Rudy Farias | Alive after "vanishing" for 8 years
Rudy Farias was 17 when he vanished in Houston in 2015. He was last seen walking his two dogs – the animals returned home and he did not. Over the years, Rudy’s family gave multiple media interviews and conducted fundraising in an effort to find him. Rudy’s mother Janie even flew to California to visit a John Doe in a hospital at one point, who authorities thought may have been Rudy. When she found the male was not her son, she collapsed and had to be hospitalized herself. On June 29, 2023, a man resembling Rudy was found injured and unable to communicate on the steps of a Houston church. Somehow, Rudy’s family were notified and were on the scene before law enforcement. They made many social media posts announcing that their beloved son had been found alive after eight years! What a miracle! Except their story quickly unravelled. It turns out that Rudy actually returned two days after he went missing in 2015 and he had been home this entire time. There are now allegations of abuse and sexual assault against Rudy’s mother, Janie. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the wild case of ‘missing man’ Rudy Farias. We also discuss a quick overview of the recent Island Serial Killer updates. Listen Now: Suspect "Five Shots in the Dark"
Leon Benson spent more than half of his life, a total of 24 years, in an Indiana state prison for a murder he didn't commit. Despite the lack of physical evidence and a questionable eyewitness identification, he was convicted. But new realities start to come to light when attorney Lara Bazelon takes up his case and is determined to secure Benson's release. Season three of Suspect, co-produced by Campside Media and Wondery, delves into the flaws in the criminal justice system that led to Benson's wrongful conviction for the 1998 shooting of Kasey Schoen in Indianapolis. The investigation aims to uncover the truth about who really committed the crime and why the eyewitness testimony that led to Benson's conviction was so shaky. Host Matthew Shaer joins co-producer and writer Bazelon to take a deep dive into the nature of memory and how it can be fallible and result in an innocent man's life being wasted, while the real perpetrator remains unpunished. As the investigation unfolds, will Bazelon and her team gather enough evidence to free Benson? And what will happen to Schoen’s real killer?
