What Would You Do if You Weren’t Afraid? Powerful, Practical Tools to Help Deal with Anxiety. Part 2 with Ellen Hendriksen

Today’s guest is Dr. Ellen Hendriksen. This is her second appearance on Untangle to share her expertise on all issues related to anxiety. She’s a clinical psychologist who focuses on releasing anxiety so that you can be more of your authentic self. Ellen serves on the faculty at Boston University's Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders and is the author of How To Be Yourself: Quiet Your Inner Critic and Rise Above Social Anxiety. Her scientifically-based, zero-judgment approach has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, Oprah Magazine and many other media outlets.

She defines anxiety as a close cousin to another familiar emotion, which is fear. Fear is immediate. Fear is when the snarling dog is running at you. Fear is when the bus is barreling down the road at you. Anxiety is also fear, but it’s fear cast to the horizon. It’s fear out in the uncertain future.

And she discusses social anxiety.

It’s not surprising, she says, that at the heart of social anxiety is perfectionism and perfectionism is a little bit of a misnomer because it's not really about trying to be perfect. It's about never feeling good enough. And that ties right into the very definition of social anxiety; feeling like there's some flaw that we need to cover or hide, or else people will judge and reject us. She presents a number of tools to work with our anxiety, whether we want to deepen our relationships, build confidence, face our social fears in a more supportive way or challenge your own perfectionism standards.

Good news! She also talks about the superpowers of anxiety.

Robert Hammond — The Guy Who Built a Park in The Sky (and became a meditation teacher!)

Robert Hammond — The Guy Who Built a Park in The Sky (and became a meditation teacher!)

Robert Hammond is The Co-founder of Friends of the High Line…the organization that lead the effort to build an elevated park on an abandoned railway line in Manhattan. I was intrigued by his story and his ted talk and by the fact that he’s not that different from the rest of us, but had the passion and hutzpah to help turn an abandoned steel industrial structure with wildflowers into a world-class park and tourist attraction in NYC. He started by simply trying to preserve it and ended up raising over $300 mm to turn it into something incredibly unique to the city. This interview is about his personal story and, ultimately, how he also became a Vedic meditation teacher. You can visit the Highline in NYC from below 14th street all the way to 34th street on the west side. Learn more about your ad choices. Toni Bernhard - Handling the Mix of Joys and Sorrows in Life

Toni Bernhard - Handling the Mix of Joys and Sorrows in Life

Toni Bernhard is an author who has written 4 books on issues related to coping with physical and emotional pain and illness. The book we discussed today is called “How to Be Sick. A Buddhist Inspired Guide for the Chronically Ill and Their Caregivers.” Her companion guide is an amazing resource of coping tools. Toni has been living with a viral infection for 20 years and, as such, lives with pain and fatigue every day. She was previously a Law Professor at UC Davis until her life took this unexpected turn. Her books share her personal story but are also compilations of the wisdom and tools that have helped her cope with the physical and emotional challenges she continues to face. I found her to be uplifting, graceful, honest, and wise as she shared how she has navigated and accepted her life journey…for better and for worse. You’ll hear how illness can be a metaphor for life and how we can all handle the mix of joys and sorrows that we inevitably face. Learn more about your ad choices.
