Leadership on the Go: Brain-based Insights into Psychological Safety

Episode Summary:

In this episode, I take a neuroscience-based approach to further break down the concept of psychological safety in the workplace. The discussion revolves around the brain's perpetual drive to minimize threats and maximize rewards and how understanding this pattern can aid in fostering a psychologically safe environment. I introduce Dr. David Rock's SCARF model - Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness - as a tool to help leaders create a conducive, safe workspace where social needs are met, and the potential threat response is minimized.

Key Themes:

The brain's function- The brain is constantly attempting to minimize threats and maximize rewards, leading to varying stress responses and reactions to perceived threats in the workplace.

The SCARF model- A tool that outlines the five key domains that influence our human social experiences and determine if we feel safe or not. These domains include Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, and Fairness.

Application of the SCARF model- Examples of how the SCARF model can be applied in real-life scenarios to create a psychologically safe environment.
