1226: James Kimmel, Jr. | No Even Scores in the Science of Revenge

Your brain on revenge looks like your brain on drugs. Here, Dr. James Kimmel, Jr. explores the neuroscience of vengeance and the power of forgiveness.

Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1226

What We Discuss with James Kimmel, Jr.:

  • Revenge activates the same brain circuitry as drug addiction. When we experience grievances, our brain's pain centers light up, triggering cravings for revenge that activate the nucleus accumbens and dorsal striatum — the same pleasure and addiction pathways used by cocaine, gambling, and alcohol. This explains why revenge feels temporarily euphoric but leaves us wanting more.
  • Most violence stems from perceived victimization, not inherent evil. Nearly all forms of human violence — from playground bullying to terrorism and genocide — originate from revenge-seeking behavior. The perpetrator almost always views themselves as a victim first, making revenge the root cause of mass shootings, intimate partner violence, gang conflicts, and even war.
  • Imagined grievances trigger real revenge desires with real-world consequences. It doesn't matter whether victimization is real or manufactured — if it feels real in your head, it produces genuine revenge cravings. This explains how leaders like Hitler used the "stab in the back" myth to mobilize a nation, and why mass shooters nurse perceived slights that no one else remembers.
  • Revenge addiction destroys relationships and keeps you trapped in the past. Unlike self-defense (which protects your future), revenge always looks backward, creating a preoccupation with past wrongs. It damages every relationship, increases anger and anxiety, and paradoxically makes you feel worse after the initial dopamine hit fades — all while fearing retaliation.
  • Forgiveness is the neurological cure — and you can learn it. Science now shows we're hardwired for forgiveness as much as revenge. Forgiveness actually stops pain rather than just covering it up, shuts down revenge cravings, and reactivates your prefrontal cortex. Dr. Kimmel's "Nonjustice System" — a role-play trial method tested at Yale — gives you a practical way to be heard, hold someone accountable in your mind, and ultimately release yourself from past wounds. More tools and insights coming in part two later this week.
  • And much more...

246: Wendy Behary | Disarming the Narcissist

Wendy Behary (@donsanddivas) has been training professionals and supervising psychotherapists for more than 20 years, and is the author of Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed. What We Discuss with Wendy Behary: What's the difference between someone who comes off as somewhat self-absorbed and a full-blown, clinical narcissist? Is clinical narcissism actually on the rise in the US? If so, what’s causing it? Does narcissism statistically affect men more than women, or is there just a difference in how they tend to express it? When a little bit of narcissism can be a big advantage.  How to tell early on if you’re dealing with a bona fide narcissist, what you can do to remain your best self in their presence, and how you might possibly help them become their better selves. 245: Is Your Boyfriend Cheating on You with Porn? | Feedback Friday

245: Is Your Boyfriend Cheating on You with Porn? | Feedback Friday

When your significant other agreed to stop watching porn early in your relationship, you were relieved. But now that you've been dating for a few years and everything's otherwise great, you can't shake the feeling that they haven't quite given up porn and it feels like a betrayal. Is porn cheating? On this Feedback Friday, we do our best to get some perspective on this and much more! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Jason DeFillippo (@jpdef) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: https://jordanharbinger.com/245. On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Due to your own complicated history, your significant other's possible consumption of porn feels like betrayal. Is there a way to understand it from a different perspective? You spent six years training for your dream job only to be disqualified on a technicality. How can you motivate yourself to endure a similar time sink for another career when you know you're not getting any younger? As a business owner, how do you deal with the deadbeats who take advantage of your good nature and don't respect what you do enough to give you fair value for your services? How do people transition from the period of time they need to get experience in their field to the time they get paid for making use of that experience? Your significant other wants you to list the names of the people you've dated and slept with in the past, and then delete them all from your social media. Is this at all reasonable? You assumed you were having an email conversation regarding a business proposition with a man you know named Sam, but it turns out it's been with a woman named Sam whom you don't remember meeting. Now what? You're normally a great conversationalist, but when it comes to interacting with a superior, you find yourself worrying too much about accidentally saying the wrong thing and the conversation ends up stagnating. How might you overcome this? Life Pro Tip: Looking to cut the cord but dreading the inevitable call to the cable company where they badger you into not leaving? Tell them you're moving out of state where they don't offer services. Your cancellation call will take a fraction of the time. 240: Richard Clarke | Defending Ourselves in the Age of Cyber Threats

Richard Clarke (@richardclarke) served for 30 years in national security policy roles in the US government and worked directly for three presidents. He is the host of the Future State Podcast and co-author of The Fifth Domain: Defending Our Country, Our Companies, and Ourselves in the Age of Cyber Threats. What We Discuss with Richard Clarke: How we're in constant low-grade cyber conflict with Russia, China, Iran, and other adversarial nation states -- and the forms this can take. Cyber crime was a $600 billion industry (one percent of global GDP) in 2018, much of it perpetrated by rogue nations like North Korea. How cyberattacks can be (and have been) used to wreak physical damage on infrastructure, and why we should take them as seriously as traditional weaponry. Is it the government's job to protect private companies against cyberattacks from foreign powers, or is it up to private companies to be responsible for their own safety? Why there's a crisis-level shortage of cybersecurity expertise coming out of our country's most serious tech schools, and where it's being found instead. And much more...
