Cynthia has been a nurse practitioner for 20+ years, and is a two-time TEDx speaker. She has been featured on ABC, FOX5, KTLA, CW and in Medium and Entrepreneur. She's also the host of Everyday Wellness podcast, which was listed as "20 Podcasts That Will Help You Grow in 2020" by Entrepreneur magazine. As an advocate for living a fulfilled, healthy and well- balanced lifestyle, Cynthia has committed her career to serving women in their thirties and beyond. She is countering the notion that "this is just how we age, now settle and accept it" and is leading the way for change. As part of that endeavor, Cynthia brings over 20 years of medical experience, combined with current and progressive nutritional perspectives/approaches to truly serve women frustrated with the status quo. Cynthia provides hope and customized programs that work. She selflessly and transparently shares her own personal experiences navigating hormonal imbalances, peri-menopause, and all of the symptoms that plague so many women. She authentically connects to her clients and tribe. Cynthia has been a guest on numerous podcasts including JJ Virgin's Reignite Wellness, Natalie Jill's Leveling Up, 365 Driven with Tony Whatley, Low Carb MD podcast with Drs. Tro and Lenzkes, and University of Adversity to name a few. Cynthia has been featured on Good Morning Washington, WJLA-ABC 14+ times, KTLA, Fox and speaks on intermittent fasting, hormonal health, fat loss, self-care, the power of whole food nutrition, carb cycling, adaptogenic herbs, digestive health and more. Plus, Cynthia reveals her favorite benefits of fasting and explains the importance of doing the inner work. Then, Cynthia worked with cardiology. When Cynthia became a parent, she found her child had eczema. This led Cynthia to learn more about nutrition. Cynthia recommends The Unhealthy Truth: One Mother's Shocking Investigation into the Dangers of America's Food Supply-- and What Every Family Can Do to Protect Itself. Cynthia started to think if she was happy with writing prescriptions. Truthfully, she wasn’t happy. When Cynthia started to study nutrition, she finally felt like she found her calling. Four years ago, Cynthia woke up and realized she was done with traditional medicine and gave her notice the same day. Cynthia wants to make a larger impact on her own terms. Frankly, she was tired of people telling her what to do. Now, she is doing exactly what she is supposed to do. [06:40] Why Cynthia Recommends Intermittent Fasting People have been conditioned to believe that they need to eat in the morning. However, our bodies are not designed to be eating all day long. When we are going against convention, we need the confidence to say BS. The cereal companies will benefit when they convince us that we need to eat breakfast garbage. Our bodies are designed to fast, feast, and fast again. Snacking is making us fat. [11:50] How To Stabilize Your Blood Sugar Each meal needs to have protein and healthy fats first. Carbs should be the non-processed variety. We have to stabilize our blood sugar first. Bacon, eggs, and avocado is a great example of fat-filled breakfast. If you are hungry within an hour of eating, your macros are off. Once you get your blood sugar stable, then you can move onto the concept of fasting. If you can’t sleep through the night, then you can’t lose weight. Also, if you are stressed, then you can’t lose weight. If a woman starts losing their period because of a fast, then the fast is too much for their body. [15:30] The Best Benefits of Fasting Mental clarity is Cynthia’s favorite benefit of fasting. She likes to know that she has loads of energy. The improved digestive process is Cynthia’s second favorite benefit. Lastly, the benefits of autophagy are fantastic. People are attracted to fasting because of weight loss; however, they find out that they feel so much better too. [17:20] Why We Need to Focus on Our Inner Work Inner work is what keeps us sane. We need to be aware of limiting beliefs, our negative thoughts, and where our energy is going. “Our thoughts become our actions.” -Cynthia Thurlow Mindset is the most important thing that we possess. [21:20] How to Build a Mental Six-Pack You need high-quality sleep in a cold, darkroom. Physical activity in the morning is critical. Cynthia enjoys drinking tea – it is beneficial for boosting autophagy. What are you going to do for your brain? Cynthia is always listening to a book or listening to a podcast. Coldwater therapy will also assist with your mental six-pack. [25:20] How to Build Confidence Building confidence requires being in tune with your passions. Take time each day to be inspired by other people. Creating a plan will help with your confidence. Cynthia says the best investments she has made in her business are the big-ticket ones. Sometimes you just have to leap. [29:45] How to Achieve Youthful-Looking Skin How to achieve youthful-looking skin: Autophagy Sleep Hydration Eating healthy Less feeding More fasting Be around people that make you feel joyful and happy Find something that you enjoy doing AND MUCH MORE! Shocking Benefits of Coffee, Tips on Buying Coffee, Coffee & Diabetes - Andrew Salisbury of Purity Coffee: KKP 27

Who doesn’t love a good cup of coffee? Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. Aside from its taste, people love it because of its high levels of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients. According to studies, 63% of American consume coffee daily. I, myself, am included in that.   Today’s episode is all about coffee. I am joined by Andrew Salisbury, co-founder of Purity Coffee. Andrew Salisbury was inspired to start Purity Coffee® after learning the truth about coffee and its positive impact on overall health and wellness. At Purity, their goal is to present the original scientific research that clearly proves that coffee is beneficial to human health and give people a new reason to drink coffee. In this episode, he shares and discusses some of that.   Coffee’s health benefits have been extensively researched and generally agreed upon. Using the words of Andrew, “Coffee is good for you. But, it can be made better.” Purity Coffee is an organic certified, specialty grade, high in antioxidants and free of contaminants coffee. Listen and learn about the benefits of coffee and the dangers of the wrong type of coffee. Andrew also shares tips on buying the perfect coffee! Sit tight, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy this episode!   Learn more about Purity Coffee here.   Get your bag of Purity coffee beans here: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com   In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:25] Andrew’s journey to the coffee industry Andrew’s background has nothing to do with coffee. His interest in coffee started to rise about 4 years ago when his wife was having some health issues, yet she doesn’t want to give up coffee. He was introduced to the professors of Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies where he found out that the benefits of coffee according to researchers and scientists are very different from what the general public know about it. They introduced Andrew to one of the top coffee scientists in the world, Adriana Franca from University of Brazil. Challenges on building a coffee company: Finding the right coffee beans, source and process. Reasons not to turn it into a business were more abundant than the other way around. Achieving high number of chlorogenic acids comparable to the top coffee brands in US   [6:00] Coffee and Health: What’s in your coffee? Drinking coffee is one of the healthiest things you can do to protect yourself against major diseases, increase physical performance, enhance brain function and contribute to longevity. People don’t buy coffee based on health. Thus, coffee producers don’t keep in mind health in their production. The big drivers of coffee today are: Cost Convenience Taste Coffee is the most heavily treated plant (pesticides) on the planet, next to tobacco. Coffee beans are sold by weight. Farmers spray their beans with water to make it heavier. Higher moisture content encourage growth of molds and mycotoxins. Dark roasted coffee beans are the most flavorful but has the least amount of antioxidants. As one of the well-researched topics on the planet, there are about 19,000 studies done on coffee and health. Yet, the vast majority of these findings have yet to reach the general public Coffee’s health benefits have been extensively researched and generally agreed upon. Coffee is good for you. But, it can be made better.   [10:48] Tips on how to buy coffee Ask for a specialty grade organic coffee. Look for medium roast coffee (city or full city). Under roasted coffee have higher levels of acrylamide. Over roasted coffee have burnt compounds and lower levels of antioxidants. Make sure that the coffee fresh. Antioxidants drop off dramatically after 20 days of roasting.   [13:28] Beyond Organic: Purity Coffee The Purity Process: aims to improve people’s health through coffee At Purity Coffee, they only use handpicked coffee. Large scale coffee producers do not handpick coffee beans. This method is very prone to spreading of molds and mycotoxins. Poor production practices can compromise the health attributes of coffee at nearly every step in the process. Purity Coffee test for molds, mycotoxins and pesticide residue. TA defined roasting protocol is practiced at Purity Coffee. For every harvest, they roast coffee on a condition that produces the highest level of antioxidants. Purity Coffee is always fresh.               [18:53] Coffee and Diabetes Statistics: 25 million Americans have diabetes. 81 million Americans are prediabetic. Drinking coffee prevents liver diseases and type II diabetes. Coffee is the number 1 source of antioxidants. According to studies, if you drink between 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day, your risk of developing Type II Diabetes is reduced by 45%.     [24:48] Surprising benefits of coffee Coffee helps in gout, heart disease, and tooth decay. Coffee is beneficial for people with HIV, in terms of longevity. If you have BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic mutations, coffee has a real big benefit. Drinking coffee is one of the healthiest things you can do to protect yourself against major diseases, increase physical performance, enhance brain function and contribute to longevity.     [27:00] Misconceptions about coffee Coffee is acidic. Stomach problems related to drinking coffee happens with low quality coffee, not acidity. Stale coffee have oils and lipids that are rancid. Tea has greater health benefits than coffee. Coffee has seven times antioxidants of that of green tea.     WHERE PURITY COFFEE HEADS TO AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Purity Organic Coffee - A Health Conscious Coffee Company Learn more about Purity Coffee: The Purity Standard Purity Coffee: An investment in your health The Purity Process Independent Laboratory Tests Vanderbilt University Institute for Coffee Studies Relevant Articles: Why Coffee Is Good For Your Health: Dr. Sanjiv Chopra Explains Coffee & Health Coffee & You   Get your bag of Purity coffee beans here: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com     This podcast is for information purposes only. Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Dr. Jason Fung - Diabetes, Obesity, Intermittent Fasting, & The Calories Debacle – KKP 24

Today’s episode is very close to my heart as I have a personal experience with diabetes. My father developed Type II Diabetes and I have watched him struggle with this disease. It was a very difficult time of my life. Ever since he passed away five years ago, I set out and study diabetes and why my fathers doctors’ advice did not work.   I came across the book The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss by Dr. Jason Fung where he explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good. The information that I now know would’ve saved my father’s life. Which is why I fully support Dr. Jason Fung’s, today’s guest, on his mission to spread as much information on diabetes and intermittent fasting to help as many people as possible.   Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist. He’s a world-leading expert on intermittent fasting and low carb, especially for treating people with type 2 diabetes. He has written three best-selling health books and he co-founded the Intensive Dietary Management Program.   Dr. Fung works with Team Diet Doctor where they make it simple for people to understand and implement intermittent fasting, to improve their health.   In this episode, we break down every single thing you need to know about calories, obesity, diabetes and intermittent fasting. Sit tight and enjoy!   This episode is sponsored by the world's healthiest coffee beans, Purity coffee. Get your beans delivered to your door: http://www.ketokampcoffee.com     In this episode, you'll discover:   [00:17] How Dr. Fung got into the health space, particularly nephrology As a Math and Science person, Dr. Fung initially thought he would pursue the field of engineering. He then decided that being a physician was more fitted to his style. After years in the university, he figured that he was also invested in doing research. As a physician, he can help people and do some research at the same time. In choosing a specialty, Dr. Fung felt that Nephrology suited his personality better. Nephrology is a complex specialty which is sort of a thinking-person speciality unlike cardiology which is more of an action specialty (i.e surgery)   [4:13] Diabetes, Obesity and Intermittent Fasting The most common and important cause of kidney disease is Type II Diabetes which is closely related to weight gain and obesity. Treating kidney diseases with medications is the least effective way to treat people. You have to look at the root cause of the disease in order to be successful in treating it. Which is why, for Dr. Fung, the real question was “what causes weight gain?” Nutrition is not considered part of the medical specialty which explains why doctors depend on medications to treat certain illnesses. Second question: What are you gonna do about it? Obesity was not existent during the 1970s. Now, 70% of Americans are obese. Intermittent Fasting: People suffering with Type II Diabetes for 20+ years immediately felt better by intermittent fasting. Fasting is less fun that eating pizza and doughnuts. Fasting is tough work. It is important to give people undergoing intermittent fasting the support and education they need.   [12:30] The Calorie Debacle Coca-Cola created a group called the Global Energy Balance Network to keep people focused on calories. They wanted people to think that 100 calories of broccoli is equivalent to 100 calories of Coca-Cola which is completely wrong. If you think that if you can eat cookies, drink coke and exercise then, you’ll be healthy, you are wrong. But, Coca-Cola wants you to think that this is right. Hormones control hunger, telling our body when to eat and when to stop. Different calorie sources elicit different hormonal responses. Diet and exercise are totally different things. Diet is what you eat. It affects the liver mostly. Exercise is mostly about skeletal muscles. Calorie is not a physiologic term. There’s no calorie-receptors in our body. We think that excessive intake of calories causes obesity. We think that this is a caloric imbalance. Too many ‘calories in’ compared to too few ‘calories out’ leads to weight gain. This Calorie Balance model of obesity has been drilled into us since childhood. Read more about the Calorie Debacle here.     [18:40] Intermittent Fasting as a reasonable alternative to treat patients Ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting are not as famous as low-carb diet. Jason Fung received a lot of backlash when he started to introduce intermittent fasting to his patients. Because of IF, patients were getting better. At the end of the day, you can’t ignore that. Other doctors started to notice the success of IF. Through his book, The Obesity Code: Unlocking the Secrets of Weight Loss, Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good.   [25:55] Why the common treatments for type 2 diabetes seem to make things worse Type II Diabetes is a reversible disease. The standard treatment of Type II diabetes focused on getting the sugar down by medications. Doctors should’ve focused on the patient’s diet to help them lose weight because if you lose weight, your diabetes gets better. Jason Fung forever changed the way we think about obesity and he wanted to do the same for type 2 diabetes through his book The Diabetes Code: Prevent and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Naturally He explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease. People cannot just make a decision to burn more fat calories, or to feel less hungry. These are physiological issues and must be addressed via physiology.   [31:49] Dr. Fung’s Intensive Dietary Management (IDM) program The IDM program helps people reach their health goals through intermittent fasting and simple-to-follow time-restricted eating strategies. It’s a structured digital lifestyle intervention developed by Megan Ramos and Dr. Jason Fung that provides you with all the education and support you need to succeed. At least several thousands of people have gone through the Intensive Dietary Management program and the number keeps adding up.   For 2019 years, people have already been talking about fasting and they don’t talk about it as a terrible thing. Fung clarifies that he didn’t invent intermittent fasting. He just started talking about it because it seems logical to him.   [37:14] Guinness World Record on the Longest Recorded Fast In the 1971 edition of The Guinness Book of Records, Barbieri's 382-day fast was recognized as the longest recorded. The most important thing is that people feel well throughout their entire fasting. For 365 days a year, 3 meals a day, you are taking a total of 1000 meals per year. If you do a 7-day fast, you’re going to miss 21 of that 1000. How is that a big deal?   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle Visit the official YouTube channel of Dr. Jason Fung To know more about Intermittent Fasting, click here Are you interested in keto or low carb? Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Grass Fed vs Grain Fed, Folate vs Folic Acid, Food, Anxiety & Depression, – Autumn Smith KKP 21

Today’s episode is a story about pain and struggles and how these experiences help develop passion and purpose. Autumn Smith, joins us today to share her own wellness journey of healing from IBS and her mission to inspire people to take care of themselves. She gives tips on diet and nutrition, exercise, drugs/medicines, and routine for greater physical and mental health, including the importance of consistently testing your blood sugar levels. You don’t want to miss this one!   Autumn suffered acute digestive issues since she was a teenager and numerous experts failed to offer solutions that worked. Very concerned, her husband, Chas took matters into his own hands. His extensive research led him to the paleo diet.   Together they implemented its principles for 30 days and by the end, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved. With this wonderful learning experience, Autumn focused on disseminating information to facilitate wellness for everyone. She achieves this through Paleovalley and Wild Pastures.   Paleovalley creates products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health. Their products are a labor of love, and their only hope is that they help your family feel as vibrant as theirs. I, myself, testify to that.   If you want to know more about their products and try them for yourself, visit their store here. They jumped from doctor to doctor and nobody really gave her a ‘healing’ answer. Autumn managed her pain on her own and she now knows that there’s a profound gut and brain connection. With Autumn’s decision to manage it instead of address it, her mental health started to deteriorate. It was so bad that Autumn was kicked out of her parents’ house before she even graduated from high school. This experience helped her develop the level responsibility she has today. From rock bottom, she pulled it together, got to college, moved to LA, pursued a dance career where she worked for Tracy Anderson, a celebrity fitness trainer. Her husband noticed that she is still suffering a lot that they decided to visit one last doctor. Still, no ‘healing’ answer was given. Through their self-guided research, she and her husband healed her digestive issues with the paleo diet. Within 30 days of the paleo diet, her digestive issues completely went away. Through Paleovalley, Autumn’s purpose is to facilitate wellness for everyone else by disseminating excellent nutritional information and organic food products with 100 million people worldwide   [5:50] Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Feeling bloated after meals. Experiencing pain and cramps in the lower abdomen. Getting itchy skin rashes or blisters. Deteriorating mental health. Unstable blood sugar levels.   [6:40] There is no cookie-cutter approach on regulating your blood sugar levels. Keto diet has been shown to improve blood sugar control. Regulating your blood sugar level is similar to a fingerprint. It is very unique. Number 1 step: Test your blood sugar levels. It is important to test. You cannot get all the information you need from the glycemic index and glycemic load. Fifty (50%) of people today are insulin resistant → highly correlated with the number of people with mental health issues.     [9:33] Mental Health, Drugs and Nutrition. Anti-anxiety drugs increase the risk of addiction in just 4 days. The pharmaceutical industry taught us the depression is just a case of serotonin-deficiency. Dietary intervention for people with mental health issues: Stabilize your blood sugar level. Address nutrient-deficiency. Track nutrition & count calories. (e.g Cronometer) Most mental health issues today are rooted with the immune system inflammation. Make sure you are not eating inflammatory foods. Identify your food sensitivities and gut issues.   [15:58] Foods, Anxiety and Depression Foods that trigger anxiety and depression: Sugar Gluten Back in the 1950s, there’s an association with gluten and schizophrenia Dairy Gluten and dairy breakdown into exorphins. These chemicals make you feel good in the moment but a little while after, they take you down and make you feel terrible. Caffeine Foods that reduce anxiety and depression: Seafoods (B12 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids) Organ Meats Vitamin A Folate Riboflavin Vegetables For a full list of foods with purported mental-health benefits, check out the study Antidepressant foods: An evidence-based nutrient profiling system for depression   [23:20] Story behind Paleovalley To heal her digestive issues, Autumn eliminated refined foods, shopped at local farmers’ market, ate fresh organic fruits and vegetables, grass fed meats and wild seafood. By the end of a 30-day period, Autumn's IBS was completely resolved Autumn and her husband, Chas, originally focused on disseminating information. They soon realized that there simply weren’t many truly healthy food products on the market. Realizing that they had an important job to do, they launched Paleovalley which aims to create products with integrity that are free from problematic ingredients and teeming with ingredients that promote vibrant health.   [27:35] Folate vs. Folic Acid Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9. Research suggests that your body won’t use it as efficiently as folate. Folate is the food form of vitamin B9. People with MTHFR, a genetic mutation 50% of the population has, won't be able to use these fake B Vitamins which interferes with the metabolism of the real ones.   [30:00] Differentiating grass fed animals from the others Grass fed animals are fed with grass and grains. They are free to roam around in their pasture. They are not exposed to pesticides. Products of grass fed animals have higher nutrient levels, better fatty acid profile, higher antioxidant levels and higher mineral content. Grass fed farmers can use a number of different grazing styles. Continuous grazing Animals graze a pasture for an extended amount of time with no, or infrequent rest to the plants from grazing. Not ideal since it degrades the environment Rotational grazing Mimic nature A system where a large pasture is divided into smaller paddocks allowing livestock to be easily moved from one paddock to another Stimulates rapid grass growth   [38:18] Autumn’s decision of not being in retail stores Paleovalley’s goal is to produce affordable products for consumers. “If we don’t go to retail, we don’t pay the extra costs associated with going into retail.” This allows them to keep their integrity high. “Our ultimate goal is to make it accessible. Retail, sometimes, does the opposite.”   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode: Email me at ben@ketokamp.com Join the The Keto Kamp Inner Circle To know more about Autumn Smith and Paleovalley, click here Wild Pastures - From Pasture-Centric Farms To Your Table Connect with Autumn: autumn@paleovalley.com Check out Paleovalley’s products.
