FFFM | Recent Advocacy Wins and a Look at Chapter Advocacy

In this Fighting for Family Medicine episode, AAFP Vice President of Government Relations David Tully recaps several of the Academy's recent key advocacy victories as new policies begin to take effect. Next, he speaks about the AAFP's chapter-level advocacy with Julie Harrison, the AAFP's Senior Manager for the Center for State Policy.

As Harrison explains, the CSP is "the hub that tracks what's happening in the different states, and then, when it identifies a trend, develops support materials for chapters to use in their advocacy efforts."

Their conversation recounts several wins notched by chapters over the past year on issues such as noncompete agreements and scope of practice. Harrison also outlines a tool introduced for chapters last summer: the AAFP's primary care spend toolkit, Making the Case for Primary Care.

"I have to admit, it's awesome," Harrison says of the toolkit. "It includes a matrix of different factors that advocates should be considering within their own states, like that state's policy environment, that state's existing infrastructure, and that state's own market dynamics. It also includes case studies in eight states and identifies how different strategies were utilized in these success stories here."

Tully and Harrison remind listeners that registration is open for the Academy's biggest in-person advocacy event, the Family Medicine Advocacy Summit, May 19-21 in Washington, D.C.
