Why the Disciples Failed . . . and How We Can Avoid It This Homily begins with the Shema . . . “Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone” . . . . . . as a call to attentive listening, not just speaking or acting on our own plans. Scripture shows the consequences of listening or failing to listen: Adam disobeyed because he did not listen, while Abraham, Mary, and the saints prospered in God’s will because they did. “Israel” refers to those who cling to God, even in struggle. God alone is to be valued above all else . . . above self, possessions, and ambitions . . . and loved with heart (passions), soul (spiritual being), and strength (talents). St. Augustine’s counsel . . . love God in all things and all things for God . . . reminds us to see Him behind all creation and relationships. How? The Homily tells us! Why Did The Disciples Fail Today’s Gospel account of the disciples failing to heal a possessed boy illustrates that without God’s direction, we can do nothing, even if we have succeeded before.
