#270 The Railroad Killer
In this episode we’re talking about a Mexican serial killer who rode freight trains across the U.S., Ángel Maturino Reséndiz. Media nicknamed him the Railroad Killer, and he was at one point the FBI’s most wanted fugitive. The FBI linked Resendiz to 15 murders across several states in the 1990s — with only one survivor to tell the tale. Reséndiz escaped capture several times by being voluntarily deported back to Mexico, it would take the FBI and the Railroad Killer’s own sister to finally bring him down in 1999. Despite its relatively low population, Antarctica has been host to some serious crimes over the years. Of course Antarctica has never had a permanent population, and its population is mainly made up of research stations that have been there for 100 years. Although a few countries claim sovereignty over parts of Antarctica, it isn’t governed in the same way as the rest of the world. There is no police force, no judiciary, no prisons. According to the Antarctic Treaty, 53 nations (it’s a long story) agreed that criminals on the continent should be tried by their own country’s laws and regulations. On Feb. 6, 2021, Kevin Jiang, a 26-year-old Yale graduate, and veteran, was with Zion Perry, his fiancée. They went hiking and ice fishing, followed by dinner. Then around 8:30 p.m. Kevin left her apartment and headed home. He didn't even make it two blocks before he was struck from behind by a dark SUV in what appeared to be a minor fender bender. So Kevin got out of his car, to check the damage and exchange information, and it ended up being the worst decision of his life.
