What's the Deal With DNA? Using DNA to Trace Your Family History | AF-21

DNA testing can help you find relatives, explore your family tree, and investigate gaps in the paper trail. This Ancestral Findings episode introduces Y-DNA, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and autosomal DNA, and explains how DNA matches can support traditional genealogy research.

A note about this 2015 recording: Eye color involves multiple genes and does not follow the simple 50/50 example used in the episode. Autosomal DNA is DNA on the numbered, non-sex chromosomes; it is not synonymous with "junk DNA." Use DNA matches alongside records to evaluate possible relationships.

Why Do Some Ancestors Feel Closer Than Others? | AF-1321

A photograph can change things quickly. Until then, I may know a person only through census entries, deeds, handwritten records, or a name on a family tree. Then I see a face. I notice the eyes, the c...
