The Kardashian Kult Pt. 2

The Kardashian Kult Pt. 2

Hey, Besties! Today on Almost Adulting, we welcome back MJ Corey (@kardashian_kolloquium) to continue their conversation about the Kardashian family and how they continue to stay relevant to this day. Violet and MJ go straight into discussing how Kylie has emerged from her sisters' shadows and built an empire for herself. The pair also discuss the Kardashian's rebranding strategy centered around how they look and the power they have as a family rooting on their differing personalities and businesses they built from it, and the simplistic language the family uses that's easy to digest and reproduce. They also exchange ideas on the effect of the hate culture and why people ended up copying the people they tend to hate and how one can become either the victim, the hero, or the villain in someone else's narrative. The Kardashian Kult

The Kardashian Kult

For the third week of the cult month, we’re going to do things differently. In a special 2 part episode, this week we will be looking deeper into the Kardashian conglomerate with a different lens and focusing on how their success is anchored on controlling their narrative, building an ever-evolving empire, and remaining uniquely influential. Today on Almost Adulting we welcome MJ Corey! MJ, better known as kardashian_kolloquium on TikTok, is a writer and psychotherapist from Brooklyn. She gained starpower on social media by applying media theory and postmodern philosophy to the entire Kardashian family, their reality show, and their overall impact on society through critical thinking. Violet and MJ begin the conversation by defining what postmodernism is and how it equates to celebrities becoming commodities as opposed to civilians. They then move to discussing how the Kardashians are at the top of a modern cult wherein their influence gives them the control over the media and set trends that are both impactful and life changing - far beyond Instagram and fashion. The two also exchange thoughts on the current state and definition of “celebrity”, how our subconscious has been so deeply penetrated by the media, and this culture of hate that is both beneficial and disadvantageous to any celebrity and/or influencer. Cult Survivors: NXIVM ft. Sarah Edmondson and Nippy

Continuing with cult month, today we are diving into the world of NXIVM where we welcome two survivors turned whistleblowers of a very famous cult masked as an MLM company. NXIVM became widely known during their high profile RICO case involving celebrities, billionaire heiresses, and the FBI. This week on Almost Adulting, Violet speaks with Sarah Edmondson and Anthony “Nippy” Ames, hosts of A Little Bit Culty podcast and former members of NXIVM. Founded by Keith Raniere, NXIVM posed themselves as a self-improvement group, only to later be exposed as a “sex cult” by extorting, sex trafficking, and implementing force labor upon its members. Sarah and Nippy open up about the details of how they were lured into NXIVM, what it was like on the inside, and the horrifying secrets they discovered after Sarah was forcibly branded. Sarah and Nippy tell the story of how they were integral to the downfall of NXIVM and the arrest of its leaders. The couple is also recently featured in HBO’s The Vow, a documentary diving into the world of NXIVM, and Sarah is also the author of Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, the Cult That Bound My Life.TW: sexual abuseCOME TO MY SHOW AT THE HOLLYWOOD IMPROV ON OCT. 24! Can A Player Change? w/ Neil Strauss

Can A Player Change? w/ Neil Strauss

Besties, throughout September we covered all things personal growth and really checked in with each other. So the best way to end this month is by talking to Neil Strauss, a ten-time New York Times best-selling author. His books, The Game and Rules Of The Game, for which he went undercover in a secret society of pickup artists for two years, made him an international celebrity and an accidental hero to men around the world. Though this sounds a little questionable, the topic here is GROWTH, which is exactly what’s displayed here today. This week on Almost Adulting, Violet and Neil begin the conversation by diving right into the controversy of his best selling book, The Game. Violet asks Neil to dive deep to help people understand who he was at that time and unpack the chokehold the book had on society. Of course, this isn't an Almost Adulting episode if the two didn’t talk about relationships. Neil explains why divorce was one of the best things him and his ex-wife could have ever done, leading them to having an amazing relationship today. They also discuss the common mistakes that often lead to breakups, how to move on from said breakups, and why a cheater will remain a cheater unless they mention these specific words…tune in Besties!GET TIX TO MY SHOW AT THE HOLLYWOOD IMPROV ON OCT. 24! - https://improv.com/comic/violet+benson/THIS WEEK’S PODCAST IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY:Shopify: Sign up for a free trial at shopify.com/adulting to start selling online today!Advertise with Almost Adulting at Gumball.fm What to Listen For:00:00 Introduction02:40 This is how lonely I’ve gotten04:41 See you guys again at Hollywood Improv!08:25 I get to experience being 15 years old again11:39 The Game17:32 What’s the dirtiest advice?19:20 Non-violent communication22:37 If you’re both not ready, it’s not going to happen24:22 Getting drawn to people familiar to you27:32 Work on yourself and improve your emotional intelligence28:42 Can a player change their ways?31:37 Both partner have to make the relationship work34:12 A relationships isn’t a failure if it ends36:18 How to create a happy relationship?37:32 How do you move on from a relationship that didn’t work?39:20 When you see your partner like a parent43:28 How do you overcome being the villain?45:35 The cheating ex46:54 Do you believe cheaters can change?Connect with Neil:WebsiteFacebookTwitterYouTubeInstagramBooksTo Live and Die in LA PodcastGet more content on:@almostadulting on Instagram@violetbenson on Instagram@daddyissues_ on InstagramYouTubeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Lies Our Brain Tells Us w/ Amy Morin

Lies Our Brain Tells Us w/ Amy Morin

When going through a tough time the most annoying thing in the world is everyone seems to have all the advice on what you “should” do, right? Well you’re not alone, but the reality is that sometimes these things recommended to us are actually things we should be doing - but before we can even fathom doing them, we have to drop our bad habits. Besties, welcome Amy Morin to Almost Adulting! Amy is a licensed clinical social worker, college psychology instructor and psychotherapist, and responsible for one of the most popular Ted Talks of all time. Today Violet and Amy start the conversation by unpacking the often stressful topic of habits - how we form them, stick to them, and what we can do when we accidentally break our positive habits. The duo dives into what our bad habits say about us, and the importance of breaking them in order to create good ones. Through this, Amy teaches that mental strength and mental health are actually two entirely different things, and how the lies that our brain tells us affect us on a much deeper level than we realize. Finally, the ladies discuss a topic that life never prepares us for: grief. Though grief is something no one can avoid, it’s never something anyone is ready for. Through Amy telling her story she learned coping mechanisms that truly changed her life, and that EVERYTHING always relates back to one thing…habits. Whether it be maintaining good ones, or breaking bad ones, habits can be HARD, so give each other grace and tune in to discover the tools you didn’t know you needed.
