208 - Stage Manager for iPad Is Not for Everyone - With Guest Guy Serle

The latest In Touch With iOS with Dave and Warren they are joined by guest Guy Serle. Stage Manager is a great new feature for multitasking on the iPad in iPadOS 16 it won't work on any iPad below M1 processor so 2 year old iPads will not get full experience and many are unhappy. The EU wants to force USB-C on all mobile devices and Apple may need to retire the lightning connector which is over 10 years old. tvOS actually has some new features which Apple rarely offers. Sherlocked apps are a thing and Reincubate makers of Camo Studio using iPhone as webcam add some great new features with overlays and lower thirds. Plus much more.

We are on week 2 of Beta iOS 16 for developers. Also HomePod Software 16 will be available to public beta users for the first time there are some new features in iOS 16 that I was pleasantly surprised to find. When you type a temperature in Celsius it will automatically bring up a conversion to fahrenheit and kelvin. This was in the messages app it should apply to other apps. Same applies to time zones type in a time with a time zone in messages it will give you the local time for the recipient.

We talk about more WWDC 22 announcements and items that were not reviewed during the event and other topics this week.

Stage Manager controversy won't go away: A lot of people with slightly older, non-M1 iPad are NOT happy that Stage Manager is limited to M1 iPads. Apple claims that older models (non M1 iPads) won't be able to offer the "Full Experience" for a variety of reasons like faster internal storage and more RAM. Some fire back," then make it less capable for older iPads" which is not something Apple is likely to do.

With this we are starting to see cracks in the Intel/M-Series Processor divide with some features now pretty much M-series only, leaving still quite capable Macs in the rear view mirror. Live Captions in FaceTime, Sidecar with Reference mode only for M-series Macs and M1 iPads, and Emoji Support in Dictation Mode

Sherlocked apps will they recover? Dave reached out to Reincubate the makers of Camo Studio and the current iOS app was crashing on iOS 16. Happy to report that Camo now with version 1.6.6 fixes some bugs but best of all it doesn't crash on iOS 16 anymore. But then they have a plan to stay relevant as do other apps. https://9to5mac.com/2022/06/16/sherlocked-apps/
