All About That BASS!

Anthony leads the Modern Musicology crew in a discussion about the masters of the bottom end, the foundation of the band, the bringers of the thunder -- BASS PLAYERS! We highlight some of the best players in rock, metal, soul, and funk by sharing our favorite songs that open with unaccompanied bass parts! We've got examples from Metallica, Prince, Motorhead, Porcupine Tree, Van Halen, and more. And of course, you can't have a discussion about bass players and not include Chris Squire of Yes and Geddy Lee of Rush!

If you want to hear the full songs that we reference in this show, you can find them all on a specially-made handy-dandy Spotify Playlist!

These are some of our faves -- what about yours? Is there a song with an unaccompanied bass intro that we didn't mention? Drop us a line and let us know at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or just leave a comment on our socials or whatever podcast platform you're listening to us.

#15 - Favorite Opening Tracks EVER

#15 - Favorite Opening Tracks EVER

An opening track should be more than simply the first song you hear on an album. A really good opening track sets the tone; it tells you what to expect from the rest of the album. But the BEST opening tracks are a statement of intent. It's a declaration. It's shots fired. We talk about some of our favorite opening tracks ever with our friend Courtland Lewis.  What are your favorites? Do you disagree with any of our picks? Did we miss one that you love? Tell us what it is and why it's great! Email us at modernmusicology1@gmail.com or leave us a comment wherever you're listening! https://www.facebook.com/ModernMusicology https://twitter.com/ModrnMusicology https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk-MlcGy5u3fK1j4bVty1Kw Modern Musicology is part of the Earth Station One podcast network. https://esonetwork.com/

Talking Music Books with author Nick Griffiths!

Talking Music Books with author Nick Griffiths!

In this episode we're joined by author Nick Griffiths, whose new book DeadStar: Who the Hell Was Garth Tyson? was released January 2022. We also discuss some of our favorite music books, fiction and non-fiction, that we've read in recent years. About DeadStar:  Garth Tyson wanted to be the next David Bowie. He fell short. Waaaay short. Burnt out, he fled the stage at Glastonbury '85, having been pelted with mud, and was never seen again. Decades after Garth's disappearance, former bandmates, friends, relatives, lovers, music-biz execs and two fans (you try finding more) reunite to tell Garth's compelling, tragicomic tale. https://www.amazon.com/DeadStar-Who-Hell-Garth-Tyson/dp/1803690135/ref=sr_1_1?crid=232EJPV5ROOMP&keywords=deadstar+nick+griffiths&qid=1645476442&sprefix=nick+griffiths%2Caps%2C336&sr=8-1

Can You Separate the Art From the Artist?

Can You Separate the Art From the Artist?

We tackle a tricky topic in this episode. We all know artists who have either done awful things or who turn out to be awful people in general. Does that affect the way you listen to their music? Do you no longer monetarily support that artist? How bad is too bad? We do our best to discuss the situation from all angles.  Let us know what you think of this one, and if there are any artists that you have disowned because of their words or actions.
