One of the greatest fears for a number of women is going for a run while alone. Many women fear that they will become the victim of a sexual assault or worse. Crime statistics show that these kind of attacks are rare and women are more likely to face greater dangers from traffic. However, the fear that they inspire Is very much real, as are smaller scale episodes of harassment or assaults even in well-populated areas. In fact, it’s estimated that 43% of women runners have experienced harassment compared to just 4% of men. But then in 2016, New York City became the scene for one such brutal attack on a young woman that made women across the city terrified of venturing out alone.
