45 - Suicide for the Tribe

This is what Rant & Reason has to say: "Years ago Xerox did this experiment in order to figure out why some of their salesmen were only making 10s of thousands, while others were making millions. So they took their top 10 sales guys, and bottom 10, and made them switch sales territories. They expected to find that the low sellers were making millions and the million sellers were down to the 10s of thousands. What they

found instead is that within the YEAR, the guys who used to make millions were back up to making the same they were before. And the guys who were making 10s of thousands, self sabotaged and brought those territories down to EXACTLY the same amount they were making before. This all has to do with self belief and identity, which comes from our evolutionary past. As an example, have you ever been to a place that's kind of loud, like a sports bar type of place. And you go with a bunch of friends, and there is always that 1 guy who is really really loud, and you kinda get nervous when he's that loud and you tell him to keep it down. That is because your brain actually

limits your behavior in relation to what it feels your social value is. So if you're the dominant alpha male of the tribe, you can make as much noise as you want. But if you're a lowly male in the tribe and you're too loud, he's going to smash your face with a rock and you will most likely die." It's funny that Rant and Reason brings up the issue of the loud guy at the sports bar. In a group of friends I hang around with there is one such guy that's loud and obnoxious. Me and my other friends always try to get him to shut up because he's embarrassing us or drawing attention to us. And not positive attention. Whenever we used to hang around with women and he left the women would start talking to us and telling us they were glad he was gone because he was really annoying. This obnoxious guy I'm referring to is almost always loud and hyper and he hasn't had a girlfriend in years. So my experience is the loud guy at the sports bar is not the alpha unless what he says appeals to women. Regardless of my my loud and obnoxious friend, I agree that in most if you see yourself as more valuable and important then other people in your social circle and project that to strangers it will make you more successful business person because people will see your confidence and trust you.
