THE WRITINGS OF GEORGE WASHINGTON — 1748–1756: The Making of a Leader, Warrior & Statesman.
What can the earliest writings of George Washington reveal about the development of one of the most consequential figures in American history?
The early writings of George Washington offer a rare opportunity to follow the development of one of the most important figures in American history almost year by year. Before he became Commander in Chief of the Continental Army or the first President of the United States, Washington was a young surveyor, frontier traveler, military officer, landowner, and Virginia gentleman. This collection of journals, letters, memoirs, military writings, and personal correspondence covers the formative period from 1748 through 1756—years in which Washington moved from adolescence into military and public life while Britain and France competed for control of North America. The chapters follow this transformation chronologically.
1748–1752 — THE YOUNG SURVEYOR
The first chapter covers Washington's earliest writings and the formative years of his professional and personal life.In 1748, sixteen-year-old George Washington accompanied George William Fairfax on a surveying expedition into the Virginia frontier. His journal records the landscape, settlements, rivers, roads, and conditions he encountered, giving him valuable firsthand knowledge of the western territories. In 1749, Washington received his surveyor's license and became surveyor of Culpeper County. Meanwhile, the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle ended the War of the Austrian Succession, but British-French competition in North America continued. In 1751, Washington traveled with his half-brother Lawrence to Barbados, where he contracted and survived smallpox. In 1752, Lawrence died, and Washington inherited Mount Vernon. These years marked Washington's transformation from a young surveyor into a man gaining land, experience, connections, and increasing responsibility.
1753 — THE FRENCH THREAT: WASHINGTON'S FRONTIER MISSION TO THE OHIO COUNTRY
By 1753, British-French competition in the Ohio country was intensifying. Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie sent the young Major George Washington to demand that French forces withdraw from territory claimed by Britain.Beginning in October, Washington traveled through difficult winter conditions to Fort LeBoeuf. The French rejected his demand, but Washington returned with valuable information about their military positions, preparations, and the geography of the region. His journal documented the journey, diplomacy, Native American relations, and strategic importance of the Ohio Valley. The expedition marked Washington's transition from frontier surveyor to military and political figure.
1754 (JANUARY–JUNE) — THE FIRST CLASH: JUMONVILLE GLEN & THE ROAD TO WAR
The third chapter covers the first half of 1754, when the diplomatic confrontation of 1753 began turning into armed conflict.Washington returned to the Ohio country with Virginia troops. The British and French were competing to establish control over the region, while Native American nations pursued their own diplomatic and strategic interests. In the spring of 1754, Washington established a position at the Great Meadows and became involved in the confrontation that culminated in the Battle of Jumonville Glen on May 28.The encounter involved Washington's Virginia troops and a French party commanded by Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville. The circumstances surrounding the encounter became controversial, particularly regarding the French mission and the events leading to the fighting.Washington subsequently ordered the construction of Fort Necessity at Great Meadows. The first half of 1754 therefore represents the moment when Washington's frontier mission became an actual military conflict. It also illustrates the uncertainty of frontier warfare. Washington had limited resources, imperfect information, difficult terrain, and complicated relationships with both Native allies and colonial authorities. These writings provide an important record of his decisions, communications, military movements, and attempts to explain events as the crisis developed.
1754 (JUNE–DECEMBER) — FORT NECESSITY & WASHINGTON'S FIRST MILITARY DEFEAT
The second half of 1754 begins with one of the most significant setbacks of Washington's early military career. On July 3, 1754, French and allied forces attacked Fort Necessity. Washington's position was overwhelmed, and he ultimately agreed to surrender. The defeat became an important episode in the developing French and Indian War. It also generated controversy over Washington's actions and the circumstances of the engagement.Washington's subsequent writings and correspondence show him attempting to explain what had happened, defend his decisions, and maintain his reputation. The political consequences extended beyond Virginia. The conflict demonstrated that British and French competition in North America could no longer be contained through diplomacy alone. In 1754, the Albany Congress also met in New York. Delegates discussed colonial cooperation and relations with Native nations, while Benjamin Franklin proposed the Albany Plan of Union. The year therefore ended with the North American frontier moving rapidly toward a much larger war.For Washington personally, the experience brought defeat but also increased military visibility. His early reputation would increasingly be connected with the frontier conflict.
1755 — BRADDOCK'S EXPEDITION & THE BATTLE OF THE MONONGAHELA
The fifth chapter covers 1755, a decisive year in Washington's military development.British authorities organized a major expedition against the French in North America under General Edward Braddock. Washington accompanied Braddock as a volunteer aide-de-camp.The British objective was to capture Fort Duquesne, located at the strategic junction of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. The campaign ended in disaster at the Battle of the Monongahela on July 9, 1755.British forces were attacked by French troops and their Native allies. General Braddock was mortally wounded, and the British army suffered heavy casualties.Washington survived the battle and became associated with his conduct under fire. The experience also exposed him to the practical difficulties of eighteenth-century warfare, including logistics, supply, communications, terrain, command structures, and the differences between European military methods and frontier warfare. The writings from 1755 therefore provide an important record of Washington's increasing military experience. The same year also saw the wider conflict expanding. Britain and France were now moving toward a much larger confrontation that would eventually become the global Seven Years' War.For Washington, 1755 was a year of battlefield experience, organizational lessons, danger, and growing responsibility.
1756 (JANUARY–JULY) — COLONEL WASHINGTON & THE DEFENSE OF VIRGINIA
The sixth chapter covers the first seven months of 1756, when the North American conflict was becoming part of an international war.In January, Washington continued his responsibilities in Virginia's military defense. Frontier settlements remained vulnerable, and the colony struggled with the problems of recruiting soldiers, supplying forts, protecting settlements, and maintaining communication across enormous distances. In February 1756, Washington was appointed colonel of the Virginia Regiment and commander of Virginia's military forces. His responsibilities were therefore considerably greater than they had been only a few years earlier. The international situation also changed dramatically. In May 1756, Britain formally declared war on France, transforming the North American struggle into part of the global Seven Years' War.Washington's correspondence from this period reflects the practical challenges of command. His writings concern troops, forts, supplies, frontier defense, officers, orders, correspondence, and relations with colonial authorities. The young surveyor of 1748 had now become a senior military officer responsible for the defense of an entire colony's frontier.
1756 (AUGUST–DECEMBER) — THE SEVEN YEARS' WAR & WASHINGTON'S FRONTIER COMMAND
The final chapter brings the collection through the second half of 1756.The war was now fully international. Fighting was taking place not only in North America but also in Europe, the Caribbean, India, and other parts of the world. For Virginia, however, the immediate concern remained frontier security.Washington continued commanding the Virginia Regiment and dealing with the practical problems of defending a long and sparsely populated frontier. His correspondence from this period reflects military administration, troop movements, fortifications, supplies, recruitment, discipline, and communication with government officials. The events of 1756 also demonstrate how dramatically Washington's life had changed in only eight years. In 1748, he had been a sixteen-year-old surveyor exploring the Virginia frontier.By the end of 1756, he was a twenty-four-year-old military commander with extensive experience in surveying, diplomacy, frontier warfare, military administration, and colonial politics.
THE MAKING OF A LEADER
Taken together, these seven chapters document a remarkable period of development.Washington's early writings do not present the finished political figure who would later command the Continental Army and become President. Instead, they reveal a young man learning through experience. The documents record journeys, observations, mistakes, successes, military defeats, correspondence, strategic decisions, personal ambitions, and increasing responsibility. They also place Washington's life within the larger transformation of eighteenth-century North America. The frontier was becoming the battlefield of competing empires.
