Ketotarian, Calming Inflammation, Why Conventional Medicine Fails – Dr. Will Cole: KKP 003

Ketotarian, Calming Inflammation, Why Conventional Medicine Fails – Dr. Will Cole: KKP 003

In this episode, I interview top functional medicine practitioner Dr. Will Cole. He is the author of Ketotarian® and was named one of the top 50 functional-medicine and integrative doctors in the nation and is a health expert and course instructor for the world’s largest wellness brands such as Mindbodygreen and Goop. In this episode, Dr. Cole talks about: Functional medicine and emphasizes the importance of our relationship with our body and food He shares a few powerful messages. One of which is “You cannot heal a body you hate.” We talked about transitioning from vegetarian to ketotarian, Why conventional medicine has failed us And much more Learn more about Dr. Will Cole here https://drwillcole.com/ [0:35] Dr. Cole’s interesting childhood He grew up outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and he lived his childhood a little bit different than most kids. He grew up eating organic foods and drinking Adaptogenic Tonics which are not normal during the 80s and 90s. He learned and understand food and developed his relationship with health and wellness at a very young age. When he was 16 years old, Dr. Cole already knew he wanted to get into wellness in some way. At Southern California University of Health Sciences, he started focusing on functional medicine. [4:08] Practicing virtual functional medicine Hundred percent (100%) of Dr. Cole’s patients/clients are online. Dr. Will Cole together with his team consult world wide in Autoimmune, Brain, Gut, Hormone, and Thyroid health. It is convenient for people who may not have access to a nearby functional medicine doctor. [5:54] What is it like living in Dr. Cole’s household? Dr. Cole and his wife have 2 wonderful kids, a son and a daughter. One cool thing about being a functional medicine practitioner who gets invited into workshops or seminars is him being able to bring his family and give them front row seats for his talks. His son is very much into the concept of helping people. Of his two kids, his son will most likely be into the health and wellness field as well. On eating healthy foods: Dr. Cole shifts his kids’ mindset into eating healthy foods. He would normally say to them “Look at the healthy food we get to eat and feel great as a result of it.” Loving your body enough to feed it well: For adults, little boys and little girls, it is very important to have a healthy relationship with food. See you child as an individual and observe how they receive information. Make their foods age-appropriate as well. Foods you eat impact your hormonal levels. It’s not about punishing your body by not having all the good stuff. It’s really about focusing on all the good stuff and the grace that we get from feeding our body good things. [10:45] Why is it important to get a comprehensive health history of patients? Most of Dr. Cole’s patients have seen previous doctors before they consult with him. His job as a functional medicine practitioner is to find out what’s been missed out on his clients pile of laboratory reports. Thorough medical history is not respected enough even though it gives a lot of information. If you have a doctor or a medical practitioner who’s asking you basic questions and not digging into your history, consider that a red flag. [14:36] Rigged system: Experiencing symptoms but not sick enough to be diagnosed The system is broken and it is distracted on things that are not the most effective but with the least amount of side effects. The system is largely trained to diagnose a disease and match it with a medication. Main options of people with autoimmune issues are steroids, immuno-suppresants and biological drugs. They don’t put everybody on this medication but when it gets bad enough, they basically punish and suppress the immune system down. These problems don’t happen overnight. By the time it gets to the point where they want to put you on these medications, that’s an average of 10 years prior to the diagnosis. All chronic problems are called chronic for a reason. They don’t happen overnight. Dr. Cole’s book, The Inflammation Spectrum, will help you discover how inflammation is at the core of most common health woes. Some people have been sick for so long. They will never be 100% better. But, we have to get them the best they can be and live the best life they can live. That’s a better alternative than taking a medication for the rest of your life. Functional medicine is revolutionary. Today, conventionally trained hospitals are now providing functional medicine clinics. We have to do different to see something different. [19:34] Dr. Cole was a vegetarian for 10 years until his health starts declining Just because something is better doesn’t mean it’s optimal long-term. Dr. Cole transitioned into being vegetarian to being a ketotarian. [21:22] Exercise and Eating Healthy Food and exercise are both important. They are two sides of the same coin. Food is such a powerful driver. It is primary and exercise is icing on the cake. The ratio between food and exercise looks different for different people. Dr. Cole loves his Peleton bike but he also do yoga and gym circuits. [25:36] The problem with Orthorexia, the obsessive behavior in pursuit of a healthy diet Orthorexia starts with good intentions but ends with health problems. We have to untangle that stress and obsession and start healing the person physically but also heal the person’s relationship with food. [27:15] A peek on Ketotarian, Dr. Cole’s book Ketotarian: A ketogenic plant-based rockstar The ketogenic diet kick-starts your body's metabolism so it burns fat, instead of sugar, as its primary fuel. Burning sugar vs. Burning fat: Sugar burning diet is basically the standard American diet. Little metabolic flexibility Fat burning diet regain your metabolic flexibility. Creates food freedom Tames inflammation and cravings Achieves peak physical and mental performance Statistics: Nearly 20% of all adults have a diagnosable mental disorder. 81% of Americans take atleast 1 medication per day. Out of 68 children, there is 1 diagnosed as autistic. The United States spends more on healthcare than the next top 10 spending countries combined but ranks last on living a long and healthy life. [33:37] Research has shown, over 90% of our longevity is determined by the choices we make, not our genetics Genetics is a piece of the puzzle but it’s not the biggest piece. Majority of health problems we see today are largely influenced by epigenetics. Know that you have control over your destiny. It’s not your DNA that determines your destiny. [35:55] Huge misconceptions about conventional doctors and nutritional advice Research has shown that most doctors would fail a basic nutrition test. Conventional medical doctors should be trained in the nutritional aspect because most of their patients have problems largely influenced by lifestyle. Most conventional doctors nowadays engage in learning activities about functional medicine where they are learning things they didn’t learn at medical school. [40:40] Eliminating Inflammation with a Personalized Ketogenic Diet The Inflammation Spectrum: Functional medicine lifestyle guide to start finding out which foods work best for your body In this book, Dr. Cole eloquently explains the root cause of health problems and offers a fun, innovative plan to begin lowering inflammation and reclaiming optimal wellness. The book will be released on October 2019. Pre-order The Inflammation Spectrum here. [43:20] Love and Gratitude: Two of the biggest healers in our world You cannot heal a body you hate. If you get your head, heart and your relationship with food and your body right, that will create in infrastructure for sustainable wellness. It will also lower your stress levels. It will create a healing environment. It’s not just about food and movement. It’s also your mental, emotional and spiritual health. Mental health is physical health. AND MUCH MORE! Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Today’s episode is a story about pain and struggles and how these experiences help develop passion and purpose. Autumn Smith, joins us today to share her own wellness journey of healing from IBS and her mission to inspire people to take care of themselves. She gives tips on diet and nutrition, exercise, drugs/medicines, and routine for greater physical and mental health, including the importance of consistently testing your blood sugar levels. You don’t want to miss this one!   Autumn suffered acute digestive issues since she was a teenager and numerous experts failed to offer solutions that worked. Very concerned, her husband, Chas took matters into his own hands. His extensive research led him to the paleo diet.   Together they implemented its principles for 30 days and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. With this wonderful learning experience, Autumn focused on disseminating information to facilitate wellness for everyone. She achieves this through Paleovalley and Wild Pastures.   Paleovalley creates products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health. Their products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs. I, myself, testify to that.   If you want to know more about their products and try them for yourself, visit their store here. Get 10% off of your products by using the code: KETOKAMP10.   In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:30] From Pain to Purpose Autumn started to have digestion issues as early as 10 years old. They jumped from doctor to doctor and nobody really gave her a ‘healing’ answer. Autumn managed her pain on her own and she now knows that there’s a profound gut and brain connection. With Autumn’s decision to manage it instead of address it, her mental health started to deteriorate. It was so bad that Autumn was kicked out of her parents’ house before she even graduated from high school. This experience helped her develop the level responsibility she has today. From rock bottom, she pulled it together, got to college, moved to LA, pursued a dance career where she worked for Tracy Anderson, a celebrity fitness trainer. Her husband noticed that she is still suffering a lot that they decided to visit one last doctor. Still, no ‘healing’ answer was given. Through their self-guided research, she and her husband healed her digestive issues with the paleo diet. Within 30 days of the paleo diet, her digestive issues completely went away. Through Paleovalley, Autumn’s purpose is to facilitate wellness for everyone else by disseminating excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide   [5:50] Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Feeling bloated after meals. Experiencing pain and cramps in the lower abdomen. Getting itchy skin rashes or blisters. Deteriorating mental health. Unstable blood sugar levels.   [6:40] There is no cookie-cutter approach on regulating your blood sugar levels. Keto diet has been shown to improve blood sugar control. Regulating your blood sugar level is similar to a fingerprint. It is very unique. Number 1 step: Test your blood sugar levels. It is important to test. You cannot get all the information you need from the glycemic index and glycemic load. Fifty (50%) of people today are insulin resistant → highly correlated with the number of people with mental health issues.     [9:33] Mental Health, Drugs and Nutrition. Anti-anxiety drugs increase the risk of addiction in just 4 days. The pharmaceutical industry taught us the depression is just a case of serotonin-deficiency. Dietary intervention for people with mental health issues: Stabilize your blood sugar level. Address nutrient-deficiency. Track nutrition & count calories. (e.g Cronometer) Most mental health issues today are rooted with the immune system inflammation. Make sure you are not eating inflammatory foods. Identify your food sensitivities and gut issues.   [15:58] Foods, Anxiety and Depression Foods that trigger anxiety and depression: Sugar Gluten Back in the 1950s, there’s an association with gluten and schizophrenia Dairy Gluten and dairy breakdown into exorphins. These chemicals make you feel good in the moment but a little while after, they take you down and make you feel terrible. Caffeine Foods that reduce anxiety and depression: Seafoods (B12 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids) Organ Meats Vitamin A Folate Riboflavin Vegetables For a full list of foods with purported mental-health benefits, check out the study Antidepressant foods: An evidence-based nutrient profiling system for depression   [23:20] Story behind Paleovalley To heal her digestive issues, Autumn eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood. By the end of a 30-day period, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved Autumn and her husband, Chas, originally focused on disseminating information. They soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Realizing that they had an important job to do, they launched Paleovalley which aims to create products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health.   [27:35] Folate vs. Folic Acid Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9. Research suggests that your body won’t use it as efficiently as folate. Folate is the food form of vitamin B9. People with MTHFR, a genetic mutation 50% of the population has, won't be able to use these fake B Vitamins which interferes with the metabolism of the real ones.   [30:00] Differentiating grass fed animals from the others Grass fed animals are fed with grass and grains. They are free to roam around in their pasture. They are not exposed to pesticides. Products of grass fed animals have higher nutrient levels, better fatty acid profile, higher antioxidant levels and higher mineral content. Grass fed farmers can use a number of different grazing styles. Continuous grazing Animals graze a pasture for an extended amount of time with no, or infrequent rest to the plants from grazing. Not ideal since it degrades the environment Rotational grazing Mimic nature A system where a large pasture is divided into smaller paddocks allowing livestock to be easily moved from one paddock to another Stimulates rapid grass growth   [38:18] Autumn’s decision of not being in retail stores Paleovalley’s goal is to produce affordable products for consumers. “If we don’t go to retail, we don’t pay the extra costs associated with going into retail.” This allows them to keep their integrity high. “Our ultimate goal is to make it accessible. Retail, sometimes, does the opposite.”   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle To know more about Autumn Smith and Paleovalley, click here Wild Pastures - From Pasture-Centric Farms To Your Table Connect with Autumn: autumn@paleovalley.com Check out Paleovalley’s products. A study showed a 2,000% increase in HGH after a 24 hour fast in men, and a 1,300% increase in HGH after a 24 hours fast in women. 07:28 Interesting Fasting Facts: In ancient Egypt, India and Greece, dosed starvation was used as for a curative and preventive purposes, as to strengthen the spirit.   It is known that Pythagoras (580-500 years. BC), Greek philosopher and mathematician, founder of the famous school of philosophy, systematically starved for 40 days, rightly believing that it increases the mental perception and creativity. He demanded strict 40-day fast on water alone from each of his numerous disciples and followers.   Hippocrates (460-357 years BC) - a physician who owns a great medical commandment: “Do no harm!”, was an ardent supporter of moderation and treatment through fasting. He wrote: “The addition of food should be much rarer, since it is often useful to completely take it away while the patient can withstand it, until the force of the disease reaches its maturity. The man carries within him a doctor; you just have to help him do his work. If the body is not cleared, then the more you feed it, the more it will be harmed. When a patient is fed too richly, the disease is fed as well. Remember – any excess is against nature.”   11:20 Benefits of intermittent fasting. 13:03 Is fasting effective against cancer? 14:35 Does intermittent fasting help to burn fat? 16:59 What will happen to my blood sugar levels when I intermittent fast? 18:53 Will I go into starvation mode when intermittent fasting? 20:47 Will I lose muscle when intermittent fasting?   // R E S O U R C E S Benefits of fasting study:  https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-04/imc-sfr033111.php   Study shows a 13% increase in metabolism after 4 consecutive days of fasting:  https://idmprogram.com/fix-broken-metabolism/     Join The Keto Kamp Inner Circle: https://www.ketokamp.com  Get the Keto Kickstart Guide for FREE: http://www.ketokickstartguide.com   Get my FREE Fasting Cheat Sheet: http://www.fastingcheatsheet.com YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/ketokamp  My Favorite Keto Beef Jerky & More: http://www.paleovalley.com Use coupon code ketokamp10 for 10% off   This podcast is for information purposes only. The Brain & Heart Connection, Busting Self Limiting Beliefs, Love & Gratitude – Sean Croxton KKP 18

The Brain & Heart Connection, Busting Self Limiting Beliefs, Love & Gratitude – Sean Croxton KKP 18

Today’s episode might be a little bit different than all of the previous ones. Still, it is as insightful as ever, especially because I am joined by the mastermind behind the Keto Kamp movement. I am humbled to be joined by Sean Croxton, a podcast host, author, entrepreneur, and prosperity teacher. I followed his growth and career for the past 8 years, most especially when he still hosts the Underground Wellness Radio, one of the internet’s most popular health podcasts.   During his seven years with Underground Wellness, Sean penned the still-popular Dark Side of Fat Loss ebook, started the JERF (Just Eat Real Food) movement, and hosted seven online summit events, including The Thyroid Sessions, Digestion Sessions, and The Depression Sessions.   Now, Sean is the host of The Quote of The Day Show, the #1 daily motivational podcast, featuring short inspirational teachings from the best of the best speakers. He is also the creator of Money Mind Academy, an 8-week course that will completely change your relationship with money.   In this episode, Sean shares the story of how his hardwork and determination got him to where he is today. He also explained the science behind developing a habit while we dive deep into physiology, neurocardiology, brain chemistry and how it is connected with your keto diet and fasting. Tune in! In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:55] Sean Croxton, the early years Sean’s mother worked three jobs. By the time he wakes up in the morning, his mom is already at work. When he goes to bed at night, his mom is still at work.  “If I didn’t have that experience of living at the poverty line, I probably wouldn’t have the value that I have on abundance.” His early years was a great learning experience for him. It showed him the value of earning money.  It showed him the freedom of earning money. It showed him that in order to have more money, you gotta do more service.   [8:18] The audio clip that helped changed Sean’s life  In November of 2009, his friend, Antonio, sent him an audio clip of John Demartini. “The amount of money that you have will always be in direct proportion to the quality and quantity of the service you provide.”   [17:10] After graduating from college, Sean became a personal trainer. His uncle and his aunt were his biggest influences on why he took health in college.  As a personal trainer, Sean had to build up the courage to talk to people when suffering with social anxiety. He had his first panic attack while doing some personal training. His doctor prescribed him Prozac but what he really wanted was Paxil. While training his last client, he found himself in the midst of a “Prozac-induced” panic attack. His social anxiety isn't completely gone and Sean's ok with that. He prefers to call it introversion. [22:32] Back in 2008, Sean launched his first show, Underground Wellness Radio. The podcast ran for 7 years and he released 348 episodes over this period of time. Surprising to most, in 2015 Sean closed up shop with his brand Underground Wellness. “Passions have seasons, and all seasons eventually come to an end.” - Lisa Nichols Sean felt that his passion for interviewing health experts is over.    [26:08] The importance of passion and loving what you do for a living If you are not living according to your highest values, it means you are not really living.  You are living by social idealisms. You are living by something outside of you. Life is too short for that. A lot of us are trapped in the ‘how’ When you are fully aligned with your values, the ‘how’ just shows up.   [27:23] Sean's motivational influences after shutting down Underground Wellness Sean was super deep into reading books by John F. Demartini.  Books by Demartini: How to Make One Hell of a Profit and Still Get to Heaven   The Breakthrough Experience The Gratitude Effect The Values Factor   He also read books by Bob Proctor. Books by Bob Proctor:   You Were Born Rich The Art of Living   Sean dived deep into physiology, neuroscience and brain chemistry. On his new YouTube Channel, Mind Kamp, he flipped the focus to personal development with a sprinkle of health.   [31:22] Neurocardiology: Interaction between the brain and the heart In the communication between the brain and the heart, 90% of it goes from the heart to the brain. There’s a little brain inside our hearts that stores information, memories, personalities, etc. Our hearts are our point of attraction.  Heart rate variability is the physiological phenomenon of variation in the time interval between heartbeats. We don’t want these to be to low. That would mean we are unhealthy.  Emotions dictate your heart rate variability.  Measure your heart rate variability through: Oura Ring emWave2 [34:11] Adding love and gratitude into your keto diet and fasting Meditation comes a long way. emWave2: emWave 2 helps with the analysis of HRV that reflects heart-brain interaction and autonomic nervous system dynamics, which are particularly sensitive to changes in your emotional state. emWave2 technology is based on "the coherence breakthrough". Coherence is a state of synchronization between your heart, brain and autonomic nervous system which has been proven to have numerous mental, emotional and physical benefits. [36:44] Your brain is the record of the past The past is literally composed of electrical current that flows in your brain.  These electrical thoughts become your biochemical feelings.  How to change these wirings? 1. Relax Get out of the high beta brain wave state.  Calm down and get into the alpha creative state.  2. Do your meditation.  AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode:  Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Get The Keto Kickstart Guide for FREE To know more about Sean Croxton, visit his website here. Sleep deprivation is such a chronic condition these days that you might not even realize you suffer from it. Science has now established that a sleep deficit can have serious effects on your health.   For example, interrupted or impaired sleep can: Dramatically weaken your immune system Accelerate tumor growth—tumors grow two to three times faster in laboratory animals with severe sleep dysfunctions Cause a pre-diabetic state, making you feel hungry even if you’ve already eaten, which can wreak havoc on your weight Seriously impair your memory; even a single night of poor sleep—meaning sleeping only 4 to 6 hours—can impact your ability to think clearly the next day Impair your performance on physical or mental tasks, and decrease your problem solving ability 06:12 Most fat burning takes place during stage 4 sleep. This is when your 5 fat burning hormones become activated; thyroid T3, IGF-1, Testosterone, Growth Hormone, Glucagon. 07:50 My favorite sleep hack, money time sleep window. Fasting, Autophagy, mTor & Cancer | Reduce Your Cancer Risk by 95% – Ben Azadi: KKP 14

Fasting, Autophagy, mTor & Cancer | Reduce Your Cancer Risk by 95% – Ben Azadi: KKP 14

In this episode, we’ll talk all about autophagy. Here is an overview of this episode: The relationship between mTor & autophagy Which foods boost autophagy How to achieve autophagy via exercise Why bodybuilders die sooner than the average person Why you don't want too much autophagy Get my FREE Keto Kickstart Guide: www.ketokickstartguide.com  YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/ketokamp  My Favorite Keto Coffee: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com 03:55 The definition of autophagy is 'Self Eating'. We are made up of trillions of cells; every day, 70 billion cells need to be recycled. Powerful refrigerator analogy on autophagy.  05:28 How not achieving autophagy leads to cancer and disease. Dr. Thomas Seyfried, who wrote the book Cancer As A Metabolic Disease, is quoted as saying "If you were to complete a 7 day water only fast you would reduce your risk of cancer by 95%". 06:10 When the body is fasted, this is an acute hormedic to the body. The body will use damaged cells, proteins, and mitochondria first! Powerful analogy on a ship going through the Atlantic ocean taking on water and sinking. 07:20 The relationship between mTor & autophagy (feast/famine), and why they can both be good for us or bad for us. Its all about how you use it. There's an art to this. Think of mTor as growth (anabolic), and autophagy as catabolic.  09:30 The human body is designed for feast/famine cycles, and when you can master this, your DNA and cells will thrive. We have 97% control over the expression of our genes. This is called epigenetics. Check out the work by Dr. Bruce Lipton: https://www.brucelipton.com/ 11:07 In order to rebuild we must tear down first. I give a great analogy I heard from Dr. Jason Fung about old kitchen counters. Relate this analogy to the process of autophagy.  11:44 When does autophagy start during a fast? It depends on the person, it ranged from 12 hours to 24 hours. A general answer is that most people should be getting autophagy at the 16 hour fasting mark. 12:30 Dr. Thomas Seyfried saw cancerous tumors shrink before his eyes when his patients achieved maximum autophagy during a block fast. Here is how you test for max autophagy; take your blood glucose, divide by 18, and compare to your blood ketones. If you have a 1:1 ratio or higher, you are in max autophagy. 14:47 Achieve 3x the autophagy with a dry fast. This is extreme so work with a health practitioner.  15:15 Exercise increases autophagy. So do these specific ingredients. Add them to your daily diet; coffee, olive oil, coconuts, green tea, turmeric, ginger, sulforaphane (broccoli sprouts), mushrooms.
