In this episode, I talk with Anne Rapp Py-Daniel and Myrtle Pearl Shock about the importance of local history, particularly the long period of pre-European history in Brazil, and their initiative “Arqueologia nas Escolas: Histórias da Amazônia” which is introducing local histories and hands-on learning to the public school curriculum in Pará state, in the northeast of Brazil.

About Anne Rapp Py-Daniel


Dr. Py-Daniel is a professor of archaeology at the Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará (UFOPA) in the city of Santarém, in northeastern Brazil. Her work focuses on the archaeology of death, taphonomic processes, particularly in the Amazon. She is currently working on the dissemination of archaeological knowledge in to the public.

About Myrtle Pearl Shock


Dr. Shock is a professor of archaeology at the Universidade Federal do Oeste do Pará (UFOPA) in the city of Santarém, in northeastern Brazil. Her work focuses on issues of environmental management and plant cultivation in the lowlands, cerrado and tropical forest, through palaeoetnobotanical research.
