Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin

In this episode, I share some reflections from recent online conversations I've had while preparing for our series in 2 Timothy—engagements with unbelievers, those from other religions, and even professing Christians who reject the authority of Scripture. One hotly debated phrase I’ve seen come under fire is: “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” Many claim it’s unbiblical—but is that actually true?

We’ll look at the origins of this phrase, what Scripture actually says about God's love and His hatred of sin (and sinners), and how Christians should think biblically and act faithfully in response. We’ll examine verses from John 3, Romans 5, Psalms, and more, and consider insights from faithful thinkers like Augustine, Stephen Charnock, and Thomas Watson.

Ultimately, we’ll see how a right understanding of God’s justice and love deepens our awe of grace, and how we, as His people, are called to abhor sin, love our enemies, and proclaim Christ—trusting God's justice and showing His mercy.
