perspective, not yours). Just because you like somebody for any number of commonalities doesn't necessarily mean you can (or should) trust them. Why it creeps us out when people try too hard to get us to like them (and how we can avoid creeping out others when establishing rapport). Four principles that allow you to make any conversation about the other person -- and therefore more aligned with their best interest. How and why professionals who should understand the basics of rapport-building consistently fail (and how they can correct course). And much more... 356: How to Make the Most of Quarantine | Deep Dive

356: How to Make the Most of Quarantine | Deep Dive

Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) joins us for this deep dive exploring the ups and downs of COVID-19 pandemic life and how to make the most of quarantine to emerge better, not beaten, from the experience. [Featured photo by Kari Shea] What We Discuss with Gabriel Mizrahi: While you may not be able to control how long the pandemic lasts, you can control your response to it — is there opportunity nestled in the setback? How to use this downtime to strengthen relationships and build skills so you can springboard into action when things regain a semblance of normality. From which everyday nuisances are you spared while quarantining? For which often overlooked boons should you be grateful now? How to work efficiently and effectively from home even if you’ve always relied on the benevolent micromanagement skills of your resident office busybody. How you and your kids could benefit from using this time to learn new skills together — like a new language you can bond over long after the pandemic passes. 355: My Roommate Tried to Kill Me! | Feedback Friday

355: My Roommate Tried to Kill Me! | Feedback Friday

Your unstable roommate physically attacked you over an argument about laundry, and then she filed a protection from abuse order against you! Now even your family doesn't seem to believe your side of things, and abuse hotlines seem to dismiss you immediately because of your Y chromosome. Even though you're in debt, should you get a lawyer to defend you in case she tries to extort you through the legal system? We'll tackle this and more here on Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, we banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/355. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: After seven-and-a-half years, we're losing a J! :( When an unstable roommate tries to kill you and then convinces your family and friends and the legal system that you tried to kill her, is it time to get a lawyer even on your tight budget? [Thanks to Corbin Payne for weighing in!] You're self-conscious about being Asian American during this pandemic, and your sister is even getting racist verbal abuse hurled at her in high school. What is the right attitude and perspective for you both to carry during this trying time? What's the least awkward way to respond when someone self-deprecates themself in comparison to you? You were recently selected for a diplomatic job in the Balkans with the Army, and despite your aversion to firearms, you'll be required to carry one. How do you mentally prepare for this compromise of your pacifist ideals? You're one semester from college graduation, but nobody in your family knows your GPA is disappointingly low. To top it off, your three younger siblings are set for Ivy League schools and you feel like an unemployable fraud in comparison. How can you improve your outlook? 354: ZDoggMD | Debunking Plandemic COVID-19 Pseudoscience

354: ZDoggMD | Debunking Plandemic COVID-19 Pseudoscience

ZDoggMD (@ZDoggMD) [aka Zubin Damania] is a physician, assistant professor, comedian, Internet personality, musician, founder of Turntable Health, and host of The ZDoggMD Show. What We Discuss with ZDoggMD: No, COVID-19 wasn't cooked up in a lab somewhere to wreak havoc on the world's populace at the behest of elite politicians and scientists. No, COVID-19 is not "activated" by wearing face masks designed to protect you and others from the spread of pathogens. No, Dr. Anthony Fauci wasn't responsible for destroying Judy Mikovits' career and covering up her (discredited) contributions to medical science. No, Italian vaccines aren't to blame for causing COVID-19 symptoms in otherwise healthy people. No, Jordan Harbinger and Dr. Zubin Damania are not shills for the Illuminati. And much more...
