Being a Peleonera with Impact with Liz Ramirez

On this episode of Cafe con Pam, join host Pam as she sits down with Liz Ramirez, the president and CEO of Chicano Federation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to equity and access for marginalized communities. They delve into the history of Chicano Federation, which was formed in the late 60s to advocate for the rights of Latinos, particularly those of Mexican descent, in the face of anti-immigrant rhetoric and discrimination. They discuss the organization's early victories, such as preventing the construction of a Highway Patrol substation and establishing Chicano Park as a community space promoting cultural history. Pam and Liz also explore the relaunch of the Leadership Training Institute, a program aimed at developing leaders and driving community change. They highlight the importance of having leaders who not only look like the community they serve but also share their values. The program will consist of monthly meetings, learning from experts, and mentorship, culminating in a day of advocacy in Sacramento for Latino rights. In addition to discussing Chicano Federation and community impact, Pam and Liz touch on various topics, including the power of persistence in sales, the importance of support within under-recognized communities, and the personal journeys that led them to their respective roles. Overall, this episode provides a deep dive into the work of Chicano Federation, featuring insightful conversations and personal stories from Liz Ramirez, showcasing the power of being a "peleonera" (a fighter) with impact.
