Anatomy of A Trial: Voir Dire: Attorney Tim Sledd Explains Jury Selection

We talk about a criminal trial as if it was a single event but of course that’s not entirely true. A trial is made up of multiple parts starting with jury selection and going all the way to the delivery of a verdict. Not all of these stages of a trial always get attention but each of them can be tremendously important. In fact, some attorneys claim that a trial can be won or lost in the jury selection process– and that, of course, happens before any case is made to that jury. That is why we have decided to launch a new occasional series we are calling Anatomy of A Trial. In each segment, we will talk to an experienced trial lawyer who will go in depth with us about a particular piece of a trial.

Our expert today is Tim Sledd. We will be talking with Tim about voir dire, the process of jury selection. How are jurors picked? What kind of strategies do lawyers use when looking for jurors? How do attorneys try to build a rapport with jurors even before opening statements are delivered?

We wish I could automate all our New Year’s resolutions. Like if we didn’t have to muster the willpower to go on a walk for exercise, or if we could automatically kick ourselves off our phones and launch Margaret Millar books into our hands instead, that’d be awesome. Scary but super helpful.

But some things you can automate, like financial goals. That’s where the investing app Acorns comes in. If you’re like us, you’d like to save more money and improve your personal finance for the New Year. Acorns can be your secret weapon in a world where it sometimes feels impossible to get ahead of all those little expenses that drain our bank accounts.

We’re so grateful that today’s episode is sponsored by Acorns! Acorns makes it easy to start automatically saving and investing so your money has a chance to grow for you, your kids, and your retirement. You don’t need to be an expert. Acorns will recommend a diversified portfolio that fits you and your money goals. You don’t need to be rich. Acorns lets you invest with the spare money you’ve got right now. You can start with $5 or even just your spare change.

Take more control of your financial future now. Set up your Acorns account and start investing in just 5 minutes. Acorns gives you small, simple steps to get you and your money on track. Basically, Acorns does the hard part so you can give your money a chance to grow.

At the end of the day, we run a small business, so we know firsthand how hard it can be to figure out money stuff. Plus, we’re not very financially minded. Áine is a history major. Kevin is an English major. We’re not savvy with finances. An app like Acorns is a gamechanger because it allows you to automate so much of this without having to actively think about it.

The Donut Shop Killers: The Fallout

The Donut Shop Killers: The Fallout

When we covered the Donut Shop murders last year, we didn't get into one particularly disturbing element of the case. When Sherman McCrary and Carl Taylor embarked on their violent, cross-country rampage, they didn't just have their wives in tow. They brought along Ginger McCrary-Taylor's young sons as well. This week, we present the conclusion of our talk with Jerry Nations, one of those sons. Jerry shares the story of what it was like to reunite with Ginger as an adult — and will reveal the surprising truth of what she did for a living. .Thanks again to Jerry Nations for being so open and generous with his time. The Delphi Murders: Vegas Dreams

The Delphi Murders: Vegas Dreams

Correction: In this episode, we said that Tony Kline deleted his Facebook. That was incorrect. It appears that Kline blocked Murder Sheet co-creator Kevin Greenlee when he reached out for comment, so it only appeared that his page was gone. We regret the error. On Facebook, Kegan Anthony Kline posted that he was starting a new job in Las Vegas on the day that Abby Williams and Liberty German were murdered in Delphi, Indiana. But does Kline's Vegas alibi hold up? In this episode, the Murder Sheet speaks with business owners and casino employees to attempt to get to the truth. This episode takes a break from our focus on restaurant homicides, and is part of our intermittent series of episodes on the Delphi case. If you have information on the Delphi murders, send your confidential tip to abbyandlibbytip@cacoshrf.com or call 844-459-5786, 800-382-7537 or 765-564-2413.Follow the Murder Sheet on social media:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC .See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

You Never Can Forget: The Emails

You Never Can Forget: The Emails

A few weeks back, we covered the saga of how serial plagiarist Ashley Flowers worked out a deal with Indiana State Police investigator Bill Dalton to get the exclusive right to access — and make money off of —the Burger Chef investigative files Dalton had been entrusted with.To learn more about that sorry affair, please listened to "You Never Can Forget: The Fiasco" (https://tinyurl.com/5n82x5wn).This week, we're back with more information on this mess, thanks to a records request that the ISP just (finally) completed. In this episode, we'll get into bizarre details about the Red Ball collaboration, like how Dalton and Flowers mocked other podcasters and planned trips to Idaho together. We'll also feature insights from Chris Davis, another podcaster who's covered the Burger Chef case. Here is a link to the definition we cited in the program: https://www.yourdictionary.com/silver-platter-doctrineFollow the Murder Sheet on social media:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC .See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
