Accident or Murder? Why do missing men keep turning up in rivers?

Accident or Murder? Why do missing men keep turning up in rivers?

Almost daily we hear of a case of a different missing man that vanishes after a night out with friends. It happens everywhere - Boston, Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota. Even in England. Big cities and small towns. The stories of these men play out in the same way. Family and friends conduct desperate searches and make frenzied social media posts in an attempt to find him before time runs out. And then the worst happens, a body is pulled from a lake or river, usually not far from where the man was last seen. The search is over.

Can all of these cases really be attributed to accidents? Why do these cases seem to happen in clustered locations?

In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we look at the cases of five men who were missing and later recovered in water. We also discuss one current case where the man is still missing and a river is currently being searched:

- Christopher Jenkins went missing from Minneapolis in 2002 on Halloween night. His body was found in a river four months later. Police originally classified his death as an accident and had to apologize to Chris' family when they determined it was actually likely a homicide.

- Zachary Marr went missing from a bar in Boston on February 13, 2016. He had gone outside for a cigarette and messaged his friends that he wanted to leave. In the matter of minutes while they were getting their coats, Zachary vanished into the night. His body was found in a river one month after he disappeared and his death is thought to be accidental.

- Dakota James was last seen alive on January 25, 2017 in Pittsburgh. He was walking home after a night out with friends. His body was pulled from a river 40 days later. Dakota's family believe he had been drugged on the night he disappeared and that the condition of his body was too 'pristine' to have been in the water for so long. A smiley face was found spray painted on an underpass near where Dakota's body was found.

- Jelani Day went missing in August and his body was pulled from a river in September. Pathologist Dr Jame Bryant said within his 50 years of experience he had never examined a body as destroyed as the 25-year-old.

- Dakota Bingham went missing from a bar in Nashville on October 10, 2021. He called a Lyft to get home but never made the ride. There is apparently CCTV of Dakota falling into the Cumberland River and struggling to swim. His body was recovered just days after he disappeared.

- Brendan Santo was visiting friends at Michigan State University on October 29. He left to walk to another area and has not been seen since. As of November 24, 2021, Brendan is still missing. The Red Cedar River has been searched many times for him and police are hopeful of a breakthrough now that the water level is receding. The FBI are also involved in the search for Brendan.

The Abduction & Murder of Daniel Morcombe

The Abduction & Murder of Daniel Morcombe

Timestamps (2:00) - Tracey Nix Updates (10:36) - Daniel Morcombe In December 2003, Australian teen Daniel Morcombe (13) had saved up some money and decided to take the bus to a shopping center to buy Christmas gifts for his family. Daniel walked to a nearby bus stop.  He attempted to flag down a bus, but the driver was unable to stop due to mechanical issues with the vehicle.  A second bus followed behind very shortly.  Daniel was no longer at the bus stop and was never seen alive again. The investigation into Daniel’s disappearance was one of the largest ever seen in Australia.  At one stage, there was a reward of $1m offered in the case. In 2011, a sex offender named Brett Peter Cowan was arrested and charged with Daniel’s murder.  Cowan had offered Daniel a lift to the shopping centre after the bus failed to stop.   Cowan murdered Daniel within an hour of his abduction.  In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the abduction and murder of Daniel Morcombe. Accident or Murder? | Grandmother Tracey Nix

Accident or Murder? | Grandmother Tracey Nix

Skip the intro chat: (7:36) Tracey Nix fell asleep while she was meant to be caring for her grandson Ezra, who was 16 months old.  Ezra got out of the home and went to a pond on the family property.  He ended up drowning and passing away. An investigation was conducted and no charges were laid against Tracey. In November 2022, Tracey was caring for another grandchild, Uriel, who was 7 months old.  Tracey took the baby to a restaurant for lunch and then drove her home.  Instead of taking the baby into the home, Tracey left her in the vehicle and went inside to play the piano.   She insists that she ‘just forgot’ that the baby was in the vehicle.  Uriel would pass away from hyperthermia after being left in the car in 90 degree temperatures. Tracey was recently taken to trial for Uriel’s death.   Ezra’s death was not allowed to be discussed during proceedings.  Tracey has been found not guilty of the manslaughter of Uriel but has been convicted on a lesser charge. Moms Who Murder | Jessica Chandler & Lacey Spears

Moms Who Murder | Jessica Chandler & Lacey Spears

Timestamp to skip the intro - (7:38) In October 2024, a 911 call was placed from the home of Tennessee woman Jessica Chandler. When authorities arrived, they found her two children, aged 4 and 1, unresponsive. Both children were declared dead at the scene. When authorities first investigated, it was determined that Jessica had likely poisoned her children before making a superficial attempt to take her own life. Authorities initially believed this as empty medication bottles were found at the scene. This case is unfolding in the courts at the moment and we have since learned that Jessica actually smothered her children with a Lilo and Stitch blanket. Lacey Spears lived an unusual and tumultuous life. Growing up, she told stories about abuse, eating disorders and abortion. None of which have been proven to be true. Lacey gave birth to a son, Garnett, in 2008. She immediately made up lies about Garnett’s father and started documenting her sons ‘medical issues’ online. Lacey insisted that Garnett have a feeding tube placed because he was unable to tolerate standard feeding. Nurses were skeptical as they were able to feed the baby without any issues. When Garnett was five, he ended up being airlifted to hospital. His sodium levels were so high that a doctor confronted his mother about the situation. Garnett passed away days later and a police investigation began. Lacey was convicted of murdering her son by injecting him with ultra levels of sodium. Authorities believe she suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Poisoning murders are a very rare occurrence. This method accounts for just under one-half of one percent of murders. They Almost Got Away With It (Thanks to the Alligators) | The Murder of Mike Williams

They Almost Got Away With It (Thanks to the Alligators) | The Murder of Mike Williams

Timestamps: (3:33) - Updates (Liam Payne arrests, Gypsy Rose had a baby) (14:09) - The Murder of Mike Williams In 2000, Florida man Mike Williams seemed to have it all.  He was married to his high school sweetheart, Denise, and they had a beautiful daughter together.  Mike was successful in his career and enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting. One early morning in December 2000, Mike allegedly took his boat and went hunting on Lake Seminole.  Denise raised the alarm when he did not return by noon.  The search for Mike began, and ran for months.  One theory was that Mike had been injured in a boating accident, fallen overboard and drowned.  It was expected that his remains would eventually surface in the lake.  They didn’t. Just months after he disappeared, Denise petitioned to have Mike declared dead so that she could claim almost $2m in life insurance.   A judge agreed, despite the usual waiting period in Florida for someone to be declared dead being five years.   Five years after Mike vanished, Denise married his best friend (and life insurance salesman) Brian Winchester.  Their marriage was tumultuous and would eventually end in divorce.  After their marriage fell apart, the truth came out.  Brian and Denise had been having an affair and they worked together to kill Mike.  His remains were found in 2017. Always The Husband (Texas Edition) | The Murders of Suzanne Simpson & Christa Gilley

Always The Husband (Texas Edition) | The Murders of Suzanne Simpson & Christa Gilley

Timestamp to skip the intro chat - (6:51) According to the Bureau of Justice, the percentage of women murdered by an intimate partner is 5 times higher than it is for men.  Of the estimated 4,970 female homicide victims in 2021, 34% were killed by an intimate partner. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two separate cases where women have allegedly been murdered by their husbands.   Texas realtor and mother-of-four, Suzanne Simpson was last seen arguing with her husband Brad on the night of October 6, 2024.  A neighbor reported hearing screams following the fight.  Hours later, Brad purchased two bags of cement, a construction bucket with a lid, 32 trash bags and bleach.   Police believe he killed Suzanne and dismembered and disposed of her body.  Brad has been arrested and charged with murder, unlawful restraint, assault, tampering with evidence and possession of a prohibited weapon.  Suzanne remains missing. On October 7, 2024, Lee Gilley called 911 and said his pregnant wife Christa intentionally overdosed in an attempt to kill herself. Christa was taken to the hospital where she passed away.  Doctors discovered that Christa’s injuries were not consistent with Lee’s story.  An investigation determined that Christa had been strangled to death. Lee was arrested and charged with capital murder.  In the weeks leading up to her death, Lee was engaging with online content about traditional gender roles and the belief that women should stay at home instead of having their own careers.
