Fasting Q&A with Dr Jason Fung: Fasting and Gout, Creatine, TOFIs, Hypothyroidism, and More

Fasting Q&A with Dr Jason Fung: Fasting and Gout, Creatine, TOFIs, Hypothyroidism, and More

Episode #208

In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community:

  1. Do you think healthy individuals should take a daily multivitamin? [04:40]
  2. I am a 300-pound male and usually have about 20g of protein a day when I fat fast. If I have more, I can’t stick with it. I’ve found that before I do a 66 (two per week), I need about 140-200g of protein the day before in order to complete the fast. In other words, doing a fat fast right before my fast doesn’t hold me and I binge. Is there anything wrong with doing this? [05:50]
  3. What is the best way to extend a fast when someone has a history of gout? [11:40]
  4. What is your opinion on Dr. Roy Taylor's work about the pancreas not really being burned out but clogged with fat so the beta cells cannot function properly? [12:51]
  5. If someone has a high LP(a) of over 200, but their Trigs:HDL ratio is 1:1, then don’t worry, but what about plasmapheresis for Lp(a)? [14:19]
  6. Will younger people respond quicker to IF than older people? [15:45]
  7. I’ve read the science behind creatine and the many benefits to your muscles (I weight train) and your brain, and recently purchased a high quality brand. Creatine doesn’t contain protein, it’s a naturally occurring compound made from amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine, so will it prevent autophagy? [17:15]
  8. If instead of adding MCT oil to the morning coffee we would take an omega pill instead, which of these might have less of an insulin release? [19:49]
  9. TFM’s Book Club is reading Dr. Christopher Palmer's “Brain Energy” this month. He covers the metabolic theory of mental health, specifically with regards to mitochondrial health and optimal brain-energy metabolism impacting our prefrontal cortex function. Can you talk about this ‘hidden in plain sight’ mental metabolic disorder of the brain, showing the progressive degeneration of the prefrontal cortex seen so rampant in our culture today? [21:21]
  10. What kind of fasting protocol can be done for someone considered to be a TOFI and doesn’t want to lose too much weight? [25:34]
  11. There’s some conflicting research on how keto and fasting affects T3 levels. For individuals with low T3 production, do you recommend a specific keto or fasting approach and are there any important considerations? [27:26]

Fasting Q&A: Weight Loss and Excess Skin, Taking Medication, 16/8 Eating Windows, and More

Fasting Q&A: Weight Loss and Excess Skin, Taking Medication, 16/8 Eating Windows, and More

Episode #139 In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions: 1. Which fasting protocol is best for getting rid of excess skin while you also get rid of excess weight? [01:58] 2. My GP has told me to take medication three times a day. How do I incorporate intermittent fasting into my lifestyle when I have to take meds three times a day? [09:26] 3. I’ve been fasting for two years. I lost 20 pounds the first year but gained 10 back in the second. I try to do 42-hour fasts but end up breaking it around the 20-hour mark. My blood glucose numbers are up and my weight isn’t coming down. I am a 45-year-old female. I am ready to give up. Please help. [13:50] 4. I was recently diagnosed with vulvar lichen sclerosus (LS). My gynaecologist says that it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder affecting the skin of the vulva. It is a horrifying condition that can cause changes to the architecture of the vulva, intense itching, tearing of the skin, etc. I’ve never known anyone to have this condition, but my gynaecologist says that she has a lot of patients with LS. Have any of your clients seen improvement in their LS? Is there a particular fasting protocol that you would recommend. I’m just devastated by this diagnosis. [21:43] 5. I understand that snacking (even with healthy foods) is a bad idea because it keeps your insulin levels up so how many meals would you suggest is the most effective during a typical 8-hour window in a 16/8 IF regime? Or maybe a better way to look at it is how many hours should I leave between meals to allow insulin to go back down? Hot Topic: Therapeutic Fasting vs Fasting Sometimes

Hot Topic: Therapeutic Fasting vs Fasting Sometimes

Episode #137 In this episode Nadia and Terri dive deep into why so many of us struggle to make progress and therefore stay stuck in the uncomfortable space of starting/stopping, or how many of us push ourselves so hard that we can't sustain consistently to see the lasting results. Tune in to find out how our brain can sometimes trip us up when it comes to motivation because of its love for novelty, and why so many people start the New Year with good intentions but struggle to maintain that momentum for long enough to see lasting results.  How do we change our mindset to overcome these issues? Terri shares some great analogies to help adjust our mindset and behaviour and take confident steps towards the success we have been looking for, and Nadia reinforces the importance of taking a step-by-step approach towards therapeutic fasting that starts with, of course, TRE (time-restricted eating). Why Am I Struggling Even Though I Am Fasting?

Episode #135 In this episode, Terri shares a frank discussion about why so many people struggle or don't see the results they are seeking despite fasting. She encourages listeners to honestly reflect on whether their relationship with food may be the obstacle. Fasting Q&A: IBS, Raised Cholesterol, Fat-Loss Maintenance, Busting Plateaus, and Erythritol

Fasting Q&A: IBS, Raised Cholesterol, Fat-Loss Maintenance, Busting Plateaus, and Erythritol

Episode #134 In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions: 1. I have IBS-C and a gluten sensitivity, along with ever changing hormones as I am perimenopausal. I’m trying to find the best regimen to help. Of course weight loss would be nice but my main goal is to rid myself of abdominal pains, severe constipation, and nausea. [01:43] 2. My mom has type 2 diabetes  and is taking Metformin. I have convinced her to do at least 16 hours of fasting a day and she has been doing this for 5 months or so. She says her glucose levels are much more stable but her cholesterol has gone up. Should she worry? [09:21] 3. Once you have reached your fat-loss goal, how do you transition to a maintenance schedule without gaining back the weight? And what would a good fat-loss maintenance schedule be? [15:10]  4. I started fasting about a year and a half ago with a very mixed schedule and was successful in losing about 25 lbs in 8 months. Since then I’ve been at a plateau for another 8 months. I find it hard to not eat at least once per day. What are your thoughts on ADF with the 500 cal vs without the 500 cals? [17:35]  5. I don’t think I’ve heard you discuss the sweetener erythritol. I realize that it may still not be great for sugar cravings, but does it affect insulin? If I had a small amount in my tea, would it break my fast? I’ve seen conflicting messages?
