The Journey of a First-Gen College Student Through Academia: Meet Dr. Brandy L. Simula

Dr. Brandy L. Simula (she/her/hers) is a professional developer and a Board-Certified career, professional and life design coach who works with graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and higher education leaders.

She currently leads the Office of Faculty Professional Development at the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a 2020-22 Leadership Fellow of the University System of Georgia.

Dr. Simula holds a PhD in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a concentration in Sociology from Emory University. She earned both a Bachelor of Arts & Science at Appalachian State University in Sociology, French, History & Women's Studies.

In this episode, she shares:

  • Her philosophy on having a professional portfolio of multiple jobs/projects you work on vs. having just one job

  • How having a high school teacher who took her ideas and thoughts seriously helped her become the 1st in her family to attend college and earn a PhD

  • Why it's important to advocate for yourself and not accept no as answer when you're pursuing something you really want to do

  • How learning how to think and problem-solve helped her get a job in an industry where she had no experience

  • What questions you should ask yourself before deciding to pursue a PhD
