#03 - What is Life Coaching?

#03 - What is Life Coaching?

In this episode I’ll give you a intro to what life coaching is. It’s not just this hippy-dippy, touchy-feely woo woo stuff. It is actual practical resources and processes to help you achieve the goals you want to reach. A life coach is a lot like a sports coach (it is branched off of sports coaching). Being a figure skating coach, I can easily draw the similarities and each experience improves the other. In skating, I wear different hats. I am a teacher of skills, I am a critic, I am a choreographer, I am a goal setter, I am a planner, I am a guide, I am a manager and I am a cheerleader. With life coaching, I am a listener, I am a questioner, I am a goal setter, I am a planner, I am a guide, I am a manager, I am a cheerleader. The content we are dealing with is different - athletic skills compared to thoughts and ideas - but a lot of the process of helping someone achieve their goals is the same. It’s understanding what they want to achieve, what that actually looks like when it is achieved (mental model of required skill), building plans for it and encouraging them along the way to get it. A coach is also there to hold up a mirror to ourselves. They can easily spot patterns and insecurities we didn’t know were there. They can give us a truthful answer of how we might be blocking ourselves from what we say we want. They can help us side-step the fear and do it anyway. Listen to the episode to learn more about how coaching works and what you might want to use it for.
