EP47 Award Winning Filmmaker Ben Lawrence and His Secret Photography Obsession

Today's guest is Ben Lawrence, he's an award winning director, screenwriter, and producer.
In Ben's own words 'I’m more of a filmmaker but, my secret, scared love was always photography.'

Ben’s films have screened at festivals including Toronto, Busan, Sydney, Edinburgh, Clermont-Ferrand, Sheffield, DocNYC, Melbourne, Palm Springs, Sitges and Sao Paulo.

In 2022 he was nominated for Australia’s most prestigious journalism documentary award - The Walkley Documentary Award.

He is a two-time Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award nominee and four-time Australian Writers Guild Award winner across feature film, documentary and podcast categories.

In 2020 he was awarded the Australian Directors Guild highest award for his debut feature film, Hearts and Bones - which starred Hugo Weaving and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.

His 2018 documentary, Ghosthunter won Sydney Film Festival Best Documentary and was nominated for the esteemed Illuminate Award at Sheffield DocFest.

Ben has also directed for factual TV series, including The Jury: Death on the Staircase, Stuff The British Stole and the 4 Corners series, Exposed: The Case of Kelli Lane.

His latest feature documentary, Ithaka opened both the Barcelona & Berlin Human Rights Film Festivals - where it won the audience award and also screened in competition at Sydney, DocNYC, Sheffield and DocEdge Festival - where Ben was awarded Best International Director.
