E16 - Navigating the Chaos of Life and Leadership with Sean Picton

E16: Interview with Sean Picton

Sean Picton is the Response Team Inspector for the Royal Gibraltar Police, he runs his own business called The Hero Coach, and is host of The Hero Help Desk Podcast. In this episode with Sean, we talk about navigating the chaos of life and leadership.

In our conversation we discussed using skill development as a tool for moving through and out of depression, embracing diversity in workplaces, evolution of culture and evolution of leaders. Sean also discussed strategies that he has successfully used to navigate through the challenges he faces in life and as a leader.

We also touch a little on mindset and the importance of continuity of character, decisions and ethics and how those allow us to give a standardised service as a leader. I loved the quote from Sean on Mindset – "mindset to our brains is like oil to a car and the better quality oil you have in the engine the longer and more efficient it will run"

Sean Picton Bio:

Sean grew up in Liverpool, England. From an early age, his dream was to become a police officer after a police officer visited his school. In 2008 he joined Merseyside Police as a civilian member of staff and in 2010 he fulfilled his dream of becoming a police officer.

Over the next 6 years, Sean was deployed to several different departments, including Response Team Policing and Neighbourhood Policing. During this time, he and his team received commendations for their work in disrupting organised crime within the Fazakerley, Croxteth and Norris Green areas. In 2016, Sean achieved another long term goal of policing abroad when he relocated to Gibraltar to continue his service for the Royal Gibraltar Police.

In 2018 Sean was promoted to Sergeant and redeployed to a Response Team. Soon after, Sean was successful in his application to join the Training + Recruitment Department where he remained until winter 2019 when he was redeployed back to the Response Teams. In July 2020, Sean was promoted once more, this time to Inspector and returned to the Training + Recruitment Department. During his time in this department, he and his team received commendations for their work in redeveloping the Probationer Management system.

In July 2022, Sean was redeployed to become the Response Team Inspector, where he remains today. Whilst conducting his duties as a serving police officer, Sean has since obtained certification as a Professionally Certified Coach with the ICF (International Coaching Federation) and now runs his own business called The Hero Coach. Through The Hero Coach, Sean delivers leadership and life coaching services, as well as career coaching for police officers.

In early 2023, Sean opened his own Podcast show called The Hero Help Desk, where he discusses all things leadership, wellbeing and police related matters.
