Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
Mention John Cusack, and most people think of "Say Anything," "Better Off Dead," or "High Fidelity," but Gene would argue Cusack's best film is the oft-forgotten "Grosse Pointe Blank," a movie that brought out the best of every actor in it. Thankfully, listener David from North of England was inspired by the movie's music and painful depiction of a 10-year high school reunion, giving us an excuse to discuss Ash's fear of hotel rooms, Dick's fear of never leaving his home town, and Gene's fear of never being able to go home again. This episode also explores masterful improvisation by a killer cast, real bonds between old friends, subverted expectations, emotional rollercoasters, teen love, strong women, the makings of great shootouts, and the goddess who is Joan Cusack. Sixteen Candles (1984)
It's been a while since Shat The Movies covered a John Hughes movie, and this time we're going back to where it all started for the quintessential '80s director: "Sixteen Candles." This high school comedy cemented the roles Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall would play for the next decade, and it gave us some of the most iconic scenes in '80s cinema. In this podcast, the Shat Crew debates girls' underwear, where to draw the line between flirting and harassment, the right number of bathrooms for a house, the importance of birthdays, whether Ringwald is actually pretty, what to do with perverts in the family, and whether the lead man is an asshole. Ash and Big D discuss penis sizes, while Gene recalls the time he tried to get sexy with a typewriter. Plus, the gang shares its fan fiction on what comes after the candles are blown out. Clerks (1994)
"Clerks" put director Kevin Smith on the map and taught '90s kids we all could be directors with just a roll of black-and-white film, a few friends, and a credit card. The conversations were witty, fast-paced, and perhaps a little too cheeky. The actors were unseasoned and awkward. The situations were edgy for 1994. And buried in all of it was a different style of storytelling that would blossom into the View Askewniverse. This landmark independent film brought us Berserker, blowjob counts, rooftop hockey, Jay and Silent Bob, and a snapshot of a world somewhere between the unabashed fun of the '80s and the slick production of the new millennium. If you're a fan of Big D and Gene ganging up on Ash, this is the episode for you. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
The 1978 "Halloween" was a hit with the Shat The Movies crew, so we were overjoyed when loyal listener Tom C. in Texas chose its sequel "Halloween 4" as this year's Spooktacular special. "The Return of Michael Myers" has everything we loved about the original, minus the spectacular boobs, plus some great '80s special effects. Michael is deadlier. The town is more violent, and Dr. Loomis is a lot more Dr. Loomisy. Perhaps the scariest part is a look back at parenting in the '80s. Why did our parents let us eat what we ate? Why did they leave us alone when we needed them most? Why did they let us wander around town in the dark on Halloween night, visiting strangers' homes and mingling with adults wearing disguises? Why didn't they make us wear pants? Really, it's a miracle any of us lived to see 2020. So let's celebrate life by cheering for deaths. That's the true spirit of the season. Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (1989)
Shat The Movies is proud to complete it's first film trilogy, and what better series than "Indiana Jones," whose original three movies began and ended in the Shatacular '80s. The Nazis are back, the leading lady is sly, and we are treated to the super, sexy, scandalous, slippery, scientific Scotsman Sean Connery in one of the best comedic pairings of the decade. "The Last Crusade" gave us back the Indy we love: a grave desecrating, German killing, clumsy nerd who just happens to always come out on top. But it's not without nonsense. The Shat Crew explores inconsistencies in the Holy Grail's legend, problems with the tank scene, and the criminal misuse of sidekicks. Commissioners Candice and Andy loved the movie so much, they named their daughter Indiana. We hope you'll dig it, too. Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984)
Back in 2017, we awarded "Raiders of The Lost Ark" a perfect wipe score. The magical combination of Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Kasdan, and Karen Allen was irresistible and timeless. But change the writing, change the villains, and change the lead lady, and you wind up with a very different movie in the 1984 prequel—one with xenophobia, ridiculous physics, bloated scenes, and a very different Indy. Missteps aside, "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" remains a classic with its action sequences, creative set design, quotable lines, lovable characters, and that ultra-fun mine cart escape. Plus, the organ removal, child slavery, and gratuitous body count basically led to the invention of PG-13 Movies. Is "Temple of Doom" the weakest movie in the "Indiana Jones" franchise, or are Big D and Ash justified in their love for a misunderstood film? Listen and judge for yourself. Maximum Overdrive (1986)
Every child of the '80s remembers "Maximum Overdrive," that cool horror movie where cars come alive and a green goblin semi-truck tries to kill Emilio Estevez. What we don't remember is how high Stephen King was when he decided to write and direct a film in which guns aim themselves, kids get run over by steamrollers, and aliens attempt to use cosmic broom against mankind. Still, there's a lot to enjoy about "Maximum Overdrive": the AC/DC soundtrack, a murderous soda machine, truck stop love, newlyweds, Big D's selfishness, and of course the beautifully weird color of '80s blood. Detroit Rock City (1999)
In a year when seeing concerts became impossible, listener Chris T. commissioned a movie about four teenagers doing the impossible to see the greatest show of their lives: "Detroit Rock City." You wanted the best? You got ... the Shat Crew talking dead siblings, paper concert tickets, shitty moms, cutting class, dream Volvos, Detroit landmarks, Gene's old band, shaking your wee wee, Amanda Finch, and of course KISS. Will Shat The Movies give "Detroit Rock City" the respect it never got at the box office, or is it time to acknowledge this Edward Furlong movie flopped for a reason? Time to paint your face, pour some cold gin, crank up the pod, and find out.
