Italian Folk Magic & Shamanism with Dr Angela Puca

Italian Folk Magic & Shamanism with Dr Angela Puca

This month, I've got the joy of introducing you to Dr Angela Puca, who holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in philosophy. In 2021, The University of Leeds awarded her a PhD in Religious Studies, which will soon be published with Brill.

Her research focuses on magic, witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, shamanism, and related currents.

Author of several peer-reviewed publications and co-editor of the forthcoming ‘Pagan Religions in five Minutes’ for Equinox, she hopes to bridge the gap between academia and the communities of magic practitioners by delivering related scholarly content on her YouTube Channel and TikTok ‘Angela’s Symposium' - https://www.youtube.com/c/AngelasSymposium

Find Angela on Instagram and TikTok at @drangelapuca or on X at @AngelaPuca11.

In this interview, we chat about magic from an academic perspective, what Italian folk magic is, and the thorny debate about whether religion and magic are the same thing!

The Folklore of Paper: Charms, Folk Songs, and Bibliomancy

The Folklore of Paper: Charms, Folk Songs, and Bibliomancy

Paper is a wonderful material. It's portable and light, and as an everyday material, charms made from paper can be easily overlooked. We can reshape it, recycle it, and completely destroy it...or we can use it to preserve ideas! All of these qualities help explore why it can be a material of choice in some folk magic. Let's find out why it's perfect for spells and charms in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! The Folklore of Glass: Slippers and Superstitions

The Folklore of Glass: Slippers and Superstitions

Glass is a strange material. Its original source material is sand, but it needs human intervention through the application of heat and other processes to find form. We can see through it, but we can't touch what's on the other side. You can use it to concentrate a light source. Or it's helpful if you want to protect your eyes, but still see what you're doing. Both solid and fragile, it can be used to make art, or poison bottles. It often depicts tales of myth or religious instruction through stained glass in churches. And we can't forget its appearance in fairy tales through glass coffins or slippers. Let's take a look at how glass appears in the world of superstitions, fairy tales, and even fairy lore in this week's episode of Fabulous Folklore! The Folklore of Metals: Gold, Silver, Iron & Copper
