088 - Don't Say Queer

088 - Don't Say Queer

In this episode, Savannah shares with Julie a somewhat bigoted and hateful meme that one of her neighbors posted on social media. They posted that until Jesus can be talked about in the classroom, gender shouldn't be. In the wake of Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill which, in part, bans school administrators, counselors, and teachers from being able to discuss the gender and sexual diversity, the meme from someone who lives less than a hundred yards from where Savannah lives and records hit too close to home--both metaphorical and literally. What follows is a discussion of what both sides may be looking and hoping for with the passage/overturning of bills such as this one. Why is discussion of boy/girl as gender okay while any alternative to the social norms faces bans, censure, and discrimination? Why does sexual education start and end with biological boy meets biological girl? While Julie and Savannah usually stay away from politics and religion, this series of topics just hit too close to home.

SAVANNAH HAUK is the author of “Living with Crossdressing: Defining a New Normal” and “Living with Crossdressing: Discovering your True Identity“. While both focus on the male-to-female (mtf) crossdresser, “Defining a New Normal” delves into crossdressing and relationships and “Discovering Your True Identity” looks at the individual crossdressing journey. Her latest achievement is a TEDx Talk entitled "Demystifying the Crossdressing Experience". Savannah is a male-to-female dual-gender crossdresser who is visible in the Upstate of South Carolina, active in local groups and advocating as a public speaker at LGBTQ+ conferences and workshops across the United States. At the moment, Savannah is working on more books, blogs, and projects focused on letting every crossdresser–young and mature–find their own confidence, expression, identity and voice.
