Today, I am blessed to have here with me Joel Evan. Before Joel became a coach for empowering people and sharing ‘biohacks’ across the globe, he had his share of obstacles to overcome. From having an abnormal bone growth in his leg as a young child, to feeling lost and with no sense of purpose after high school and college, to starting a business twice and failing, and being $20k in debt, Joel’s story is the perfect example of how anybody can overcome the obstacles in their life and achieve greatness. Fast forward a few short years, and Joel was featured in the hit Netflix show, A User’s Guide to Cheating Death, and launched his podcast The Hacked Life. He is a high performance life coach, a health coach, and speaker. He’s also a Neufit practitioner that uses a machine called a Neubie which utilizes a direct current electrical stimulation to provide the body the right signals, so your body has the opportunity to heal itself from injury, build muscle, and create good health. Joel is also a martial artist and a black belt in Tony Ramos Kajukenbo and has been training in various martial arts for over 20 years. [00:30] What Inspired Joel To Get Into The Health Space One thing Joel noticed about himself is that he never thinks he is doing good enough. The lack of that self-worth issue also fuels Joel and drives him to get better and do more. After having his first son, Joel saw that his son was not flourishing – it didn’t make sense. Joel knew there had to be a better way to be healthy. Sadly, our current health system only looks at the effects instead of the cause. “There are so many people suffering that shouldn't be, and that just drives me nuts.” -Joel Evan [07:30] What Joel Would Tell Someone To Focus On Who Is Trying To Get Healthy Joel likes to help men with weight loss. However, when you help somebody with weight loss, there are so many other things going on with that person. A lot of times, Joel will help people emotionally and who they become as a person after their weight loss. After seeing Joel, people have a complete transformation. It's not necessarily about hitting the goal, but who we become along the way. [10:50] Joel Reveals The Best Ways To Create Healthy Habits The first step in any kind of habit is you need to have awareness. Next, make your habits tiny, easy, and achievable. The fastest way to get to a habit is you want to anchor it to something that you're already doing. For instance, brushing your teeth is a great anchor because you do that every single day. If you want to start reading more, then after you brush your teeth, open up the book and close the book. That’s all you have to do! Eventually, you’ll start reading a page every night. Down the road, that page will turn into a chapter every night. [14:10] How Your Beliefs Are Playing A Role In Your Health Creating a lifestyle will require a foundation. You should be able to tune back in and align yourself with core fundamentals and then get back and do what you got to do. People don't realize how much their beliefs play a role in their health and day-to-day life. As you go about your day, ask yourself why you do what you do. People don’t question you because they are aligned with you. During Covid, people believed that if they didn't wear a mask, they would get sick. Well, if you take on that belief, you probably will get sick. Once you balance the body, the body can go and do whatever it wants. [22:10] Why Joel Recommends Wearing A Continuous Glucose Monitor If you're someone who is really interested in losing weight, then a CGM is the best way to get clean data on what foods are doing to you. Food sensitivities can have issues on the downstream effects in your body, cortisol, and anything like that. Joel loves coffee. However, it was pretty frightening to see what a cold brew coffee did to his blood glucose. Joel even saw 180 from drinking cold brew on his CGM. So, Dr. Sloane got himself interested in urology. Later, Dr. Sloane wanted to promote more wellness. As a urologist, it was a perfect fit. Also, Dr. Sloane got himself interested in age management medicine, functional medicine, and peptides. [07:20] What Dr. Sloane Looks At When Treating Erectile Dysfunction First, Dr. Sloane checks free and total testosterone levels. However, the first test is not accurate. Nitric oxide is a key molecule for erections. When you hit 50, your levels of nitric oxide getting produced by the endothelial in your body decline drastically. Nitric oxide is a very important molecule in terms of just overall cardiovascular health, especially with erections. They joked that he was doing bizarre things in the living room. Their dad was experimenting and open to ways that affect his biology, health, and longevity. He would utilize vibration plates and infrared saunas way before they became popular. Eventually, they started paying attention to their own bodies and started to notice what biohacks work best with their bodies. “Now I'm 34, and I feel better now than I did when I was 24.” -Renee [10:15] Renee and Lauren Give Their Definitions of Biohacking The definition of biohacking changes all of the time. In fact, there's a lot of misconceptions about biohacking. However, biohacking is more for women than men because women are more complex. Biohacking is disrupting a pattern. It also is anything that helps you control your biology. Plus, biohacking can come from two different directions. You can biohack your way out of an illness, or you biohack your way into a thriving lifespan. Biohacking will optimize the aging process. [15:00] Why Stabilizing Blood Sugar Levels Is Important For Losing Weight We have stressors coming at us left and right, not just from food but from emotional stuff and environmental stuff. Renee and Lauren have both really gotten into the blood glucose testing because it is a huge variable that's overlooked. We are designed to be fat-burning machines and go extended periods of time without food. Just like you need exercise recovery, you need recovery from eating. Blood sugar is a sign that there's inflammation in the body. Nothing in the body will be in balance if there is inflammation. When we have too much glucose, we end up storing more fat that we end up burning. [17:20] All About Increasing Thermogenesis In The Body We rarely experience extreme temperatures. When we hit cold temperatures, it helps us to tap into the fat to actually burn. Shivering and cold plunges can increase your thermogenesis – your ability to burn fat to keep you warm. She started her career in nutrition by working in the ICU. Many people came into the ICU for lifestyle-related chronic conditions. For instance, people would be in the ICU due to an urgent amputation because of uncontrolled diabetes. At the ICU, Kara would see really severe problems that could have been prevented in the first place. So, Kara wanted to catch these issues way earlier in a way that was meaningful. After discovering CGMs, Kara realized how powerful of a tool they are for multiple reasons: They give us continuous insight into our metabolic health. CGMs are motivating for people. Lastly, the data you receive is personalized and actually works! [06:35] What You Need To Know Before Getting A CGM The CGM is a small device, about the size of a quarter. It’s a medical device, so you need a prescription in order to receive it from your doctor. Sadly, they're most likely not going to do it unless you're a diabetic case. If you're generally a healthy person who wants to stay healthy, the chances of your doctor writing you a prescription is slim to none. The device goes on the back of the arm, you push the button, and it’s in there. It uses a needle for insertion. The needle is removed, and the only thing that's left below the surface of your skin is a flexible microfilament. The devices are factory calibrated, so there's no blood needing to be drawn. [10:45] What Should Your Blood Glucose Levels Be? When you’re thinking about fasting glucose, Kara recommends 70 to 90 range milligrams per deciliter. If you Google, “what's a healthy fasting glucose level?” It will probably tell you 70 to 100. There is research that indicates when we get to that 90 to 100 range, we're starting to see some increased risks. Shoot for 70 – 90 most of the time. After a meal, we want to see it returned back to baseline values, usually in that two-hour mark. Check how high your levels went after you ate – aim for 140 or less. On a keto diet, it shouldn’t go above 120. [15:00] Insulin Mediated Glucose Responses And Non-Insulin Mediated Glucose Responses After Exercise Our glucose can spike, and our body can deal with that glucose spike without utilizing insulin. The spike we get from exercise happens after a very high-intensity workout, or you're doing something rather strenuous. It makes sense that you're going to have a glucose spike because your current supply of energy in the body is not enough to meet the demands that you're placing it under. With exercise, we're simulating stress hormones, but we're also breaking down glycogen stores. The exercise is demanding energy, and it's getting used right away. The reason your body is stimulating a glucose response with high-intensity exercise is that it needs it. [20:35] When You Are Chronically Sleep Deprived, You Will Have Higher Levels of Cortisol The Next Morning When we think about optimizing glucose values, we always talk about diet, exercise, stress, and sleep; they're equal components of the picture. Sleep is something we really have to pay attention to. Poor glucose levels will affect the quality of your sleep. Also, a bad night of sleep is definitely going to affect your glucose values the next day. [24:30] What Happens When You Break A Fast With A High Carbohydrate Meal There's a lot of psychology that goes on with fasting – people will have a cheat meal after fasting. When you do that, you ruin most of the benefits. If you break a fast with carbs, you can see glucose levels higher than they've ever been for two days straight. Eating carbs after a fast is not a good strategy. Instead, break a fast with protein. The longer the fast, the stricter you want to be. [26:40] Why You Should Go For A Walk After You Eat A Meal Walking after a meal can really dramatically stabilize glucose values. Most of our circulating glucose in the system is going to get picked up by the skeletal muscle. Gently stimulating your muscles and moving can make a really big difference. Walking is also good for mental health and stress reduction. [28:30] Other Biohacks You Can Do To Decrease Glucose Levels Cold and heat exposure work in different ways. Both will lower glucose over time. Cold therapy will stimulate brown fat. When you're hot and sweating a lot, that might cause the glucose to be elevated during the sauna session, but it should lower glucose values overall later in the day. The benefits we get from exercising can be duplicated when we also are doing sauna therapy. In addition, berberine is the most beneficial supplement for lowering glucose values. Plus, apple cider vinegar will help lower glucose values. Try a little bit of vinegar with water before a meal. You can also drizzle it on a salad. [33:30] The Dawn Phenomenon: What You Can Do About It You're going to potentially see a little bit of a glucose bump in the early morning hours. For most people, that occurs between about 4 to 8 am. It’s your body’s natural alarm clock. For some people, when they first wake up, glucose levels are highest in the day. There is no evidence to suggest that this glucose bump is a bad thing. She did not feel free to be herself or think the way she wanted to think and express that fully. At the moment, Dr. Jensen was crying and crying. Earlier in the day, Dr. Jensen’s mother had read her journal. Sadly, Dr. Jensen started to recognize that nothing was hers. Her mind, her body, and her thoughts were not hers. Jensen found a safety pin and carved “I hate life” into her arm. All of a sudden, something shifted; Dr. Jensen realized that she didn’t need to be a victim. If we don't fit into the tribe that we're moving into, it will be really hard to survive. The brain and the body are so smart that they're going to mold themselves to fit in. [12:30] The Reasons We Create Stories & How To Create Stories That Will Better Serve You There are different reasons why we create stories. We create a story in the womb to help us survive the environment we're going in. Stories are beautiful; they hold tradition and culture. Plus, stories can be amazing learning opportunities. Also, stories are influencing how we navigate our world, what we believe about ourselves, and the lens that we put on when we perceive the world around us. When we're trapped in the story that we've created to survive, we're not really connected to our own center and our own soul’s story. [16:25] The Tools That Dr. Jensen Loves To Use & How You Can Apply These Tools Today Yoga and meditation for Dr. Jensen was a lifesaver. Yoga doesn't have to be buying a yoga mat and doing a yoga class. Instead, yoga could be connecting with nature, it could be cooking a meal, and feeling completely connected with yourself. Physical yoga creates these movements in our body that we don't normally do. Plus, it creates this awakening and certain nerve endings and connections between organs and our breath. It starts to repattern our brain to think differently. Often, we're stuck in our mind, and we're operating from our mind. However, yoga can bring you back to your heart. [21:45] The Most Common Symptom That Women Deal With On A Daily Basis The most common symptom that Dr. Jensen treats is anxiety. There's usually an event that's created that anxiety, there is perception, there's a belief, and then that turns into deficiencies in our hormones. When a woman has anxiety, her gut system is also not working as well. Women need to understand where the anxiety is coming from and that it's not who she is. When we're thriving off of that stress, the anxieties show up, the gut issues show up, the inability to be very intimate shows up. [27:20] The Most Significant Lesson That Dr. Jensen Learned From Writing Her First Book The healing never stops. There is always another layer to your healing journey. Also, there is never one answer for all of us. Lastly, healing is a journey, and we don't have to get there right away. [06:30] What To Do If You Are Currently Taking A Sleep Medication There are so many elements that can certainly impact our sleep results. Environmental is one of the most significant changes that we can make. We need to learn about the management of our environment from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. You can train your circadian rhythm and strengthen it. When you train your circadian rhythm, you will be able to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Consistency is critical for overall sleep hygiene. [12:00] How Sleep Plays A Role In Your Weight Loss Journey If you’re not sleeping well, glucose levels are oscillating at a higher level. When we start having inconsistent timing of when we're eating, then that can throw off a confusing series of triggers to the body. Luckily, there is a buffer of about thirty minutes that you can sleep extra. If you sleep for too long after your normal wakeup time, you will be disrupting your circadian rhythm and disrupting your sleep for that following night and nights after. Train your circadian rhythm and keep it strong. [33:50] The General Optimal Timeframe To Get Deep Sleep And REM Sleep There's a variance between different people and different timing for their sleep. People who work the graveyard shift, unfortunately, may have long-term health problems. The World Health Organization sees staying up all night as a possible carcinogenic.
