The triple homicide, known as the “Halloween Massacre,” occurred in Pasadena, California in 1993. As rare as violent crimes are in Pasadena, the Halloween Massacre was the second triple homicide in the City in less than a three-year time span. On Friday, March 22, 1991, at about 2:30 in the morning, Pasadena police received a call asking them to do a welfare check at a posh home located on the 1300th block of Fairlawn Way. Officers arrived about 18 minutes later to find three deceased teenage girls. The brutal crime scene would haunt the lead detective until his dying day. Just seven days after a quadruple homicide in Wichita, Kansas, a second would take place. This crime, known as The Wichita Massacre, would become one of the most famous crimes in the history of Kansas, along with those committed by infamous serial killer, Dennis Rader (known as BTK). Between December 7 and December 14, 2000, two brothers, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, went on a robbery, rape and murder spree in Wichita. The Carr brothers inflicted great pain and suffering upon their victims, and their victims’ families. On October 15, 1990, in Jacksonville Florida, a tragic fire would change the field of arson investigation forever. Decades old fires, which were to determined to be from arson, were now going to be re-examined as a result of what is widely known as the Lime Street Fire. 13 year old, Kelly Ann Tinyes, walked down the street to her neighbor’s house in Valley Stream, New York. The young girl was never seen alive again. When police found her body, they could have never prepared themselves for what they were about to witness. The trial was filled with outbursts of emotion from the gallery, while the defendant kept his head down most of the time. A juror who sat on the trial shared insight with me, and also spoke about how the months-long trial affected her. This brutal murder would pit two families against each other ….for decades. First grader, Gabriel Fernandez, lived anyone’s worst nightmare. His mother, Pearl Fernandez, was an unfit parent, completely detached from her children …especially Gabriel. Plain and simple, she despised her young son and put him through years of neglect and abuse. Pearl’s boyfriend took part in the abuse …until it escalated to a point at which young Gabriel’s body had sustained all it could take. There were multiple cries for help, multiple red flags and blatant signs, and multiple reports of abuse. Still, young Gabriel lost his life at the hands of people who should have loved and protected him. Gabriel was murdered, and it could have been prevented. This is part of Gabriel’s story.
