Shana Hussin | Fast To Heal: A 5-Step Guide to Achieving Nutritional PEACE and Reversing Insulin Resistance KKP: 380

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Shana Hussin. She grew up in Wisconsin, and earned her dietetics degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1999. While very active throughout her entire lifetime, she struggled with weight gain in college, despite following conventional nutrition recommendations and exercising extensively. It took many years to figure out why she was so much bigger then, but the truth revealed itself when Shana discovered hormonal connections between weight gain, and eventually growing sick and fat. Shana has worked in the medical nutrition therapy field for 20 years. Like most dietitians, she recommended strategies to her clients for much of her career that failed them long-term, with little sustainable weight loss. This proved to be frustrating to both practitioner and client. Armed with new knowledge, an open mind, and simple healing concepts, she developed a 5- Step lifestyle improvement program for her clients, resulting in immediate and sustained success. Determined to share correct and effective concepts with as many as she could reach, she started writing. Shana now serves those wanting to learn her teachings with books, digital products, personalized virtual visits, group coaching, Facebook support groups, the Fast To Heal Stories podcast, and her popular 28-Day Finding Nutritional PEACE Group Challenges, which run every season. [00:45] The Story Behind Shana’s Son and His Ulcerative Colitis Diagnosis One day, Shana’s son got diarrhea; they didn’t think much of it. After weeks, he still had diarrhea. So, they went and got testing, but nothing was coming back. Three months after he started having symptoms, he had a colonoscopy done, and he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He had lost a bunch of weight and couldn’t keep up with sports at the age of eleven. Later, the doctor said Shana needed to get ready to take his colon out. However, Shana found experts outside of the conventional medicine that helped heal her son. [13:30] Why Shana Started To Question Her Dietician Training Shana was a dietician for ten years before she started questioning things. She told people to eat low fat, mostly plants and whole grains. Ten years in, Shana’s clients weren’t getting any better. After having three children, Shana started to develop her own health problems. Shana had four or five canker sores in her mouth, bloating, and a lack of energy. She knew something in her diet had to be the problem. It took a long time to figure out what was wrong. Shana started fasting, dialing back carbs, and increasing fats. After a few months, Shana was sleeping better, her bloating went away, and her canker sores vanished. Prepare your body for fasting. Get the junk out of your system as much as possible. Eat more whole foods and get your carbohydrates down so your body can adapt to ketones. E stands for Extend Your Fast. Stop eating after dinner. Figure out your trigger and remove it. Start pushing your first meal back in the morning. If you like eating in the morning, close your window sooner at night. A stands for Alter Nutrition As Needed. Women always need to increase their protein. When you’re not eating protein and natural fats, then you’re going to be ill and hungry. Also, it’s time to ditch the seed oils. C stands for Clean, Challenge, and Change Make sure that your fast is clean and you’re not stimulating insulin. Challenge days work well for people who have been sick for a long time; pick one day where you will do a twenty-four-hour fast. If you have severe insulin resistance, extended fasts can help you heal. E stands for Ease Your Mind. If you don’t sleep and have stress, then your hormones will be out of whack.
