EP006 (Part 1/4): The Theatres Trust with Claire Appleby and Jon Morgan - Part 1: Theatre quiz and introductions

In the episode 006 of the High Point podcast, we had the pleasure to visit Claire Appleby and Jon Morgan from the Theatres Trust at the Criterion Theatre (in the middle of the West End in London).

(Note: apologies if you can hear the tubes passing by and the building works. We tried to edit the episode the best we could to reduce their noise.)

In Part 1, Claire & Jon introduce themselves, we go through a theatre quiz and then talk about the Theatres Trust in general and how they support theatres in the UK including:

  • the structure of the organisation.
  • being the national advisory body for theatres in the UK.
  • their role as statutory consultee in the planning system. Last year, they commented on 20 pre-applications, 155 planning applications and 85 listed building consents.
  • providing high level design advice to theatre owners (and even sometimes bringing architects, theatre operators or project managers to comment)
  • their sources of revenues.
  • how they lobbied for the Agent of Change, which is a new law that give new developments the responsibility to mitigate their noise impact on existing noise sensitive areas, premises and other receptors.
  • contributing to the Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment with the Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT)
  • working with other specialist organisations and bodies to support theatres.

We also talked a little bit about rehousing, upgrading or respacing seats.

New parts and episodes are released every Monday at 8:00 (UK time).
