We Choose Our Responses & They Define Our Lived Experience w/ Yale Director of Emotional Intelligence Marc Brackett

“Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation.” This is the quote by Holocaust survivor Viktor E Frankl that headlines a new book titled, Dealing With Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want. The book comes from my guest in this episode, Marc Brackett. Mark is the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and a professor in the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine at Yale University. Marcs research for over 25 years has focused on the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in learning, decision making, creativity, relationships, health, and performance. The quote from Viktor Frankl that came from his time in a concentration camp, and that Marc has devoted his life to, is saying that no matter what happens to us, we get to choose how we respond. And my experience of humanity is that no matter what happens to them, even great traumas, tragedies, and victimizations, what harms them more than the incident or event is how they conceive of it and how they respond. My concern is that culturally we have come into a place where we don’t believe this. We feel it is our right and it’s just, to respond to pain, with pain. And to say otherwise is actually offensive. Looking at the mental health stats these days, I don’t think this perspective is working. This is the conversation you’re about to hear with Marc Brackett. Marc previously authored the bestselling book, Permission To Feel and most recently, along with Pinterest co-founder Ben Silbermann, Marc and his team co-created the Apple award-winning app, HowWeFeel, that was designed to teach emotion skills and enhance well-being. Authentic Leadership w/ Kristen Hadeed | How To Lead & Connect As Your Authentic Self

Authentic Leadership w/ Kristen Hadeed | How To Lead & Connect As Your Authentic Self

The fact you are listening to this podcast tells me you are driven to influence others, and influence is leadership. So whether you want to positively influence your kids or friends or coworkers, or you want to lead a company or organization, you need some leadership skills. However, the term of leadership covers a lot of ground and has a lot of baggage that may not be relevant for you. Which is why I’m doing this series on Authentic Leadership and I’ve brought in Kristen Hadeed. Kristen Hadeed has a great story of unintentional leadership that now has her on stage around the world teaching other leaders what she calls, human leadership. Which I’d say is leading while being a good and serving human. Kristen was in college and started cleaning people’s homes to generate some income. She got more requests and ended up hiring people to help and from it and ultimately created a company that cleaned student apartments and dorms, staffed only by students. But she made so, so many mistakes that helped her learn how to really lead people by connecting to and caring about them. Kristen’s book is titled Permission To Screw Up: How I Learned to Lead by Doing (Almost) Everything Wrong. It’s a wonderful book, which is why Simon Sinek wrote the forward. In this show Kristen and I discuss what authentic leadership is and can be. And we get into talking about not only the value of trying and failing, but the necessity if you are doing anything worthwhile. Kristen is a bright light and we resonated so much we intend to do more work together. And a gift for you, Kristen has a renowned program called the Human Leadership Program. A ticket costs $299, but if you use this special link you get in free. Literally free - https://kristenhadeed.myflodesk.com/qjrsjl9vug. Charles Duhigg: How To Drive From Mere Communication To Actual Connection

Charles Duhigg: How To Drive From Mere Communication To Actual Connection

Here in America we are massively overfed, and often undernourished. Likewise we are in an age of dramatic overcommunication, and under-connection. And here lies the opportunity. This is the superpower. To evolve past mere communication and get to connection. This is where the magic happens. If you can connect, you can influence. And you’re about to learn that you in fact, don’t know how to really connect. Or at least, you can do it better and more consistently. My expert for the series is Charles Duhigg. I got to know Charles intimately on a beach in Florida, nearly a decade ago. He wasn’t there, as I was on a getaway with my wife and I was devouring his book, The Power of Habit. I have it right here, marked up and tattered. Still my favorite resource on habits. So when I got contacted by his agency about having him on the show, and that his focus this time was communication, I said schedule it. Immediately. And…he delivered. You’re about to hear how to do what few people do well, and you can make the change…immediately. And benefit…immediately. CHARLES DUHIGG is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and the author of The Power of Habit, which spent over three years on bestseller lists and has been translated into 40 languages, and Smarter Faster Better, also a bestseller. His newest book, Supercommunicators: How To Unlock The Secret Language of Connection, is available February, 2024. Charles writes for The New Yorker magazine and is a graduate of Yale University and the Harvard Business School. He has been a frequent contributor to CNBC, This American Life, NPR, PBS’s NewsHour and Frontline. The bio says you were also, for one terrifying day in 1999, a bike messenger in San Francisco. Transforming Conflict | The Big Idea & Action w/ Kevin

Transforming Conflict | The Big Idea & Action w/ Kevin

This is my Big Idea & Action episode where I pull out the key highlights from our series on transforming conflict. Our catalyst was William Ury, one of the world’s best-known experts on negotiation, and the co-author of Getting to Yes, the world’s all-time bestselling book on the topic with more than 15 million copies sold. He’s a co-founder of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation and his brand new book and our muse for part one in this series, is, POSSIBLE: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict. I also had a conversation in the previous episode with my co-host and brother, Jared Angaza who has served domestically and overseas as a conflict negotiator. It was in the conversation I had an epiphany, which I’m about to share in what turned out to be seven key highlights that stood out to me. Transforming Conflict w/ William Ury | How To Engage In & Rise Above Any Conflict

Transforming Conflict w/ William Ury | How To Engage In & Rise Above Any Conflict

We begin a series on conflict, or more specifically, the possibilities within or around conflict. We seem to be a world more at conflict than ever. We can ask why, but where it starts is with us and chances are as you are listening right now you have a list of people in your lives who you are struggling with or distanced from, because of conflict. So how can you…how can I…better steward conflict in our lives, and from there, in the worlds around us? My guest and expert on the topic is William Ury. William is one of the world’s best-known experts on negotiation, and the co-author of Getting to Yes, the world’s all-time bestselling book on the topic with more than 15 million copies sold. He’s a co-founder of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation and has devoted his life to helping people, organizations, and nations transform conflicts around the world, having served as a negotiator in many of the toughest disputes of our times and consulted with the White House, the State Department, and the Pentagon. He has served as a negotiation adviser and mediator in conflicts ranging from Kentucky wildcat coal mine strikes to family feuds, from US partisan battles to wars in the Middle East, Colombia, Korea, and Ukraine. My focus in this series is primarily on the greatest battle front, which is the worlds we live in, in our homes and our work. My muse is William’s brand new book, POSSIBLE: How We Survive (and Thrive) in an Age of Conflict. What Drives Your Health | How To Keep Choice Pollution From Giving You Anxiety

What Drives Your Health | How To Keep Choice Pollution From Giving You Anxiety

This is a What Drives Your Health episode and we look at how choice pollution is feeding into your anxiety. This is not what we want fueling our drive. When you are faced with too many choices, you are inclined to do…nothing. Or if you’re like me you just make a rash decision just so you can move on. Taking time to figure out the best decision can cause stress and from this we are generally suffering from decision fatigue. Now think about the reality of life today that always has an infinite amount of choices for anything at any given moment. It produces a culture of anxiety. We’re calling it “choice pollution” and in this episode Dr Randy James of True Life Medicine and I talk about the problem, the solution and the anti anxiety drugs being prescribed for it.
