We know what causes other diseases or infections. Cancer is the second cause of death in America, yet we don’t know what it is. The way we think about cancer has changed significantly throughout the years. There is an enormous shift in how we see the disease, affecting how we treat the disease. There is a recognition that cancer is actually an obesity-related disease. In 2003, there was convincing evidence about the correlation between cancer and obesity. In fact, it’s a massive part of cancer. Diet turns out to be 30-35% related to cancer causation. Breast cancer and colorectal cancer are the most prominent obesity-related cancers. “Diseases of metabolism are also diseases of growth.” -Dr. Jason Fung [16:15] Every Cancer Develops From Your Own Cells The number of mutations that are required to get cancer far outstrips the rate of mutation. Why does every cancer look exactly the same? People will have identical cancers that develop independently of each other. Cancer is an evolutionary disease. You can take the tools of evolutionary biology and apply them to cancer instead. All the different mutations are not random because they all end up in the same place. It’s not a random chance mutation; it’s a guided mutation. Cancer is not part of your body; it’s foreign. The immune system will attack cancer cells. [25:00] A Seven-Day Water Fast Could Shrink Tumors The research on water fasts is preliminary. A water fast will maximize autophagy. It will put your cells into maintenance mode. When you fast, your insulin will lower as well as your mTOR. Cancer is a tough thing to study because you cannot use preventative treatments once it gets past a certain point. If you want to study prevention, then you need lots of people. [29:00] The Correlation Between Glucose and Cancer Cancer runs on glucose much better than they run on fat. If a cell is trying to grow, then it needs fuel. Some cancer cells can run on protein and fat. Glucose is the most readily available fuel, and it makes the cell run efficiently. If you starve the cell of glucose, then it can change. Before you develop cancer, nutrition can be enough to prevent it. [38:35] How Bad Fats Could Increase Our Chances of Cancer Bad fats could possibly increase our chances of cancer. However, the data isn’t there yet. Anything that increases inflammation is going to create a risk of cancer. Cancer develops from inflammation and chronic damage. Anything that causes chronic damage to the body puts pressure on the body to be in survival mode. [42:50] The Benefits of Metformin If you have type 2 diabetes, then metformin may be better for cancer prevention. Metformin will turn down excessive growth. If you are in growth mode all the time, it’s bad for longevity. You want your metabolic rate to be lower by eating less. [45:30] Getting Too Much Autophagy Too much autophagy is bad and too little autophagy is bad. You want to be somewhere in the middle. You want to maintain a middle ground of autophagy for the most part. When you eat too much, you’ll turn off autophagy. [47:40] How Fasting Can Improve Chemotherapy Chemotherapy will kill cancer cells. Fasting will turn down normal cell growth. Therefore, they will be less susceptible to chemotherapy. Cancer cells cannot turn themselves down as easily. Fasting is safe during chemotherapy. Plus, it is shown that you can handle the chemotherapy better when fasting. AND MUCH MORE! EMFs are invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation. You cannot block the magnetic field of penetration from EMFs to our bodies. Studies show that EMFs will increase the risks of brain cancer and other cancers as well. Even though there is some controversy on the studies, Dr. Kedar personally believes that EMF radiation will increase the risk of cancer. Also, EMF radiation can induce diabetes-like symptoms. There are loads of effects that no one can deny from EMF radiation. EMFs are found in wi-fi signals and our cell phones. [10:10] Differences between EMF Radiation Based On Generation Recent generations will have more acute damage from EMF radiation. Even low exposure to EMF from mobile phones may cause health problems. There are many aspects of health that are affected by EMF radiation. For instance, it can cause damage to biological tissues by inducing changes. Shielding EMF radiation has no value in Dr. Kedar’s opinion. In fact, it can be counterproductive. Instead, focus on how you can protect your body from the inside. [18:55] EMF Radiation Can Reduce Capacity of DNA Repair If you are exposed to EMF radiation, then you generate lots of free radicals. Antioxidant enzymes are reduced with EMF radiation. It’s important to include collagen via organ meats, supplements, and bone broth. Methionine is commonly found in muscle meat. Glycine is found in connective tissue and organ meat. Methionine is a carrier of methyl groups, when you have too much methionine it uses up your bodies glycine to buffer up the methyl groups. This will mess up your biochemistry. Glycine balances methionine and helps the amino acid ratio. Toxins the body cannot eliminate are likely to accumulate in the body’s fatty tissues and nervous systems. On the other hand, the liver is a is a storage organ for many important nutrients (vitamins A, D, E, K, B12 and folic acid, and minerals such as copper and iron). These nutrients provide the body with some of the tools it needs to get rid of toxins. Ben Carnivore Lab Work Notes: BUN went up moving more protein through my kidneys Blood Urea Nitrogen and Creatinine these are byproducts of different functions in the body BUN/CREATININE ratio went up Albumin protein went up AST ALT went down Ferritin went up but this can be an issue if there’s oxidized fats in the body. It’s important to look at other oxidative stress markers. C-Reactive protein went down more than 50% (inflammation in the blood vessels) Homocysteine dropped vascular and brain inflammation Cholesterol and LDL’s went up. The body is clearing the system with cholesterols, cholesterol is a band aid, a healer. This shows up with inflammatory markers coming down. Cholesterol makes hormones, cells, and gives the cell membrane what it wants. Inflammation markers all dropped but all particles went up. The oxidative component rules. I’m using cholesterol as an energy source therefore I have more particles that are shuttling more cholesterol. Cholesterol becomes a major fuel source, makes sense. [14:30] Making The Pivot To Functional Medicine It was an easy decision for Dr. Casey to pivot to functional medicine. Casey’s purpose is to help the most people that she possibly can. Ultimately, Dr. Casey realized she could merge her functional medicine insight into digital tools and potentially help millions. [19:25] About Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) tracks glucose levels throughout the day and night and can alert you if your levels go too high or low. This technology has been around for over a decade. Insulin resistance and metabolic diseases start decades before the actual diagnosis and result from repeated and regular insults to your metabolic system. No two people respond to carbs the same; that’s why a CGM is useful. [31:05] The Effects of Cortisol On Glucose Our perception of stress effects our glucose levels. Stress will raise your glucose. It’s good to be aware of your stress levels throughout the day. It’s difficult to know whether or not we are stressed. You cannot hide the stress from your body even if your brain doesn’t think you are stressed. If you’re getting a glucose surge, then try to add a meditation practice to your day. [34:25] About The Dawn Phenomenon First thing in the morning, glucose will rise on its own. In order to wake up from sleep, our body will release cortisol and other hormones. These hormones will have an impact on our bodies. This effect is more pronounced in someone who has diabetes. Evidence suggests that a very healthy person will not have much of a dawn effect. In someone who has perfect insulin sensitivity, then the body will compensate for the glucose surge. It’s normal not to see a dawn effect. [36:10] Optimal Glucose Ranges If you have a fasting glucose of below 100, you’re considered normal. If you are 100 – 125, you are considered prediabetic. If you are 126 and above, you are considered diabetic. If you’re below 100 in the morning, then you’re okay. After a considerable carb-rich meal and you stay below 140, then you’re fine. However, Dr. Casey says these numbers are way too lenient. If you look at the research, even in the “normal” range risk of all diseases increases above 70. Some research suggests that the lower your fasting glucose is, the risk for mortality goes up. This does not entirely convince dr. Casey. Low fasting glucose needs to be studied better. [46:25] Getting Your Own CGM For an average person, their doctor will not give them a CGM. When you become a Level customer, you will get an evaluation from a doctor to use a CGM.
