Hops (Humulus lupulus)

Upon the trellis, reaching for the light,

A verdant climber, pleasing to the sight.

The Humulus lupulus, the hops so fine,

Whose fragrant cones hold medicine divine.

Though known for brewing, lending beer its zest,

Its gentle powers put the mind at rest.

When anxious thoughts like buzzing insects stray,

And chase the calm of peaceful sleep away,

A bitter herb, a sedative so mild,

To soothe the worries of the weary child.

For restlessness that keeps the body tense,

It offers solace, a sweet recompense.

A cup of tea, with cones infused and steeped,

Where silent slumber can at last be reaped.

The phytoestrogens, a helpful boon,

For women facing nature’s change too soon.

With menopausal heat and night sweats dire,

It helps to quell that internal fire.

It works in balance, subtle and profound,

Where gentle comfort can at last be found.

Beyond the nerves, its gifts are many more,

A bitter tonic, opened is the door

To better health within the digestive track,

It sends the bloat and sluggish feelings back.

It stimulates the flow of gastric juice,

And puts the system to a proper use.

An anti-inflammatory force it brings,

To soothe the ache that chronic pressure wrings.

With humulone and lupulone at play,

It drives the inflammation far away.

And ancient wisdom whispers of its use,

As antiseptic, guarding from abuse

Of tiny microbes, helping wounds to heal,

A versatile prescription, strong and real.

So raise a glass, or steep a quiet brew,

To hops' soft magic, ever strong and true.

A velvet curtain drawn across the night,

Restoring balance, peace, and inner light.

A treasure plucked from nature’s fertile hand,

The bitter healer, recognized and grand.
