In this episode of Serial Streamers, Jami recaps the Netflix docuseries American Nightmare. In 2015, a 9-1-1 call came in to the Vallejo PD. It was a man claiming that his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, had been abducted from his home by perpetrators wearing wet suits. The man, Aaron Quinn, laid out an elaborate story for detectives who did not believe him. The media dubbed it the “Gone Girl” case due to the similarities it had to the movie. Law enforcement accused Aaron and Denise of perpetrating a “Kidnapping Hoax” which may have caused them not to properly investigate the alleged crime. As it turned out, the stranger-than-fiction story was true and a suspect was identified. Jami provides a full recap of the docuseries and doesn’t hold back on her opinions of the authorities involved in this case. Within moments of opening the Bank of America branch on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood, California on the morning of February 28th, 1997, the staff’s worst fears were realized. Two men, later identified as Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, entered the bank wearing highly customized body armor. The men were armed with automatic weapons and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition. These were no ordinary thieves, and they were about to turn the streets of Los Angeles into a war zone, and in doing so, change American policing forever. Gypsy Rose was paroled in January of 2024 and has been documenting her post-prison life on social media since then. Some people believe Gypsy Rose is a master manipulator who shouldn’t be celebrated, but others believe she committed murder in order to save herself from her abusive mother.
