78 - 'The Long Game Of Excellence' (Dom Famularo tribute)

"I dare you to do better." Dom Famularo

These were the final words I heard in my last meeting with my mentor and teacher Dom Famularo, only weeks before he passed. I'd known him almost three decades, and I'd heard this challenge before.

Dom embodied this spirit in all he did, and to all who were blessed to cross his path. He challenged others to live a life of possibility and potential everywhere he went, which included over 60 countries. Drummers that traveled from around the world to his 'Wizdom Woodshed' studio would see a large world map speckled with dots marking the places he'd been to, which covered most of it. But it also reminded him of where he hadn't been, driving him to always push into new ground.

Rightly called the global ambassador of drumming, he empowered others to stretch past the outer edges of what they thought was possible, and then push further still. Fully in the present moment using 'owning now' as his mantra, I don't know if he ever thought about his legacy. But if he did, I know he'd be proud that he used his life as an example of believing in yourself, chasing your passion, and then taking it all 10X higher.

It's not the one hit wonders that fascinate me, but those that sustain excellence over a lifetime. Those that stand for a 'mighty why' and then live it consistently, year after year. Not just through the applause when it's easy, but also when it's hardest and no one is looking. Dom devoted a lifetime of standing for a consistent message and cause. Some can fly a flag for a year or two, but so few live their truth year after year through action, inspiring others to reach higher and come along for the ride. Anyone that crossed paths with him knows what he stood for:

• Strive for FREEDOM of fearless self expression. • Push your own evolution and the artform forward by constantly breaking free of your comfort zone. • Live every day like it's your last, and play every note with passion and joy!

'I dare you to do better.' This challenge of 'take what I've accomplished and build on it', was also given to Dom as a gift from his teachers. He was a seeker, and found the very best mentors to explore the magic of drumming. Standing on the shoulders of giants is how we go to the outer edges of what's possible, and then shatter it.
