Ditching the Complicated Diets Practicing Self-Love and Discovering Your Superpower Controlling Your Appetite and Cravings During Fasting Raise your hand if you’ve craved something sweet while fasting…we’ve all been there. In this episode, Ben and I discussed a few reasons behind these cravings and how to overcome them. Ben suggests that the cravings could be due to not being fat-adapted yet. Our brains may panic when glucose drops in a fasted state because the ketones are not present. It sends signals to our body to get some carbs that fulfill that desire. I recommend using fasting to pulse into a ketogenic state and then pulse out. What this means is that each time you go into your ketogenic state, it’s healing something. If you get into that space, and suddenly your cravings go up, hang in there as long as you can and then dip back into food. And each time you go back, it gets easier and easier, just like going to the gym. It’s important to note that every fast has its benefits, so if you did reach for that snack, there’s no such thing as a failed fast. When you put yourself in a healing state, you can’t fail. Understanding the type of craving you’re having, whether it’s a sugar craving, an adrenal issue, or a thyroid issue – you can support your body by adding more good fat and protein, eating more calories, or doing more 24-hour fasts. Protein, Muscle, and Weight Loss If you’re looking to build muscle and lose weight, you might want to pay attention to how much protein you’re consuming. It’s recommended to consume between one to one and a half grams of protein per pound of body weight. But if you fall short of meeting this requirement, using essential amino acids can be beneficial in filling these gaps. As we age, particularly during menopause, our bodies start to break down muscle to get amino acids if the adrenal glands are overworked. To combat this, protein cycling may be the answer – this involves consuming 30 grams of protein several times a day, combined with a lot of amino acids, to maintain muscle mass. Consuming more than 90 grams of protein risks turning it into glucose, which could impede weight loss. It’s important to note that this applies to one meal, so consuming over 90 grams in a single setting is challenging for most people. Can Keto Be Simple? Ditching the Complicated Diets If you’re tired of trying all the complicated diets and grabbing every new supplement that comes along, here’s a solution: simplicity. In this episode, Ben and I discussed that often the natural healthcare system and biohacking world can be sometimes overcomplicated to the point where it’s as confusing as the conventional healthcare system. For instance, if you want to get into ketosis, the best way is to start fasting. You don’t have to count macros or purchase pre-packaged keto food. You can start simply by compressing your eating window and leaving long times for fasting to see if you can get into ketosis. Instead of counting macros, you can switch to nature’s carbs. To simplify your approach, start with small changes that you can easily incorporate into your routine, like a daily walk or simple breathing exercises. It’s important to not get bogged down in the details and to remember the ultimate goal of improving your health. Practicing Self-Love and Discovering Your Superpower This year, I’ve promised myself to practice more self-love when I can and encourage you to find the time to give back and nurture yourself too. Ben shared in this episode that the daily self-love practices that help him feel grateful for his health and well-being are keeping a gratitude journal on his nightstand to taking breaks throughout the day to relax and read. To implement these ideas into your own life, you can start by incorporating simple self-love practices into your daily routine. This can include writing down a list of things you’re grateful for each day, taking breaks to relax and do something you enjoy, or simply reminding yourself of the things you love about yourself. Gratitude has a profound way of helping shift your mindset and improve your overall well-being. This can involve writing down things you’re grateful for, expressing gratitude to those around you, or simply taking a moment to appreciate the good things in your life. Today, people experience metabolic disease and unhealthy insulin resistance at alarming rates. Since the fifties, conventional westernized food has become highly processed, hyper-palatable food full of ingredients our body doesn't know how to process. Seed oils and high fructose corn syrup are cheap and convenient for manufacturers, but they are highly damaging to our bodies, and we end up not getting the nutrients we need. Ultimately, excessive consumption of processed food leads to inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and metabolic disease. Poor Sleep and Movement Habits Create a Vicious Cycle of Stress In the past few years, modern Americans have experienced significant lifestyle changes in movement and sleep. To stay healthy, we need to move and leave our homes, but nowadays, it is possible to have everything delivered and become wholly isolated and sedentary. People stay up all night and sleep all day. They take drugs to help them wake up and also to help them sleep. This problem became more severe during the pandemic, and many Americans gained over 25 pounds. When people fail to manage their stress healthily, they only worsen things. Habits such as eating while standing and failing to connect with nature also perpetuate problems with sleep and energy levels. Waking when the sun rises, going to bed when it's dark out, and eating in alignment with circadian biology are the best practices to improve sleep and overall quality of life. Mapping Your Hormonal Cycle to Optimize Your Health Choices Women in their peak fertile years may be inclined to cruise along without paying attention to their cycle, but careful tracking is one of the best ways to optimize health. For example, keeping up with the progesterone-dominated segments of your cycle will help you understand when your body needs a break. Progesterone is like the sleepy mellow sister of estrogen, which may affect your workouts, energy, and cravings. About five to seven days before your menstrual cycle, you may need to watch your food intake better. Instead of pushing your body to do OrangeTheory or CrossFit six to seven days a week, this is a better time to focus on weight training, yoga, and pilates. Knowing when to rest and eat healthy foods during your cycle will reduce cravings, sleep problems, and other issues. Make Protein A Top Priority to Retain Muscles and Improve Insulin Sensitivity Besides avoiding highly processed foods, Thurlow recommends focusing on protein. Both men and women build the bulk of their lean muscle mass in their twenties and thirties. By forty, we begin to lose not only muscle mass but muscle strength as well. As we age, adipose tissue begins replacing our muscles, leading to insulin sensitivity. Protein helps to stimulate muscle protein synthesis, and hitting an adequate amount of protein is critically important for maintaining metabolic health. To maximize the effects of good nutrition, go for a ten to fifteen-minute walk after every meal because this will help your muscles absorb and retain glucose, which helps with insulin sensitivity. Recognizing and Adapting to Premenopausal Symptoms To conceptualize perimenopause, think of it as a sort of reverse puberty. When women first get their period, they usually do not menstruate regularly right away. Similarly, perimenopause may cause your cycle to become more irregular and, therefore, harder to track. Perimenopause occurs about ten to fifteen years before menopause, so between ages thirty-five and thirty-nine, women will begin to notice its effects. During this time, the ovaries do not produce as much progesterone. Our adrenal glands act as an emergency backup system for progesterone production, but perimenopause demands more from them, which can cause sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms. They biochemically are easily attacked by oxygen, and they become toxic. Foods cooked in seed oils, like french fries, have some of the same toxins you inhale when you inhale cigarette smoke. For instance, both french fries and cigarettes have the same amount of crotonaldehyde. However, it has been cultivated specifically for use as food. The cultivation of an oil seed makes it more oily. Olives have become more oily over time; the same goes for peanuts. You don’t need to treat peanuts with harsh chemicals to extract oil. Dr. Cate recommends unrefined peanut oil. There are a lot of antioxidants in there that stabilize the PUFAs during cooking. Peanut oil that is refined is okay because it’s better than seed oils; however, it doesn’t have much nutrition, and it’s not as heat stable. If Dr. Cate had to recommend one cooking method, it would be to cook your food in tallow. Vegetable Oils Are Worse Than Smoking Cigarettes The toxicity begins and ends with the beginning and end of your cigarette. Vegetable oils will end up in your body fat; this adds a whole other layer of metabolic impacts beyond the direct toxic effects. Vegetable oils are worse than sugar too. Sugar and high fructose corn syrup are full of empty calories. When you break down sugar, your body can’t tell where the molecules come from. Those empty calories will turn into normal body fat. Humans have carried normal body fat around for a long time. Sadly, many people walk around with 40% PUFAs in their body fat. How Can You Avoid Seed Oils While Eating Out?  Ask them to cook your food in natural butter, not butter oil. Ask them for real olive oil if they don’t have real butter. If they don’t have butter or olive oil, they can cook your food using a different method, like steaming. Then, it would help if you took out the carbs. You can get a taco salad at Taco Bell without the shell. The shell has loads of vegetable oils in them. When you go to Taco Bell for salad, you can top it with meat, cheese, and avocado. Ben will tell the waiter that he is allergic to vegetable oils so that the restaurant staff will take the request seriously. Questions and Answers How can we release the PUFAs from stored fats in our bodies?  The more you burn your body fat, the more it will happen.  Fasting will accelerate the process. Stop snacking between meals and eat foods that give you sustainable energy. What about essential oils?  Traditional nuts and fruits have good fatty acid profiles.  Essential oils won’t get absorbed through the bloodstream if you use them on your skin. They have a lot of double bonds, and they’re very unstable. DHA and EPA are even more unsaturated than vegetables. [04:50] What Happens When Vegetable Oil Enters The Cell Wall of Your 38 Trillion Cells?  Lipoprotein particle has one or two proteins that carry the oil, travels through the bloodstream, and eventually ends up under trillions of cells.  About 80% of the cell wall is fat, a rudimentary and primitive way of understanding aging.  Greater than 90% of all the antioxidants on the cell wall are vitamin E molecules, tocotrienol. Less than 10% of them are Co-Q 10, which your body makes, Lycopene and Beta-keratin.  Four Major Food Groups are Fat, Protein, Carbohydrate, and Nucleic Acid. [12:27] Watch Out! Keep Your Body Healthy From Fats and Cholesterol Vast amounts of fatty acid are not healthy for the body. The cholesterol is made by our body and is in the cell to give flexibility to the cell, so it is not too rigid or stiff. One in every 10,000 oxygen becomes radicalized. It had two very active electrons under oxygen, with a high potential energy. She suffered from chronic constipation and chronic pains with food. So, Austin tried a paleo diet and cut out diary. Eventually, Austin noticed that when she cut out certain vegetables, her digestion was getting better. Then, she realized more fats would make her feel better. It wasn’t until Austin went carnivore and cut out fiber that made her digestive issues go away. [06:30] Antinutrients Could Be The Reason For Your Symptoms Joint pain is a big issue. Antinutrients can also cause chronic constipation. Also, antinutrients can be hindering your mental clarity and sleep. Lastly, antinutrients may be causing low energy levels. Switching to carnivore can vastly improve mental clarity, sleep, energy, digestion, and joint pain. [08:35] Why You May Want To Ditch The Antinutrients Take away antinutrients to see if your health improves. Antinutrients will affect every person differently. The gut will be most affected by antinutrients. In fact, they can even cause leaky gut. First, you have to clean the gut before you introduce probiotics. If you add probiotics to an unhealthy gut, then it’s not going to help. Remove the antinutrients in order to heal the gut temporarily. [14:15] Do You Need Fiber To Have Regular Bowel Movements? People think that going on a carnivore diet will result in constipation. Other people say that the carnivore diet will result in explosive diarrhea. When switching to carnivore, the increased amount of fat could result in diarrhea. So, go heavy on protein instead of fat. Liquid fats will run right through you. [16:30] Why You Shouldn’t Drink Water When You Are Eating Your Meals When you are eating a carnivore diet, you already have a lot of protein which requires stomach acid to break it down. To maximize stomach acid, prevent water 30 minutes before and after a meal. It takes our body more effort to digest cold water. Instead, drink room temperature water. When eating, it is best not to just stress the body and make sure that you can focus on the digestion of food. [17:45] Electrolytes Are Critical When Following A Carnivore Diet Austin is a minimalist when it comes to supplements. If you are going to eat organs, then eat the actual organs. Supplements are processed, so it’s time to eliminate those from your diet when possible. If you are starting a carnivore diet, then you need more electrolytes. The beef heart is very mild. Another organ that is easy on flavor is the beef tongue. Slow cooking the beef tongue will make it easy to consume. [26:45] Can I Get Cancer From Eating Too Much Red Meat? Keto and carnivore have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. The red meat studies were not accurate – they were not looking at just the consumption of red meat. Everything comes down to inflammation. When you reduce antinutrients, you are reducing inflammation. By doing these things, you are actually reversing your chances of getting cancer. The number one cancer center in the United States is promoting a ketogenic diet. [32:50] How To Transition From Carnivore To Keto Depending on what foods trigger your symptoms will depend on how you want to transition from carnivore to keto. For instance, if sweet things trigger your symptoms, then you may want to avoid fruits. However, if sweet foods are not your trigger, then you can start to reintroduce berries back into your diet. Avocado is a safe food to bring back into your diet. Also, some people even cut out eggs when they go on a carnivore diet. Melanie started trying the Paleo diet after she read Robb Wolf’s The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet. [11:05] Getting Heavy Metal Poisoning from Fish People don’t realize and tend to underestimate how much mercury there is in the fish you eat. Melanie thinks that swordfish should be made illegal to be sold in restaurants due to the amount of mercury you can contract from it. Eat fish in moderation to avoid heavy metal poisoning. You can get mercury poisoning not only from fish but from silver tooth fillings as well. Symptoms of this poisoning include fatigue, anemia, memory loss, anxiety, hot flashes, and insomnia. [25:25] What Happens When Toxins Get into the Body? Our bodies can detoxify on their own; however, we are not accustomed to the overwhelming toxic burden that we have nowadays. Every day toxins such as heavy metals in the food we eat, pesticides, skincare products, and makeup aren’t regulated, which is why we consume more than we should. An abundance of certain compounds in makeup can cause you to gain weight and make it hard to lose it. Not to mention carcinogens. The solution to pollution is dilution. There are also studies about obesogens that states that they may affect insulin levels as well. [39:05] The Most Common Themes in Interviews Most people are all about bio-individuality: different diets and things work for different people. Most of them seem to be focused on fasting as well, which is quite popular at the moment.  Blood sugar control is a common theme since many people have a lot of trouble dealing with it. There is no cookie-cutter approach to anything. Different strokes work for different folks. A specific diet can’t work for literally everyone. Rachel decided to go to Baylor University for Nutrition Science and Dietetics. At college, Rachel started weightlifting, fitness competitions, and bodybuilding. She was known as someone who could maintain this incredible physique for so long. Fitness was an outlet for Rachel to escape her trauma. [04:20] Rachel Was Close To Getting Her Entire Large Intestine Cut Out Rachel suffered from a lot of chronic gut issues. She realized that bodybuilding wasn’t healthy; she was miserable on the inside. During her bodybuilding days, Rachel had hormonal imbalances, her thyroid took a massive hit, she was depressed, and she had anxiety. Rachel’s gut issues were severe – whenever Rachel ate, she had massive pain. The gastroenterologist wanted to cut out her large intestine. Something in Rachel’s gut told her not to do the surgery. Instead, she went down the road of functional medicine. [15:40] A Guide To Increasing Diversity In Your Gut Food is a great way to increase diversity in your gut. More diversity in our gut leads to more leanness, which can help improve our metabolism. The first thing you can do is feed the bacteria in the gut by increasing more fibers. Green bananas are a great way to increase diversity. Figure out a way to rotate some of the foods and fibers that you’re eating. “Food is going to be the number one source of fuel for a greater diversity in our gut.” -Rachel Scheer [23:45] The Worst Foods You Can Eat For Gut Health Sugar A lot of pathogenic bacteria thrive off of sugar in the diet. Sugar also leads to obesity which will wreak havoc on our gut microbiome. Vegetable oils They create massive inflammation throughout our entire body. We can metabolize sugar, but we can’t metabolize these seed oils. Medications (antibiotics, antacids, PPIs, and birth control) Birth control can deplete the body of key micronutrients. It can wreak havoc in our gut microbiome not only because of depleting the nutrients, but it can cause an imbalance of bacteria. Most people have too much stomach acid, and we overuse antacids. Stress Stress causes us to be in a catabolic state. When our digestive system is not really working because we're in a stress state, this can lead to a lot of bacterial overgrowth. Unresolved trauma People who've gone through trauma actually have a low vagal tone. When we go through periods of stress, our gut is affected. Sugar substitutes Use monk fruit and stevia instead of other popular substitutes like sucralose. Dairy and wheat Most of us can't really break down lactose. Try to do an elimination diet by removing dairy. Raw diets Raw vegetables have a lot of insoluble fibers. In general, we need to cook our food. [43:25] Building Lean Muscle Mass Important For Longevity Protein is incredibly important for our skeletal muscle mass. When we don't have adequate skeletal muscle mass, we have higher levels of blood sugar and higher levels of insulin. The number one reason why people end up in nursing homes is for sarcopenia. Overall, we need to eat high-quality protein and increase skeletal muscle mass in the body. [48:25] Which Is More Important: A Physical Six-Pack or a Mental Six-Pack? Rachel says a mental six-pack is more important than a physical six-pack. Losing weight won’t make you happy. Instead, who you are as a person will make you happy. Always work on being the best version of yourself and always do things that will improve your mental health and wellbeing. [40:55] How To Respond To Hateful Comments and Messages Online People like to put you down and criticize you online. Usually, it’s all about the person that is doing the criticizing. When you stand up for the things you believe in, then no one can make you feel bad. You have to know undoubtedly who you are and what you stand for. The Main Themes That Dr Mindy Discovered Our food intake and modern toxicity are some of the reasons why we are sick Dr Mindy doubles down that evolutionary mismatch, especially among women, is one of the main culprits of why we are sick Stress-eating work against our hormonal cycle The thrifty-gene hypothesis proposes that humans who were able to survive long periods without food were due to the thrifty gene that allowed them to move into ketosis at a much quicker rate [17:03] We Got The Diet Culture Wrong! Here’s Why Dr Mindy strongly believes that the notion that there’s one diet to keep you healthy or lose weight is erroneous. Metabolic switching helps the body to get the required energy it needs depending on the situation; the key is the constant in and out People always look for “absolutes” in healthcare, but the body doesn’t respond well to those absolutes [30:23] What Happened to Dr Mindy When She Started Fasting? Dr Mindy discovered that cycling in and out of fasting assisted her in alleviating her menopausal symptoms Identifying the quirks of hormones allowed Dr Mindy to identify the diet she needs Progesterone needs more glucose. If you want to maximize estrogen, keep your blood sugar down If you want to have a healthy ovulation, work on the microbiome and the liver, and you don’t want to go deep into ketosis Plan your diet in various phases, power phase, manifestation phase, and nurture phase [37:38] We Have a Hormonal Literacy Problem! How Do We Fix It? Dr Mindy spoke to thousands of doctors and found out that only a handful of them understood the underlying facets of hormones in our bodies She believes that we have a hormonal literacy problem, and women are the most affected as an imbalance in their hormonal cycle is being villainized Teenage girls should be taught early on about the emotional, physical, and chemical stress The language of hormones should be brought back because it helps control our mood, energy, and sleep. It helps control how we gain and lose weight. Understanding hormones means understanding the ins and outs of the body [50:58] Do You Have an Eating Disorder? Here Are Some Precautions YOU Should Know Before Fasting! If you have an eating disorder, you need to work with a health coach or your psychologist who has a deep understanding of fasting Fasting is done best when done with the community Working with the community on your fasting journey and connecting with them lifts up your oxytocin The strength of your marriage and the quality of your friendship plays an important role in living a healthier life and happiness You might want a quick fix to problems, the best way to diet or fast, but don’t lose sight of the importance of community  [58:47] Diet Failed Us! Why Understanding the Glycemic Index Matters Fast Like A Girl Book has an extensive discussion about failed diet strategies, one of them is the glycemic index You can search online for the GCM of something, but the most accurate way would be to have a CGM or blood sugar reader to have a full view of how much glucose your body is taking in Different foods have different glycemic impacts, and understanding that is important if you want to achieve a healthier body AND MUCH MORE! Today, I am blessed to have here with me Jay Nixon. He is a skilled speaker, author, coach, and mentor for anyone looking to get results and permanently alter their way of life. However, he still struggled with his mind as he is anxious about how his body looks. Nonetheless, he became a personal trainer at 17, and since then, Jay has begun to find the path to where he belongs. Ultimately, he decided to open his gym, started writing books, and began his career on coaching people. The Problem is You, Not the Food There's a lot of drug abuse on the scene in bodybuilding. There's not a lot of alcohol consumption, but there's a lot of prescription and recreational drug use. Your mindset around the food is the real issue, not the food itself. Food is more like fuel and a resource to nourish and do what your body wants. Instead of creating a short-term sustainable diet, make a lifestyle that you are comfortable maintaining forever. [17:00] The Wrong Beliefs in Losing Weight That You Should Avoid You don’t need to starve yourself.  It's a myth that there's good versus bad food. What we are talking about is real food, not with those different chemicals.  Counting macros and calories, it's not sustainable. Developed a lifestyle where you understand what food looks like and what it will do when you eat it.  People just want to be told what to do instead of learning what to do. [25:50] What is The Value of Having the Right Mindset in Losing Weight? This has nothing to do with the food, and nothing to do with being overweight. The weight loss was a side effect. It’s all about the brain and the mind. The book is about psychological reasons I learned working with clients and myself over time.  It was always the story, the mindset, or the belief systems that the client had psychologically that were the issue.  Jay uses fitness and nutrition to get people into my world, and then he unpacks the real reasons why they're there.  It will be useless to stay with the same beliefs you had before Jay. [32:16] Increase Your Thermostat: Love Yourself and Maintain Your Fitness  We have a lot of limiting beliefs, and we have a lot of self-doubts that hold us back. Sometimes, giving a compliment to someone who is not in the right frame of mind can affect them negatively.  It all starts with the psychology of what you believe you deserve. Jay’s favorite saying is that you'll never be, do or have more than you believe you deserve.  [34:20] How Can You Begin Your Lifelong Journey Towards a Healthy Lifestyle? First, Jay helps you to recognize the negative language you are using and change it. Then he will talk about the belief system of who you believe you are. Jay won't let you lie to yourself, but he won't be cruel. He will inform you in a kind manner.  If you're using the word “try”, start telling yourself, " I will do what's required. If you'll change your language, it will change your life.  If you continually break promises to yourself, that will create a lack of self-belief or a lack of confidence or just that lack of mentality.  [42:05] Hard work vs Intelligent Work: What is the Difference? He realizes that most people say they are hardworking, which made him think about its variability and subjectivity.  Most of the things he does would not prescribe as hard, but they require him to do them intelligently. There is much more value in being intelligent in food, how our body moves, and how we speak and act rather than working hard. AND MUCH MORE!
