A Friend, A Lover, A Killer: The Murder of Betty Gore (part 1 of 3)

The peaceful town of Wylie, Texas, is the kind of place where neighbors are friends, church is the center of social life, and nothing truly bad ever happens—until it does.

Betty Gore, a schoolteacher and mother of two, is settling into life with a newborn, but something feels off. Her husband, Allan, is traveling for work more often, leaving her alone with the long, exhausting days of motherhood. The loneliness weighs on her. Friends say Betty has always been sensitive—prone to self-doubt, easily hurt by slights both real and imagined—but lately, something deeper seems to be gnawing at her.

Among the friends in her circle is Candy Montgomery—a warm, outgoing woman known for organizing church events, lending a helping hand, and always knowing what to say to make people feel comfortable. But behind closed doors, Candy feels something is missing. Her days are predictable, her marriage steady but uninspiring. She craves something new, something thrilling.

As church gatherings and community events bring Candy and Allan together more often, a quiet shift begins. A glance held just a second too long. A conversation that feels a little too intimate. A shared dissatisfaction neither of them speaks about—but both understand.

By the end of this chapter, something is simmering just beneath the surface. Neither Betty nor Candy realizes it yet, but their worlds are already on a collision course.
